(Cl. 155-127) The present invention relates to a utensil, such as a bowl, dish, plate or the like, and novel structural means whereby it may be attached to and detachably anchored on a relatively stationary support such as, for instance, a table, counter, tray on a high chair and which, under the circumstances, will be held in its intended position against accidental displacement.

It is a matter of common knowledge that small children are inclinded to upset and spill the contents from bowls and thelike, sometimes accidentally and under other circumstances either deliberately or while provoking fun or amusement for themselves. Many and varied styles of baby feeding bowls and containers have been oifered by others to cope with the problem. As typical of the general state of development of the art one might refer to the French et a1. Patent 1,550,989 of May 1, 1951, showing a so-called babys plate or dish and means whereby it is bolted or equivalently anchored in its usable position on the tray of a high chair. To the end that the solution of the problem may be more successfully and effectually attained it is the obvious object here to structurally and otherwise improve upon prior art adaptations in this field of endeavor.

In carrying out the invention the receptacle, bowl or the like has a thickened bottom or base. This serves to accommodate a groove and the groove is endless and becomes a keeper-accommodating keyway or channel. This channeled bottom is fitted removably and telescopically down into an annulus or band which borders a hole in a relatively stationary high chair tray or. other support and latch means is mounted on the band having detents which are resiliently snapped into the keyway, thereby holding the bowl in its desired position and frustrating any effort or attempt on the part of the user to unwittingly or otherwise capsize it.

Other objects, features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying sheet of illustrative drawings.

Fig. 1 is a fragmentary view of a relatively stationary support member on which the detachable bowl is mounted in a manner to achieve the desired end results.

Fig. 2 is a section on the horizontal line 22 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view in perspective and detailing certain of the essential components.

Fig. 4 is an exploded perspective view showing al of the details.

Referring now to the drawings and with respect to Figs. 1, 3 and 4, the relatively stationary support member is denoted by the numeral 6. In. actual practice this may constitute a table, eating counter, bottom of a tray on a high chair (not detailed) or a special board or panel such as is sometimes used as a separate part and is clamped atop the high chair tray. In any event, it is a so-called relatively stationary support member and in keeping with the present invention it is provided at a given point with a circular well or hole 8. This is lined or marginally bordered by an endless ring or band 10 of metal or suitable material. As will be seen in Figs. 1 and 3 in particular the Width of the band is such that the lower edge or half-portion 12 depends below the underneath or bottom side 14 of the support member. The upper edge 16 is flush with the top surface 18. At diametrically opposite points the depending portion 12 is provided with slots or openings 20 to accommodate the projectible and retractible detents or keepers 22 on the resilient latching collar 24. This part 24 comprises a split collar which embraces the slotted lower half portion 12 of the fixed band or lining 16. The intermediate portion of the collar is secured by fastenings 26 to the portion 28 of the band. The ends of the collar on opposite sides of the split are denoted by the numerals 30. and 32 and are spaced apart and the end 32 is bent upon itself to provide a finger-gripping knob which is conveniently denoted at 34. Thus with the-split collar partially or substantially embracing the endless band and with the band secured in and lining the hole suitable hold-down means is provided. This means serves to accommodate the properly constructed container 36. As before stated this container may be thought of as a dish, bowl, or an equivalent container. In any event, the bottom thereof is thickened to providea suitable base 38 which is circular in bottom plan. This has an endless rim portion 40 which in turn is provided with an endless groove 42 constituting a keyway for reception of the keying or latching detents 22. The construction is of the utmost in simplicity and the drawings are such that one, having read the preceding description of the details and statement of the invention and objectives, will be in a posi tion to clearly understand what the concept is all about and how the invention herein disclosed constitutes a satisfactory solution of the problem. In these circumstances a more extensive description appears to be unnecessary.

The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.

What is claimed as new is as follows:

1. In combination, a relatively stationary support member having a circular opening therein, a sheet material endless band fitted into said opening and having its upper portion attached to the cooperating marginal edge portions of the opening and thus forming a lining for the opening, the lower portion of said band projecting downwardly through said opening and below the bottom surface of said support, said depending lower portion being provided with circumferentially spaced slots, a collar substantially surrounding the depending portion of said band and having an intermediate portion thereof fixed to said band and having end portions partially embracing the band and cooperating with said slots and provided with inwardly projecting detents, and a receptacle having a circular base extending downwardly through said openband projecting downwardly through the opening and having portions attached to the marginal edge of the opening, the depending portion being provided with slots, a collar having a central portion fixed to the band and having end portions partially embracing the band and opposed to the slots and provided with detents, said collar being of split construction and the split ends being separated and one end having a coil return bend providing a finger-grip, and a bowl having a circular base extending downwardly through said opening and being snugly embraced by said band, the marginal edge portion of said References Cited in the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS Matthews Feb. 15, 1910 Trocel July 9, 1929
