SAMUEL S. SARGEANT, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
HARNESS-BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 285,434, dated September 25, 1883. Application filed August 10, 1883. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL S. SARGEANT, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improved Harness-Buckle; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification- Figure 1 being a top view of my improved buckle formed with the holdback-loop on the frame; Fig. 2, an under side view of the buckle formed as in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a central longitudinal section of the buckle, including portions of the tug and trace; Figs. 4, 5, and 6, side views, respectively, of the frame, tongue-plate, and bail, separately; Fig. 7, a top view of the buckle formed with the holdback-loop on the sliding tongue.
Like letters designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention consists in a peculiar construction of the frame and tongue-plate and the combination thereof, and with a bail, all substantially as hereinafter specified.
In the drawings, A represents the frame of the buckle; B, the tongue-plate; O, the bail; D, one of the tugs of a harness, and E one of the traces thereof.
The frame may have the usual side loops, a a, and a holdbackloop, b,- but the said holdback-loop may be on the tongue-plate B, as shown in Fig. 7, the loop being shown as identical with the rear cross-bar of the tongueplate, though it may be an additional loop.
The frame A has a cross-bar, c, which is or may be at the rear end of the buckle, and from this cross-bar an arm, d, extends forward to within a short distance from the front bar, f, of the frame, being situated midway between the sides of the frame, with spaces between and the said sides. In the forward end of th arm there is preferably a notch, 9, into whir the tongue of the tongue-plate enters, and held therein to resist the strain on the era when the animal or team is pulling.
The tongue-plate B has a tongue, h, on i under side, near its front end, to enter the hol of the trace. Back of this part the side bar i i, extend backward and inward, and term nate with a cross-bar, k, connecting the twi These bars embrace the crossarm d of the fran A,the cross-bar it going under the frame, whii the tongue-plate goes over the frame, as shown The bars form a space wide enough to enabl the tongue of the tongue-plate to be withdraw from the trace, when the forward part of th tongue-plate is raised and the whole tilted t a position nearly at right angles to the trace thereby rendering it very easy to buckle an unbuckle the trace. The forward end of th tongue-plate is curved or turned upward, 2 shown at m, to keep the upper end of bail therein. There is no peculiarity in the cor struction of the bail O itself.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is The combination of the buckle-frame A, pro vided with an interior proj ecting arm, (Z, on cross-bar, c, a tongue-plate, B, with its rea crossbar, 7.", passed beneath the said arm, anr its forward bar. provided with an inwardly projecting tongue, it, above the same arm, am a bail, O, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed mynann in presence of two witnesses.
S. S. SARGEANT.
