Description

I UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
AueUs'r wrman, OF CHICAGO, ILLINoIs.
I VAULT COVER AND VENTILATOR.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent-N0. 284,203, dated September 4, 1883.
I I 4 I Application filed January 8,1883. (No model.) I
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AUGUST W. HERE, a. citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vault-Covers and Ventilators, of which the following is a specification,
v1z-: I I I I This invention relates to improvements in ventilating-registers, vault-covers, and simi: lar articles; and it consists in certain novel details of construction, which will behereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims. I
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, Iwill now proceed to de-- scribe its construction and operation, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan view of my device; Fig. 2, a side view of the same; Fig. 3, a view of one of the hinged sections, and Fig. 4 a sectional view, somewhat enlarged, of one-half of my cover'or frame and one of its hinged sections. p A representsa cast fpamaof circular, rectangular, or any desired form, provided with a central cross or division bar, A, and having its inner under edges rabbeted out for the reception of two or more doors or sections, B, which are secured to the central division-bar, A, by strap-hinges cm, as shown. These sections are arranged tobe opened and closed and held in any position-by means of any desired devicesas, forinstance, the use of springknobs or rods adapted to be grasped by the hand. I y l The upper side of the frame Ais formed or provided with gratings Q, slightly raised above the frame, as shown, which effectually protect the hinged sections from injury.
The hinged doors or sections B B are each a skeleton frame, having their inner and lower edges or cornersrabbeted out, as shown in Fig. 4, and aplate of glass inserted, which I rests upon lugs bb, .cast upon one side of the It will be readily understood that when this device is used to cover coal-holes and similar places in a sidewalk, light 'is given to thevault by the glass panels, and either one or both of the hinged sections may be opened for ventilation without danger to passers-by, as the grating O is not. disturbed. The grating may be made removable for stowing away coal, &c., and the sections closing against rubber packing a in the rabbets of the frame A prevents any water from reaching thei-nterior of the vault, and any snow or rain accumulating upon the glass beneath the grating passes off throughsmall openings 0 in the raised frame of said grating.
I When used as a ventilator or register in the interior of houses, the glass panels admit of a view of the ventilating-shaft or the room beand removable grating G, substantially as described.
2. A vault-cover or ventilator-frame con-- sisting of the frame A, having cross-bar A, raised grating 0, provided with drain-openings 0, one or more hinged sections, B, having glass panels supported by lugs b b and pins 1/ 12, closing against a rubber packing, c, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses. I
AUGUST w. Henri.
