UNITED STATES 1 PATENT OFFICE" EDWARD KELLS, or CLEVELAND, OHIO.
METHOD OF AND MEANS FOR COOLING LA RD AND LIKE MATERIALSP SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,212, dated September 4,1883. I
Application filed March 22; 1883. (Nomodel) To all whom it may concern:-
Be it known that I, EDWARD KELLS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Gayahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Method of and Means for Cooling Lard-and like Materials; and I do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 1 Figures 1 and 2 are vertical sectional views of the apparatus. Fig. 3v is a plan view of a portion of the box with a cylinder having I 5 the cap removed, and Figs. 4 and 5 are views of modifications.
This invention relates to means for chilling or freezing petroleum and its products, lard, and like material to such a degree as to bring it to the desired consistency of granulation for further treatment or pressing to obtain paraffine-wax. l The main objects of this invention are to chill or freeze paraffine or other oils quickly and uniformly for pressing, and to chill or freeze the interior or middle portion as well as the exterior portion of the body of oil during the process of freezing the same, whereby the entire mass is equally frozen and well granulated.
My invention consists in a plurality of tanks, cylinders, or like holders provided with inte-. rior and connecting pipes for the purpose of cooling oil quickly and uniformly.
. My invention further consists in the combination, with atank, cylinder, or holder, of a movable slide or plunger arranged within said cylinder, adaptedto be used for removing the frozen oil from the cylinder.
0 My invention further consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the annexed drawings, A represents a 5 box or chamber, which may be of any desired shape and size. Arranged within thisbox are a plurality of tanks or holders, B, which may be made of any desired shape; but preference, however, is made to cylinders. These cylinders to receivethe paraffine or oil to be chilled or frozen are fitted at both ends with removable caps to, substantially as shown.
The lettercG represents a pipe communicating with the cooling agent, preferably cold -water, in the box. This pipe, which is connected at the-upper end of the first cylinder of the series, passes within the .same and extendsparallelly downward, then passes across near the bottom of the cylinder, thence parallelly upward to or near the top of the cylinder, and thence outward in a horizontalldirection through the same into the next or adjacent cylinder. The pipe passes downward across and upward through this cylinder in the same manner as it does in the preceding cylinder, and the pipe is passed throughthe following ones in the same manner until the last of the series has been coupled with interior cooling-pipes, as shown. The number andrelative arrangement of these pipes will depend upon the size of the tanks and circumstances, The water or other cooling agent placed .within the box surrounds all the tanks contained therein and cools the oil on the contact surfaces. The pipes passing through the interior, of the cylinders in communication with the cooling agent cool or freeze the middle or central portion of the oil within the respective cylinders, and at the same time materially hasten the uniform cooling or freezing of the oil. Within each cylinder or tank is properly arranged and fitted a movable plunger or slide, D, to move on the pipes of the cylinder, andeach slide is provided with a chain or other flexible means for operating the same to withdraw the frozen oil from the cylinder.
Each slide is formed with an opening for the passage of the liquid oil below when the same is at the upper end of the cylinder during the process of filling the. cylinders. These tanks or cylinders 'may be arranged in the boxes or cases, either. vertically or horizontally, as shown, and in all other respects a relative ar- .rangement of .the adjuncts of the cylinders will be the same. In the horizontally-arranged tanks plugs covering openings for the passage of the ,oil will be provided. These cylinders or tanks are retained in proper positions and from displacement by suitable braces.
The water in the box surrounding the cylinders may be cooled by ice or other means.
As the object of chilling or freezing parafline and oils is well known, I do not deem a moreextended explanation herein essential to 1 this invention.
p I reserve the right to vary the construction a plurality of cylinders with interior pipes and movable slides, and pipes connecting the cylinders, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in presence of two-witnesses. I
EDWARD KELLS.
