SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 285,080, dated September 18, 1883.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, EDWARD I-I. SPENCER, Jr., of the city and county of Providence,
and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buttons and Studs; and I do hereby declare the following specification, taken in connection with the so that they may he slid or turned on the head into a position to bring the long arms of said members at right angles to the head, in order that the button or stud may be conveniently applied, and also'into aposition to bring such arms parallel with the head to secure the button or stud in place, as will hereinafter ap pear.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l repre sents a vertical section of a sleeve-button embodying the invention, with theJ shaped members in position for the button to be applied. Fig. 2 shows a rear view of the same. i represents a vertical section ofthe button, with the J shaped members in position to hold it in place. Fig. 4 shows a rear view of the same. Figs. 5 and 6 show, respectively, a vertical section and a rear View of a modification.
A is the button-head, which may be of any preferred shape. To this head a back plate, B,"is secured, which plate is provided with slots 11, to receive the arms 0 c of the two J shaped members 0 O, and is provided with bridge-pieces b, upon which the said members are respectively hooked, so as to slide or turn from the position shown in Figskl and 2 to that shown in Figs. 3 and 4." As shown in the several figures, the members 0 O are each composed of a long arm, 0, ashort arm, a, and a curved connecting portion, 0 each member, as a whole, resembling a letter J in shape. The members 0 C are held in engagement with the bridge-pieces b b, upon which they are hooked, by a plate, D, which is preferably a spring secured in position by lugs or ears (I d on the plate B, or in any preferred manner. In order that the members 0 may be locked button-holes.

The members 0 0 being in the position shown .in Figs. 1 and 2, the button is applied by inserting the arms a c of said members into the button-holes, and sliding or turning said members around the bridge-pieces b 1) until the arms 0 c are parallel with the buttonhead, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and the button may be removed by returning the members G G to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
In Figs. 5 and 6 is shown a modification, in which the back plate, B, is intended to have a spring function and the plate D to be rigid. The curved portions 0 of the members 0 are here represented as flattened at 3/ on their outer surfaces, in order that said members may be more securely held in the position shown by the spring.
Froman inspectibn of Figs. 1 and 2 it will be seen that the arms 0 c of the members 0 0 come in close contact with each other when in the position shown in said figures, and that therefore they can be easily inserted into the It will be seen, also, that when said members are turned into the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the arms 0 0 will form the back, and the curved portions c 0' will perform the office of a shank.
It will also be understood that by making the members 0 G in J form, and hooking them on the bridge-pieces b I), the expensive con struction of a hinge-joint of the usual form is avoided.
What I claim, and ters Patent, is-
1. The button or stud herein described, having ahead and two J-shaped members, 0 G, which are hooked to the head, substantially as described, and are adapted to be turned into the positions specified, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A button or stud having its head prodesire to secure by Letvided with a slotted plate, B, having bridgepieees b, the J shaped members 0 G, hooked upon said bridge-pieces, and suitable means, as described, for holding said members in engagementwith the bridge-pieces, substantially as set forth.
3. A button or stud having its head provided with a slotted plate, 13, having bridgepieees b, the J'shaped members 0 O, hooked upon said bridge-pieces, and provided with salient angles 00 x or eanrsurfaees, and a spring for holding the said members in position, sub stantially as set forth.
4.. A button or stud having its head provided with a slotted plate, B, having bridgepieces I), the J-shaped members 0 G, hooked upon said bridge-pieces, provided with salient angles 00 w or cam-surfaces and flattened at y 1 and a spring for holding the said members in position, substantially as set forth.
