JM VKJ C K WAWW ted States Patent ()fitice Fatented Oct. 7, 1958 This invention relates to pressing combs of the type commonly employed by beauticians for womens hair.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a pressing comb for beauticians wherein the teeth of the comb are interchangeable for coarse, medium or fine hair, as may be desired.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a pressing comb for beauticians of the above type wherein the comb member is insertable and removable by an injection action similar to that employed in an injector razor.
Other objects of the, invention are to provide a pressing comb bearing the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is inexpensive to manufacture and efficient in use.
For other objects and a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a preferred embodiment of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the embodiment shown in Figure 1.

Referring now more in detail to the drawing, 10 represents a semi-cylindrical head member integrally formed at one end at right angles thereto with a depending triangular shaped flange 11, the undersurface of the flat portion of the head 10 being provided with a substan-. tially T-shaped groove 12 (Fig. 10).
The end of the head 10 adjacent the flange 11 is integrally formed with an elongated sleeve 13 having a relatively narrow cylindrical bore 14 adjacent the flange 11 and which connects with the relatively wide smooth bore 15 extending from the shoulder 16 (Fig. 2), the end of the sleeve 13 remote from the flange 11 being externally threaded, as at 17.
A spacer sleeve 18 is positioned on the sleeve 13 adjacent flange 11 and abuts the reduced end 19 of a wooden handle 20 having a central bore 21 which receives therethrough the sleeve 13, the end of the handle 20 remote from the flange 11 having an enlarged bore 22 forming with bore 21 a shoulder 23.
The handle 20 and sleeve 18 are secured on sleeve 13 by means of the lock nut 24 which is screwed onto the externally threaded end 17 of sleeve 13 into abutment with the shoulder 23, as will be obvious.
A cylindrical plug 25 is provided and is adapted to fit into the bore 22 and is integrally formed with an en larged knob'26 which abuts the end of the handle 20. As shown in Figs. 6 and 7, an elongated sleeve 27 2 adapted to be slidably received within the sleeve 13 is fixedly mounted at one end within a bore 28 (Fig. 2) provided in plug 25, the inner end of the sleeve 27 abutting the shoulder 16 when the plug 25 is in position'within bore 22. The sleeve 27 is provided with an elongated slot 29 which terminates at its inner end in a laterally enlarged slot 30, the slot 29 near the other end thereof being provided with a second laterally enlarged slot 31.
An elongated rod 32 is telescopically received within -sleeve 27 and is integrally formed at its inner end with.
an enlarged cylindrical head 33. The rod 32 is provided with an elongated slot 34 therethrough, the rod 32 near the outer end of the slot 34 being also provided with a pin 35 adapted to ride the slot 29 of sleeve 27 and upon rotational movement of the sleeve to be locked in either I v 1 ;.The inner end of the T-shap'ed portion 38 is provided with a semi-cylindrical reduced bore 39 which connects at the inner end thereof with an enlarged semi-cylindrical groove 40, the rod 32 passing through the groove 39 with the head 33 thereof being received within groove 40. The
frontmost of the teeth 37 is integrally formed at its upper end with a semi-circular flange 41 which is adapted to abut the front end of the head 10 when the comb is in position therebelow, as shown in Fig. 2. The comb member, 37, rod 32 and sleeve 27 will be formed of metal, while the handle 20 Will be formed of wood. The plug 25 and knob 26 thereof will preferably be formed of Wood or plastic.
