Description

(No Model.)
" I. N. PHILLIPS.
STATION IND IGATOR.
N Patented Sept. 18, 1883. 8 H m lHlllllllllllllllllll me afi K 7 WITNESSES ATTORNEYS.
V UNITED STATES ISAAC NEWTON PHILLIPS, OF NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE.
STATION-INDICATOR LPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 285,158, dated September 18, 1883.
Application filed January 9, 1883. (X0 model.)
To all whom it may concern: 7,
Be it known that I, ISAAC NE TON'PHIL- LIPs, of Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Station-Indicators, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar'letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is aside elevation of my improvement, parts being broken away. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the lever and pawls, and showing parts of the inner ratchet-wheel and the slide. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the same, parts being broken away.
The object of this invention is to promote convenience and certainty in making known to passengers the name of the next station.
A represents a case, which is designed to be secured to the end of a car or other suitable support and in bearings, in the sides of which revolve the journals of a drum, B. Upon the front of the case A, near its ends, are printed the names of the stations at the termini of the line. Upon the face of the'drum B, and in their regular order, or upon strips of paper or other suitable material attached to the said face of the drum, are printed the names of the various stations of the road, and at the end of the name of each station, and directly under the names of the termini of the road, are printed the distances of the said station from the said tern1ini,as illustrated in Fig. 3, the names of the stations being seen successively through an opening inthe front of the case A. One of the journals of the drum B projects, and to it, at alittle distance apart, are attached two rat-chet-wheels, C D, arranged with their teeth pointing in opposite directions.
To the journal of the drum B, between the two ratchet-wheels O D, is pivoted the angle of a: right-angled lever,E,the end of the upper arm of which is attached to a cord, F. The lower end of the cord F hangs in such aposition' that it can be readily reached and operated by an attendant, and its upper end is attached to the trip-lever G of the bell H, which is-attached to the upper part of the side of the case A.
I is a rod which passes through and works in a hole in the upper arm of the lever B, and to its end parts are attached two pawls, J K, in such positions as to engage with the teeth of the ratchet-wheels O D. project in opposite directions, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, so that one of the said pawls will be held away from its ratchet-wheel when the other pawl is in working position. Upon the outer end of the red I is formed a small crank, L, which projects at right angles with the pawls J K, and to it is attached the end of a spiral or other suitable spring, M. The other end of the spring M is attached to the lever E. XVith this construction either pawl The pawls J K J K can be brought into working position by adjusting the crank L, and will be held in that position by the spring M until the crank L is adj usted into the other position. The end of the lower arm of the lever E has two slots formed in it at right angles with each other, to receive a slide-bar, N, and a pin attached to the said slide-bar. The middle part of the bar N is curved downward, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, to bring it into proper position to engage with the lever E. The end parts of the barN are straight and slide through bearings O, attached to the case A.
To the end of the drum B are attached pins P, arranged in a circle to engage with the ends of the slide-bar N, and thus stop the revolutions of the said drum. \Vith this construction, when the pawls J K are arranged as shown in Fig. 1, a downward pull upon the lever E or cord F will draw the upper arm of the lever E downward and cause the pawl J to revolve the drum B. The same movement of the upper arm of the lever E causes the lower arm of the said lever to slide the bar N back, causing its rear end to project so that it will be struck by the next pin P and stop the revolution of the drum B at the proper point todisplay the name of the next station. At the end of the line the crank L is adjusted to bring the pawl K into position to engage with the ratchet-wheel D, so that the upward movement of the cord F, as it is drawn upward by the return movement of the trip-lever G, will revolve the drum Bin the opposite direction and display the stationnames in the reverse order. At each downward movement ICC of the cord F the bell H is struck to call the attention of the passengers to the change in the indicator. The ease of movement of the drum B is regulated by the brake-springs Q, attached to the ends of cross-bars Q, and which rest upon the face of the said drum at its ends, and are held down with any desired force by the set-screw R, as shown in Fig. 1.
The operating mechanism at the side of the case A is covered and protected by a casing, S, which is secured to the side of the said case A,and'is slotted for the passage of the lever E and crank. L.
Ha ving thus fully described my. invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent 1. A station-indicator constructed substantially as herein shown and described, and consisting of the drum provided with two ratchetwheels operated by pawls connected with a le ver, and stopped by a slide-bar engaging with pins attached to the said drum, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the drum-shaft and ratchets thereon, of the angled lever E, the cord F, the bell-trip lever G, the rod I, carrying the pawls J K, the adjustable crank L, and the spring M, whereby the down and up movement of the cord will respectively cause the drum to move in opposite directions, as described.
3. The combination, with the drum B, having a circle of pins, and ratchets O D on its shaft, of the lever E, having two slots at right angles to each other, the cord F, and the slidebar N, carrying'a pin, said slide-bar being curved in the middle, straight at both ends, and arranged in bearings 0, whereby the drum will be revolved and the slide operated simultaneously, as described.
ISAAC NINVTON PHILLIPS.
