(Cl. 119-27) This invention relates generally to a cow positioning device, and particularly to such a device for causing the cow to move rearwardly in her stall whenever the cows back is humped.
It has been a constant problem to maintain cow barns in a clean condition, and troughs behind the cows stalls are provided to facilitate cleaning the same. The problem has been to move the cow back a sufficient distance in the stall to insure depositing the waste products in the trough provided for this purpose. As have numerous other devices designed for the same purpose, this invention is responsive to the inherent humping of the cows back whenever discharging such waste products.
It is an object of my present invention to provide a cow positioning device responsive to the humping of a cows back for producing pain at the forward portion of the cOW, to move the cow rearwardly in her stall whenever the back is humped.
It is another object to provide a device normally spaced above the cows back and including a pivotally mounted arm structure with an actuating element on the rear end thereof, and a pain producing element on the forward end thereof so that humping of the cows back will engage the actuating element and swing said arm on its pivotal axis to engage the pain producing member with the forward portion of the cow, and thus cause the cow to move rearwardly in the stall whenever she humps her back.
More specifically it is an object to provide a pivotally mounted arm structure with the back engaging element on the rear end thereof and a pronged pain producing element on the forward end thereof, with means for adjusting the position of said arm structure and said elements both longitudinally of the cows back and vertically to accommodate various sized cows.
These and other objects and advantages of my invention will more fully appear from the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference characters refer to the same or similar parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Fig. l is a top plan view of my device as mounted in a cows stall;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof showing the cow in dotted position with the back humped;
Fig. 3 is a front end elevational view of my cow positioning device;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged side elevational view of the pivotally mounted arm structure showing the cows back in normal position by dotted line',
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially along the line 5-5 of Fig. 4; and
Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail view of the resilient holddown mechanism for the arm structure support.
As illustrated in the accompanying drawing, I show a cows stall of conventional design having the side rail members 8 and the stanchion designated as an entirety by the numeral 9, of any conventional design. A cleanout trough 10 is provided at the rear of the stall as best shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
2,853,052 Patented Sept. 23, 1958 ice end of the post is pivoted at the lower portion of the bracket 13 on a pivot pin 14, and an intermediate portion of said post is pin connected to the upper portion of the bracket 13 as by a clamping pin 15 which rides in an arcuate slot 13a provided in the upper portion of said bracket. This obviously permits the angle at which the upstanding post 12 is disposed to be easily and quickly adjusted for purposes to be brought out hereafter.
The over-hanging support 11 is fixed to a suitable mounting plate 16 as best shown in Figs. 3 and 6, and this mounting plate 16 is pivotally connected as by pin 16a with a suitable clamping bracket 17 securely clamped to the upper portion of the post member 12. A resilient hold-down spring 18 is mounted around a fixed pin 19 which slidably extends through the lower portion of mounting plate 16, as best shown in Fig. 6. The end of the pin 19 is securely fixed to the lower portion of the clam-ping bracket 17 as by being welded thereto. The pin 19 is threaded and has a stop nut 20 for positively positioning the over-hanging support 11, and a tensioning nut 21 permits adjustment of the hold-down tension in spring 18.
In the form shown, the over-hanging support 11 has a pair of depending mounting members 22 carried thereby, and the lower ends of said members 22 have a swingable arm structure or frame designated as an entirety by the numeral 23 pivotally supported therefrom as by the pivot pins 24. A back engaging pad or actuating element 25 is mounted across the rear portion of the arm structure 23 for engagement with the cows back whenever the same is humped. A suitable pain producing member such as the pronged roller 26 is provided as by being journaled thereon, and a suitable balancing weight 27 is slidably mounted on a supporting frame 28 carried by the arm structure 23. In the form shown, the arm structure 23 is curved longitudinally, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4, and the pad 25 and pronged roller 26 are disposed a substantial distance below the intermediate portions thereof.
The following is a description of the operation of my cow positioning device. When the cow is in normal position in the stall with her neck engaged by the stanchion 9, all portions of my positioning device will be spaced above the cows back as illustrated in Fig. 4, the cows back being shown in said Fig. 4 by the dotted lines underlying the pad 25 and pronged roller 26. However, whenever the cows back is humped the pad 25 will be engaged, tilting the forward portion of the arm structure 23 downwardly and engaging the pronged roller against the forward portion of the top of the cows shoulders, as best shown in Fig. 2. The pins 24 permit free swinging movement of the arm structure 23 for this purpose. In order to avoid injury to the cow by the prongs of the roller 26, the over-hanging support 11 is pivoted on an axis disposed longitudinally of the cow as by the pin 16a, and the spring 18 permits the over-hanging support 11 to swing upwardly against the resilient force thereof on said pin 16a. Theclamping bracket 17 is of course vertically adjustable on the post member 12, and the angle of the post may be adjusted to position the arm structure including the pad 25 and roller 26 longitudinally of the cows back by loosening the clamping screw 15 and swinging said post on the pivot pin 14 into the desired position.
It will be seen that I have provided a relatively simple yet highly efiicient device for positioning a cow within a stall whenever the cows back is humped, and which is particularly designed for easy adjustment and is constructed to prevent injury to the cow while producing the desired results. The balancing weight 27 may be adjusted longitudinally of the cows back to insure proper balancing of the arm structure and maintain both the pad and the pronged roller in spaced relation above the cows back until the back is humped.
It will, of course, be understood that various changes may be made in the form, details, arrangement and proportions of the parts Without departing from the scope of my invention which consists of the matter shown and described herein and set forth in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A cow positioning device comprising an over-hanging support, an arm structure pivotally suspended from said support at an intermediate position of said arm. structure for swinging movement on an axis disposed transversely of a cow positioned thereunder, a pain producing element carried by the forward portion of said arm structure and provided with means for causing the cow pain when engaged thereby, an actuating member carried by the rear portion of said arm structure and normally positioned in slightly spaced relation above the back of a cow disposed thereunder so that whenever the cow humps her back the actuating element will be engaged to swing the forward portion of the arm structure downwardly to shift the pain producing element into engagement with the forward portion of the cow to thereby urge the cow rearwardly whenever the cows back is humped.
2. The structure set forth in claim 1, and adjustable means for balancing said pivoted arm structure to prevent contact between both the actuating member and the pain 4 producing member when the cows back is in normal position.
3. The structure in claim 2 and said pain producing member comprising a pronged roller for engaging the cow whenever the cows back is humped.
4. The structure set forth in claim 2, and the pain producing member being normally positioned above the cows front shoulders for engagement therewith whenever the cows back is humped.
5. The structure set forth in claim 1, and an upstanding attachment member constructed for attachment to one side of a cows stall, with means attaching the same to said over-hanging support.
6. The structure set forth in claim 5, with means associated with said upstanding attachment means to ,ermit vertical adjustment of the over-hanging support, and means for adjusting the position of the arm structure forwardly and rearwardly of the cows back.
7. The structure set forth in claim 6, and said last mentioned means comprising a pivotal attachment between the lower portion of the upstanding attachment means and the side of the cows stall to permit swinging movement of the upper portion of said attachment means.