In operation, the comb member 37 is first heated, such as by dipping in hot water and then used on the hair in a manner well known to those skilled in the art. This operation will be effected when the parts are in the assembled relationship of Fig. 2. In order to eject the comb 37 and replace the same by a different comb, not shown, for coarse, medium or fine hair and having the teeth correspondingly spaced, it is only necessary to rotate sleeve 27 about the longitudinal axis thereof by means of the knob 26 so that the pin 35 is disengaged from slot 31 and is brought into longitudinal alignment with slot 29. The sleeve 27 may then be drawn outwardly from handle 20 (Fig. 5) by means of the knob 26 until the pin 35 reaches the slot 30, after which a rotation of knob 26 will lock the pin 35 in slot 30, as shown in Fig. 6. The knob 26 is then pushed toward the wooden handle 20 to cause the rod 32 to move forwardly through the head 10 carrying therealong the comb 37. When the T-shaped ridge of the comb 37 has passed completely under and away from the head 10, the comb may be then removed from the rod 32 by dropping the same downwardly, disengaging the enlargement 33 from groove 40, as will be obvious. The comb may then be readily replaced by a different comb member having the teeth thereof spaced for coarse, medium or fine hair and upon reversing the above operations brought into locked position below the head 10. This would be effected by first drawing the knob 26 away from the. wooden handle 20,- to retract the rod 32 and comb 37 into the position of 1 Fig. 2. The sleeve 27' would then be rotated by means of knob 26 and then returned to the, handle 20' to, bring the pin 35 back into theslot 31', upon lateral rotation of sleeve 27, the pin being locked therein.
It'should now be apparent that there has been provided a pressing comb wherein the comb member is interchangeable for coarse, medium or fine hair and is, in.- serted' and ejected in the same manner as an injector razor.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understoodthat such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
Referring now particularly to l'Eig. 11, there is shown a modified form of the present invention wherein the semicylindrical head li a is now provided with atdovetailshaped groove 12:: into which is received the dovetailshaped ridge 38a integrally formed at the upper end of the comb member 37a. In other respects the form of the invention shown in Fig. 11 is the same as that shown in Figs. 1 through 10.
Having thus set forth and disclosed the nature of my invention, what is claimed is:
1. An injector pressing comb comprising a head member carrying a depending flange, a separable comb mem: ber slidably mounted below said head member in. abutment with said depending flange, handle means connected to said head member, and means for ejecting and inserting said comb member, said head member comprising: an elongated member having a flat undersurface and having a groove on the undersurface thereof, said comb member at the upper end thereof fixedly carrying a ridge adapted to be slidably received within said groove,v said handle means comprising an elongated sleeve connected to the end of said head member adjacent said depending flange, a spacer sleeve surrounding said first sleeve in abutment with said flange, and an enlarged handle on said first sleeve in abutment with said spacer sleeve, said handle at the end thereof remote from said head having an enlarged bore forming a first shoulder, the end of said first sleeve within said enlarged bore being externally threaded and lock nut means screwed onto said externally threaded end in abutment with said first shoulder.
2. An injector pressing comb according to claim 1, said ejector means comprising a cylindrical plug slidably received Within said enlarged bore of said handle and terminating at its outer end in an enlarged knob adapted to abut the end of said handle, a second sleeve fixedly connected at its outer end to said plug, said first sleeve having a first reduced bore adjacent said depending flange and a second enlarged bore extending rearwardly from said reduced bore, said second sleeve being slidably received within said enlarged bore, an elongated rod telescopically received within said second sleeve and extending through said reduced bore of said first sleeve, means for locking said rod at the forward end of said second sleeve, means for locking said rod at the rear end of said 1 second sleeve said comb member having a first groove receiving said rod therethrough and an enlarged groove receiving therewithin in locking engagement an enlargement carried on the inner end. of said rod.
3. An injector pressing comb according to claim 2, said means for locking said rod at the forward end of said second sleeve comprising said second sleeve having an elongated slot therethrough and a laterally enlarged slot at the forward end of said elongated slot adapted to receive a pin carried near the rear end of said rod therewithin.
4. An injector pressing comb according to claim 3, said means for locking said rod at the rear end of said second sleeve comprising a second laterally enlarged slot formed in said elongated slot near the outer end of said rod inwardly of said pin.
5. An injector pressing comb according to claim 4,, including a pin passing through said first sleeve within said elongated slot carried by said rod whereby to prevent,
rotational movement of the latter.
6. An injector pressing comb according to claim 5, said, head depending flange being substantially triangular, said head being substantially semi-cylindrical, said comb mem; ber comprising a plurality of longitudinally spaced, sub,- stantially triangular teeth.
7. An injector pressing comb according to claim 6,, the
outermost of said triangular teeth being integrally formed at its upper end with a semi-cylindrical flange adapted, to. abut the outer end of said head.
8. An injector pressing comb as set forth in claim 1,
