To all whom, it` may concern Be it known that I, JOHN J. DE LANOEY, of Binghamton, in the county; of Broome and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Balanced Slide-Valve, of which-the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Myinvention relates to that class of slidevalves that are iitted to work beneath a faceplate placed inthe steam-chest, as shown in the LettersPatent" granted to me .I une 20, 1876, No. 17 9,002, reissued June 27, 1882, and No. 261,688, dated July 25, 1882.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which si'milar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a` plan view of my improved valve arrangements as contained in a steamchest, the cover being removed. Fig. 2 is a plan view withthe face-plate removed from the chest, showingthe upper sideof the balance-plate. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the valve, both the face-plate and the balance-plate being removed. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the steam-chest and valve. Fig. 5 is an inverted plan view oi' the balance-plate.
The valve A is of rectangular form, open top and bottom, and is fitted upon its outside with packing-bars a, set in grooves. The face` plate B lits closely in the steam-chest, with the exception of openings I) at the cornersand open` ings c c at opposite sides of the steam-chest,
which areprovided` to allow free circulation ,of oil and steam. This plate is supported by rests cast upon its under side, that take upon the valve-seat5` or` they may be supported by` lugs cast upon the inner surface of the chest.
The parts above described are substantially asl shown in the Letters Patent-aforesaid.
D isthe balance-plate, resting upon the packing-bars a of the valve, and formedwith anges upon its under side, that fit within the top of thevalve, so that, the plate shall be moved with and by the valve. i rlhe upper surface of the balance-plate isformed with grooves or countersinks e, extending around the plate at a distance from its edges about the width of the packing-bars a beneath. Y These grooves or countersinks e are connected by crossgrooves with the central aperture, f, at the center of the plate, so that the countersinks are `connected to the exhaust-cavity of the valveL The object of this construction is for the purpose of balancing the pressure, and for conducting the steam that may leak past the outer edges of the balance-plate to the exhaust. The groove will also serve for the admission of exC haust-steam and oil between the upper side of the balance-plate and the under side of the face-plate. By using these countersinks I obtain a wearingsurface around the aperture f that is without pressure or friction, and the oil being conducted by the grooves e to the under `side of the face-plate, no oil-hole is required in the center of the plate B. At the ends of the balance-plate D are grooves i i for the admission of steambetween the two plates for lubricating the portion not covered by the grooves c in the movement of the valve. In this man- -ner the steam and oil is passed over the whole wearin g-surface between the face-plate and the balance-plate at every movement of the valve, either forward or back. i
At k upon the cover of the steam-chest is a valve for the admission of air when 'the engine `is running without steam. The projections Z upon the face-plate are for receiving the ends of set-screws for holding the plate down to its position. l
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- PATENT OFFICE.
The balance-plate D, having a central aperture, and formed on its upper side with wearing-surfaces separated by grooves or counterture,i`n combinati-on with the faceplate B and the slide-valve A, havin gpacking-bars u, subi stantially as described.
