4 Claims. (Cl. 333-1845) This invention relatesto a method of-and apparatus for making corrections, alterations or additions on a film or the like bearing photo-composed type. The film may be an ordinary film bearing a layer of developed and fixed photo-sensitive emulsion or may be a stripping film consisting of a thin sensitised film adhesively secured to a base of transparent film or paper or other suitable material.
In some systems oftype design, the characters are all alignedon a standard base line whereas in other systems the characters are all designed; on a standard centre or body line. An object of the-present invention is to provide an improved method ofv and apparatus for making corrections, alterations or additions on afilrn or the like bearing photo-composed type which is applicable to both systems of type design.
In the method according to the invention, a portionof film bearing a required image is substituted in place of a corresponding portion of the film or the like and the image, which is usually a line of photo-composed type, is located in predetermined relation to a datum, or basic gauge for the purpose of cuttingout and substitution, by reference to the top and bottom bounding edges of the image, that is to say relatively to two imaginary parallel lines which delineate the tops of the ascenders and the bottoms of the descenders of the characters of a line.
Thesinvention is primarily intended for substituting one or more lines of photo-composed type for one or more other lines of photo-composed type for the purpose of correction or alteration of the text but the invention may also be used to insert aline of photo-composed type in a desired position on a blank. portion of the film of the like.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood it will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings which .show, by way of example, one form of construction of apparatus according to theinvention.
An apparatus or mechanism for carryingthe invention into effect will nowbe described with reference to the drawings:

Referring to the drawings, the apparatus comprises a table A having a straight edge A along one side thereof which straight edge projects slightly above the surface of the table (as can be seenmore clearly in Fig. 2) in order to locate aside edge of a film or the like placed upon the table A. A stripping film bearing slightly spaced lines of photocomposed type set at right angles to a straight side edge of the film and at a fixed marginal distance therefrom which it is desired to substitute in place of lines of photocomposed type on the original film or the like to be corrected or altered, or which are to be added to said fihn, is placed emulsion-side up upon the table A and the side edge of the stripping film is located against the straight edge A of the table A so that the lines of photocomposed type extend horizontally or at right angles to the straight edge and at a fixed marginal distance from the table straight edge A The film is secured in place on the table in any convenient manner, for example by means of adhesive strips or by means of suitable clamps which may if desired be provided on the table. The parts B and B of the sighting or locating mechanism are located on the pins B and B and the drum A is turned to slide the table along the frame A until the image of the first required line of photocomposed type is exactly framed in the aperture b of the sighting mechanism. The top and bottom edge of the aperture are defined by the inner edges of the ledges b and b of the bars B and B and as previously explained these bars have been spaced apart by gauging distance pieces B which are of a thickness appropriate to the body size of the type so that the top and bottom bounding edges of the image delineating the tops of the ascenders and the bottom of the descenders can be framed within the aperture b. The required image is thereby located in predetermined relation to a datum or basic gauge consisting of the locating pins B, B on the frame and the straight edge A on the table. A cutting tool C of appropriate thickness is then inserted in the aperture b and guided by the vertical faces of the bars B and B makes incisions in the emulsion-bearing component of the stripping film by running the cutting edge 0 along the edge b of the aperture under light pressure sufiicient to cut through only the emulsion-bearing component of the film and leaving the supporting backing thereof untouched and then reversing the tool and running it similarly along the edge I; of the part B Part B of the sighting mechanism is then moved away from part B by rocking, turning the part B about the pin B. If desired the straight edge B may be provided on the part B and the bars B and B may be made to rock backwardly about transverse pivots so as to give access to the film and to the straight edge B Having removed the bars B and B transverse incisions are made at the ends of the line of photo-composed type and one end of the portion thus cut out from the emulsion-bearing component of the stripping film is freed from the base of the stripping film by means of any suitable sharp bladed instrument. A strip of film of other transparent material bearing a pressure sensitive adhesive of greater adhesive strength than that holding the emulsion-bearing component of the stripping film to the base thereof is then placed over the cut out portion bearing the desired image and is located against the straight edge A of the table and against the straight edge B of the part B of the sighting mechanism so that this adhesive strip, hereinafter referred to as the transfer strip, is positioned in predetermined relation to the datum consisting of the locating pins B and B and the straight edge A Pressure is then applied to the transfer strip to adhesively attach thereto temporarily the cut out or severed portion of film component bearing the required matter. The transfer strip is then peeled off to gether with the required image bearing portion of film component adhesivelyattached thereto. A coating of quick-drying pressure adhesive is then applied to the temporarily free underside of this required image-bearing portion of film component and this adhesive is of greater adhesive strength than that of the pressure sensitive adhesive of the transfer strip. The freshly applied adhesive is then covered with a suitable glassine paper and the transfer strip with the attached image-bearing portion or" the substitute film is then placed upon a suitable support. If more lines than one are to be substituted on the original film, these further lines are similarly dealt with and placed in order on the said support.
