UNITED STATES PATENT OEIAICE.A
HENRY c. MoiLwAiN, or NULLs MTLLs, INDIANA.
CLOTH EswAsl-IER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,459, dated September 4, 1883. Application sied Maron 15,1383. (Modem Ton/ZZ whom, it may concern,.-
` Be it known that I, HENRY CLAY MCIL- WAIN, of Nulls Mills, in the county of Fayette and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvement in Clothes- Washers, of which the following is a full,
Iclear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate n c1othes-washers simple and inexpensive in cured a-central plate, which has a `band se cured in a slot in its lower part,to receive the split lower end of the handle and connect it with the washer, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A represents a circular chamber, which is tapered-upward. To the wall of the chamber A, at a little distance from the bottom and top ofthe said chamber, are attached downwardly inclined or flaring anges B C. In the wall of the chamber A, beneath the up# per parts of the fianges B C, are formed small openings D E, to `let the air escape. In an opening in the top of the chamber A is secured a collar, F, through which the handle G passes.` The `handle G is slotted longitudinally from its lower end to receive the central plate, H, which divides the chamber A into two equal parts, and the edges of which `are soldered or otherwise secured to the wall of the said chamber. In the lower middle part of the plate H is formed a slot in which is secureda band," I, of such a size as to receive and serve as a socket for the lower end of the handle G.
With this construction,'when the washer is forced downward upon the clothes in a tub or other suitable vessel, the air within the chamf` ber A has a free escape through the holes or openings E, and is followed by the water, which is forced up through the clothes at the open bottoms of the said chambers by the weight or pressure of the water on the outside, and through the openings Dv from the space be neath the flange B. The upward taper of the chamber A compresses the water that is forced .into it and causes the water to 'escape with is forced out by its own weight, and as the raised, the water within the said chamber A n water that is in the space beneath the lower flange, B, cannot escape through the openings D into the cylinder as rapidly as the. air escapes, the clothes will'be caused to adhere to the flange by suction, so that the clothes will be raised to the surface at every upward movement of the washer, and quickly and thoroughly cleaned by the currents of water caused to pass th rough and against the clothes by the movements of the washer.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a clothes-washer, the tapering cham- A ber A, provided with' the downwardly-inclined iianges B C at its lower and upper parts, respectively, and with the openings D E beneaththe upper parts of the said anges, sub stantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a clothes-washer, the tapering chamber A, provided with the downwardly-inclined flanges B C, and the openings D E of the central plate, H, secured within the said chamber, and having the bandlI at itslower end, and the slotted handle G, substantially as herein shown and described.
