Application January 7, 1957, Serial No. 632,706 1 4 Claims. (Cl. 24011.2)
This invention relates to a lamp and more particularly to a portable lamp capable of being used .properly and effectively as a floor lamp, table lamp, television lamp, reading lamp or other categories with equal facility.
An object of the present invention is to provide a practical lamp which is truly a multipurpose lamp in that it is capable of functioning equally well in many environments and for many purposes. In articles of this nature it is important from a commercial practicability and success standpoint to have an attractive product which is not only attractive but also functional.
Therefore, it is a further object of the present invention to provide a functional, practical lamp which is unique in its appearance and in its construction, the lamp being inexpensive to construct having little more than what would be expected in a common lamp shade.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lamp with a light reflector that is capable of being adjusted to selected positions whereby the light is contained within the lamp or is reflected for reading or for some other particular purpose.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lamp constructed in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is a perspective view similar to Figure 1 but showing the light reflector which serves as a closure when it is not used in the position shown in Figure 2;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the frame of the lamp of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 44 of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a fragmentary elevational view showing the attachment of the lamp socket to the frame;
Figure 6 is a fragmentary perspective view showing the handle of the closure of Figure 1; and
Figure 7 is a perspective view showing principally the hinge for the closure.
In the accompanying drawing there is a lamp 10 which is constructed in order to demonstrate the principles of the invention. This lamp is made of a wire frame 12 (Figure 3), the frame being of simplified construction. It consists of a plurality of risers 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20, each having a substantially straight lower part and a slightly outwardly curved upper part. More or less of such risers may be used in the frame. In any case the upper ends of all of them are connected to an upper frame member 22 which is preferably in the form of a wire as is the remainder of the frame. The lower ends of all of the risers are attached to a lower frame member 23, the shapes of the upper and lower frame members determining the external configuration of the lamp.
An ordinary lamp socket 24 is mounted on a support 2,853,597 Patented Sept. 23, 1958 within the lamp frame, the support comprising a block 26 or some other structural member whichis attached to the lower frame member 26 by means of wires 29, 30, 31, and 32. Although there are four wires illustrated it is appreciated that there may be more or less depending on the' manufacturing expedient which is selected. Inner and outer liners 34 and 36 respectively are attached to the frame, as by cementing or by other standard fastening devices. It is preferred that at least the inner liner be of reflected material, as by being painted white, to enhance the light reflectivityof the lamp. It is within the purview of the invention to make the inner and outer liners either partially or wholly opaque, transparent or with any other light characteristic.
A curved wire handle 40 is attached at its ends to the frame member 22 and has one or more pockets 42 formed in it between the ends thereof. The purpose of the handle is to make the lamp easily portable and also to be used in connection with the support of the closure 44 in the open position. Inasmuch as the lamp is adapted to be 48 (Figure 7) on opposite sides of the handle 40, mount the closure 44 for hinged movement on the upper frame member 28. Since closure 44 is dome shaped, the structural framing members 50 thereof curve upwardly and inwardly to junction 52 at which they are welded or otherwise connected together. Eye 56 is on the closure frame member 46 opposite to the hinge for the closure and is adapted to be fitted in pocket 42 when the closure is moved to the up position (Figure 4.) thereby holding the closure 44 in the selected open position (Figure 2), depending on the location of pocket 42 or others which may be provided in the handle 42. Eye 56 is slidably mounted on the handle- 40 thereby constraining the motion of the closure 44. It is understood that the closure 44 may be lined or covered with a panel 58, the latter being of any desired material although a suggested material would be one which could be colored or which is actually white so that the closure acts as a light reflector.
skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A lamp comprising a wire frame, a lower frame member and an upper frame member constituting a par-t of said wire frame, a lamp socket, means mounting said socket slightly above said lower frame member, a handle attached to said upper frame member in order to facilitate the carrying of said lamp from one place to another, a cover for said frame .and hingedly connected beneath said handle, said handle having at least a part which is curved,
and means connected to said cover and with said curved hinged movement, means for holding said closure in selected positions so that said closure may cover said wire frame and may be moved to a position Where it is capable of f a l h from Within sa f ame, at lea tfiene liner on said closure and on'said frame, said means to hold said closure in selected positions comprising an eye on said u e a re handle a tached:tQsa dirame nd? which p se hrough s y n a: p ck n sa d handle adapted to c mm i we andirel sablysupaert the same.
