3 Claims. (Cl. 78-13) This invention relates to improvements in power presses and relates more particularly to power presses designed for such work as stamping and forging.
One object of the invention is to provide in a press means for forming in a stamping or forging a hole which is inclined with respect to the line of motion of the slide of the press.
According to the invention in a power press a punch or like tool adapted to form an inclined hole in a stamping or forging is inclined to the line of movement of the main slide or ram of the press and is carried by a plug or holder on a cross slide which is guided for transverse movement on the main slide, and surfaces on the cross slide inclined to the line of movement of the main slide at the same angle as the punch co-operate with complementary fixed surfaces inclined at the same angle, whereby as the main slide makes an operative stroke the cross slide is moved transversely on the main slide and the combination of the movements of the main slide and cross slide produces a truly axial movement of the punch at the required angle of inclination to the line of movement of the main slide.
On the return stroke of the main slide the cross slide returns to its initial transverse position and the punch is withdrawn axially from the work. To assist in the return movement of the cross slide it may carry a roller adapted to engage a fixed surface on the press which is inclined at the same angle as the fixed surfaces with which the'inclined surfaces on the cross slide engage.
The cross slide is conveniently mounted in V guides on the main slide for movement at right angles to the line of movement of that slide and the fixed inclined surfaces are formed on dogs which are mounted on or in a bolster fixed to the frame of the press.
One practical embodiment of the invention is illustrated diagrammatically in the accompanying drawings which show the parts of a press concerned in the invention.
In these drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation in part section showing the parts in the positions they assume at the end of the operative stroke of the main slide or ram of the press.
Figure 2 is a plan of the cross slide.
Figure 3 is a front elevation of the press embodying the slide.
In the drawings a is the main slide or ram of a press which makes a vertical operative stroke.
A cross slide b is slidably guided for tranverse movement on the main slide or ram at right angles to the line of movement thereof, the cross slide being mounted in V guides (not shown). A holder or plug c mounted on the lower face of the cross slide carries a punch d which is inclined to the line of movement of the main slide or ram and is adapted to form an inclined hole in a stamping or forging indicated at s.
In order to impart a truly axial movement to the punch the cross-slide b is arranged to move transversely 2,852,970 Patented Sept, 23, 19,58
on the main slide or ram as the latter moves downwardly. For this purpose a rectangular notch e is formed in one end of the cross-slide and a slot 1 is formed in the slide in alignment with the notch. The inner end of the notch e and both ends of the slot are inclined to the line of movement of the main slide at the same angle as the punch and co-operate with the complementarily inclined faces of dogs g, h which are mounted on a bolster fixed to the frame of the press.
Thus as the main slide descends on its operative stroke the cross slide is moved transversely by the dogs and the combination of these movements produces an axial movement of the inclined punch into the work.
On the return stroke of the main slide the dogs return the cross slide to its initial transverse position and the punch is withdrawn axially from the work.
The return movement of the cross-slide is assisted by a roller j which is mounted on a laterally projecting lug k on one end of the slide and is adapted to engage an inclined surface I on the press which is parallel to the operative faces of the dogs.
It will be appreciated that the drawings show only the inclined punch which forms an inclined hole in the work and that the work which is clamped in dies may be acted upon simultaneously by a tool carried by the main slide and by other tools actuated from the main slide and entering the dies from one or each side and/or from a direction opposed to that of the main slide.
One example of work to which the invention is applicable is the hot stamping or forging of water tap bodies in which the axis of the outlet is at an angle other than a right angle to the axis of the tap spindle. Another example is a T union body in which one of the passages is not at right angles to the other.
If the press is engaged on work which does not require an inclined hole the cross slide and the dogs can readily be removed without affecting the other motions of the press.
Figure 3 illustrates a typical press to which the invention is applied, and those parts shown in the earlier figures which are visible also in this figure are indicated with the same reference letters.
I claim:
1. A power press comprising a stationary frame, a main slide mounted thereon for reciprocating motion in respect to the frame in a first straight path, a cross slide mounted upon the main slide for reciprocating motion in respect to the main slide in a second straight path lying transversely of the first path, the frame and cross slide having surfaces one at least of which is inclined obliquely in respect to both the first and second paths, said surfaces slidably contacting one another on travel of the main slide in one direction in said first path and biasing the cross slide in one direction along said second path, whereby the .cross slide is bodily moved along a third straight path extending obliquely to both the first and second paths in a direction predetermined by the ratio that the distance the cross slide is biased in said one direction thereof along said second path bears to the distance the main slide is moved in said one direction there'- of along the first path, and a tool carried by the cross slide and having its length projecting from the cross slide along said third path for passage in the direction of its length into a work piece.
2. A power press as in claim 1, said frame including a projection rigidly formed thereon, said projection extending in the path of reciprocating motion of the main slide and having an inclined surface constituting one of said surfaces, the projection being disposed in position to engage the cross slide on movement of the main slide in said one direction thereof, the cross slide having an edge constituting the other surface.
ice,
3. A power press as in claim 1, further including second surfaces on the cross slide and frame respectively, said second surfaces carnmingly engaging each other on movement of the main slide in a return direction in said first path, one at least of said second surfaces being inclined correspondingly to said one of the first surfaces for biasing of the cross slide in said second path in a return direction thereof responsive to movement of the main slide in said first path in its return direction.
