Application May 17, 1954, Serial No. 430,163
6 Claims. (Cl. 24-265) This invention relates generally to a fastening device and more particularly to a device for fastening the ends of a wrist band to a wrist watch.
The main object of the invention resides in the provision of a watch band attaching device which may be easily and readily opened and closed upon the insertion of a finger nail.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a watch band attaching device which may be easily and readily opened and closed without the need for any special tools to permit the easy and readyfastening and unfastening of the wrist band with the wrist Watch casing.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a watch band attaching device which is sturdy and durable in construction, reliable and ellicient in operation, and inexpensive to manufacture and assemble.
For other objects and a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which: I
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a wrist watch showing the invention incorporated thereon;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary bottom plan view thereof and showing the device in the closed position;
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 but showing the device in the open position;
Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional view taken along the line 4-4 of Figure 2 and showing the manner in which the device is opened;
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 4 but taken along the line 55 of Figure 2;
Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 5 but showing the device in the open position and Figure 7 is an exploded perspective view of'the parts comprising the invention.
Referring now more in detail to the drawing, there is generallly indicated at 10 a wrist watch including an expansion bracelet 11 and a wrist watch casing 12, both of conventional design and substantially as illustrated.
The casing 12 is integrally formed at each end with the laterally spaced ears 13 between which are removably mounted the spring urged attaching pins 14, in the usual manner of such constructions, it being possible to remove the spring mounted pins 14 by the employment of a jewelers tool, as is well known to those skilled in the art.
In the practice of my invention, novel means are provided for releasably attaching the ends of the expansion bracelet 11 to the shafts 14 without the requirement of any special tools and merely upon the insertion of a finger nail in a manner which will hereinafter, become clear. The device according to the present invention includes a hollow rectangular casing 15 (Fig. 7) open at the top and integrally formed along one side with a substantially cylindrical portion 16 adapted to partially envelope the attaching pins 14, the open upper edge of the casing 15 2,85,?83 Patented Sept. 9, 1958 at the ends and the other side thereof being integrally formed with the lugs 17 and 18.
A rectangular cover plate 19 is adapted to fit over the upper edge of the casing 15 and is provided at each end with the slots 20 adapted to receive upwardly therewithin the lugs 17 as well as a slot 21 along one side adapted to receive upwardly therethrough the lug 18, the cover 19 being secured to the casing 15 by bending the lugs 17 and 18 inwardly across the upper face of the cover, as shown in Figure l.
The side of the cover 19 near one end is integrally formed with a raised car 22 having a central opening 23 and is provided near its other end with an arcuate slot 24.
The expansion bracelet 11 includes the juxtaposed rectangular elements 25 and the juxtaposed S-shaped elements 26, the rectangular elements 25 being normally urged into coincided relationship with adjacent rectangular elements by internal spring means, not shown, which also serves to normally urge the S-shaped elements 26 into coinciding relationship with the adjacent S-shaped elements, as shown in Figure 1. The free end of one of endmost rectangular elements 25 is pivotally connected to the ear 22 by means of a grommet 27 rotatably mounted within the opening 23, while the free end of the adjacent S-shaped element 26 is slidably mounted within the arcuate slot 24 by means of a second grommet, not shown, whereby to pivotally connect one end of the expansion bracelet 11 to the cover plate, in the manner shown. I
The cover plate 19 is provided with a transverse slot 28 for a purpose which will hereinafter become clear.
A clasp 29 adapted to overlie the cover plate 19 is integrally formed along one side at right angles thereto with a rectangular strip or flange 30 adapted to fit downwardly through the slot 28, the opposite ends of the strip 30 being bent as shown in phantom in Figure 7 whereby to pivotally mount the clasp 29 within slot 28, as will be obvious. The other side of the clasp 29 is integrally formed with the lugs 31 bent downwardly at right angles thereto and which are adapted to resiliently engage the adjacent edge of the cover plate 19, whereby to permit the snapping engagement of clasp 29 with cover plate 19, as shown in Figure 5. Intermediate the downwardly bent lugs 31, the clasp 29 is integrally formed with an upwardly bent portion 32 adapted to receive a finger nail or the like thereunder whereby to permit the upward snapping of the clasp 29 out of engagement with the cover plate 19 (Fig. 4). The clasp 29 alongside each of the lugs 31 is also integrally formed with the projections 33 adapted to overlie the attaching pins 14 and to lock the latter within the substantially cylindrical portion 16 (Figs. 5 and 6) when the clasp is in the closed position.
An identical device made up of the casing 15, cover plate 19 and clasp 29 will, of course, be provided for the other end of the expansion bracelet 11 and will similarly releasably engage the other attachment pin 14.
In operation, with the free ends of the elements 25 and 26 connected to the cover plate 19, the latter secured to the casing 15 by means of the lugs 17, 18 and with the clasp 29 pivotally mounted on the cover plate 19 and in the open position, the attachment pin 14 may be inserted downwardly within the substantially cylindrical portion 16 (Fig. 6). The clasp 19 may then be snapped downwardly into the position of Figure 5 with the lugs 31 resiliently engaging the edge of the cover plate, which action causes the projections 33 to retain the attachment pin 14 within the cylindrical portion 16. In order to remove the wrist band 11, it is only necessary to insert the finger nail downwardly (Fig. 4) below the upwardly extending portion 32 and to snap the clasp 29 upwardly (Fig. 6) whereupon the attaching pin 14 may be removed from the substantially cylindrical portion 16.
In order to increase the attractiveness of the device, the undersurface of the casing may be provided with an ornamental design similar to that carried by the rectangular elements 25.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