When all the other correction or other desired lines have thus been dealt with, the original film or the like A with one longitudinal edge located against the straight edge A of the table. Part B of the sighting mechanism is replaced on the pin B and the drum A is turned so as to sight or locate within the aperture 12 the first line of photo-composed type to be removed, or the portion of film to bear additional matter as the the case may be. The portion to be replaced is thus disposed in the same relation to the datum consisting of the pins B, B and straight edge A as that previously bearing the required image on the correction or substitute film. The portion to be replaced is now removed either by scraping away only the emulsion bearing member of the film, by means of the scraping edge 0 of the tool C inserted in the aperture b, or by stripping off only the emulsion-bearing component by means of the hook c in the event of the film or the like being of the stripping type. In this latter case the separation is performed by inserting the sharp hookshaped edge C of the tool between the emulsion-bearing component and the base component of the film under light pressure at the edge of the film beyond the printed area and stripping olf from the base member of the film, the portion of the emulsion-bearing part thereof to be replaced, by means of the shearing action of the corners of the tool edge C against the shearing lips b and b of the bars B and B Part B of the sighting mechanism is then removed and the appropriate transfer strip with the required portion of the substitute fihn is then located against the straight edges A and B so that this transfer strip and film re-occupy the position it originally occupied in relation to the datum so that the required image-bearing portion of the substitute film is caused to occupy the space vacated by the portion removed of the original film, the protective glassine strip having first been removed from the transfer strip. Pressure is now applied to the transfer strip to adhesively secure the required image-bearing portion to the substitute film or the like to the base or backing of the original film. The transfer strip is then removed, leaving the required image-bearing portion in accurate alignment and register with the body of the photo-composed matter on the original film.
A similar method to that described above is employed where two or more lines are to be removed together and replaced by the same or a different number of other lines. In such a case the sighting mechanism is first positioned to sight the top or bottom bounding edge of the matter to be dealt with and a corresponding incision is made and the table is then moved to sight the other bounding edge of the image and the other incision is then made.
What we claim is:
1. Apparatus for making corrections, alterations and additions on a film bearing lines of photo-composed type, including in combination a table having a straight edge arranged to locate a side edge of a film, a supporting frame. on which the table is linearly movable, means for linearly moving the table on the frame and for securing the table against movement on the frame, and sighting means for accurately indicating the position of the film carried by the relatively movable table comprising a pair of members having straight edges, means for locating the pair of members on the supporting frame, above and immediately adjacent the film on the table with the straight edges substantially normal to the straight edge of the table, and replaceable spacing members at the ends of said pair of members whereby the straight edges of said pair of members may be variably spaced in parallelism with each other.
2. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, in which the replaceable spacing members are gauge blocks and the pair of members are clamped together by threaded means adjacent the gauge blocks.
3. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, in which the locating means comprise a pair of pins, upwardly extending from the frame, one at either side of the table, and engageable in holes in the sighting means, one of said pins being rotatable about an eccentric axis whereby a slight angular adjustment may be given to the parallel straight edges of the pair of members.
4. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, in which the pair of members comprising the sighting means are provided with straight adjacent sides parallel to each other and to said straight edges forming a wider slot than the space between said straight edges whereby a cutting knife may be received between said adjacent sides and accurately guided for cutting the film on the table.
