C. i216) This invention relates to a door lock, and more particui larly to a door lock of the type commonly referred to as a cylindrical door lock, which includes novel clogging means for Vselectively dogging the outer operating men.- ber of the door lock to prevent retraction of the latch bolt and opening of the door.
The structure of the dogging means disclosed herein constitutes an improvement over the dogging means disclosed in United States Patent No. 2,724,607, dated November 22, 1955, and is intended for use in the same cylindrical door latch operating unit originally disclosed '-Lf in United States Patent No. 2,733,088, dated January 3l, 1956; said operating unit being intended for use on passage doors, but adapted to receive, through the rotatable knob spindles thereof, other components that co-act with the elements of the basic unit to render to said unit various locking functions.
The cylindrical door lock illustrated in Patent No. 2,724,607, and particularly in Fig. 9 thereof, was intended for use on bathroom and bedroom doors and included a clogging bar having a head portion which was cammed rearwardly relatively to the lock case into dogging position upon depression of the pushbutton extending from the inner knob. As the head portion of the dogging bar moved towards clogging position, it urged the retractor of the lock rearwardly against the retractor springs until the dogging bar reached clogging position whereupon `said retractor was returned to its normal position by the said prings and engaged an abutment on the Ibar which reained the bar in clogging position until released by retraction ofthe retractor through rotation of the inner knob or depression of the latch bolt. The head of the clogging bai' of the prior structure was provided with a linger which, when the bar was in clogging position, was disposed in aligned slots in the outer knob spindle and in the stationary 'knob spindle bearing and prevented rotation of said outer knob spindle, lt wasfound, through extensive use of the prior door lock, that depression of the pushbutton required an excessive amount of force ysince the clogging bar was required to urge the retractor rearwardly against the relatively heavy retractor springs. more, if the clogging bar had been inadvertently moved into clogging position when the door was open, and the :er knob was turned while the door was being closed, the dogging finger on the clogging bar would be pinched between the stationary bearing and the outer spindle and the clogging bar would not be released as the door was closed, thereby preventing operation of the outer knob and re-entry into the room.
The primary object of the present invention, therefore, is the provision of improved clogging means for a cylindrical door latch operating unit which are insertable into the unit through the inner spindle thereof and which re quite the use of very little force to be moved into clogging position.
.A further object of this invention is to provide such novel clogging means which include a blocking element that positively prevents re-engagement of the retractor position, such as when the door is closed and the latch bolt is depressed. Y
The primary objects of this invention are attained by providing a dogging bar which is cammed into clogging position as in the prior structure, but which carries .a latching bar that is under light spring pressure and is depressed against the retractor relatively to the clogging bar against said light spring pressure during movement of the bar towards dogging position, thereby eliminating the necessity of moving the retractor against the relatively heavy retractor springs, and which is provided with abutment means that are moved into engagement with 'the retractor to hold the dogging bar in clogging position.
In addition, said latching bar is provided with a blocking element which prevents re-engagement of the retractor with the abutment thereon once said retractor has been moved out of engagement therewith.

Referring to the drawings wherein the operating unit of the cylindrical door lock is shown, it will be noted that said operating unit includes a casing, generally indicated at 5, which houses and supports the latch operating mechanism and includes an inner end plate 6 and an outer end plate '7 having integral tubular sleeves d and 9 extending, respectively, therefrom; the end portion of each of said sleeves being of a reduced diameter. A U-shaped retractor guide is secured between the end plates 6 and and has spaced parallel arms itil-ld which extend transversely across the casing 5 equidistant from the longitudinal axis of the operating unit.
A retractor il is slidably supported between the arms of said retractor guide and is preferably constructed from a single piece of sheet metal. Said retractor includes an inner side 12 from which are bent spaced parallel legs 33 l3. The rear lportion of each of said legs has an extension 14 thereon and said extensions are bent over, parallel to the inner side l2, to form the outer 4side of the retractor. The inner side l2 of the retractor is also pro vided with extensions which arel bent perpendicularly thereto and extend across the retractor intermediate its ends to provide rollback platforms S-S thereon. The edges of the extensions 1A-ld, which form the outer side of the retractor, and the edges of the rollback platforms -15 are spaced apart a distance equal to the width of a `slot 16 extendingrinto the inner side 12 of the retractor to provide a transverse opening therethrough. Thefouter ends of the retractor legs 13-13 are bent to provide` the conventional oppositely disposed fingers The retractor guide carries a spring seat 18 which supports :a pair of compression springs 19'-19 -whose free ends are disposed between the inner and the outer sides of the retractor and engage ears that projectfromV l The Vinner sleeve 8 and the outer sleeve 9 contain simi-V larV bearing members 2l and 22, respectively, whichare prevented from rotating therein by Vmeans of tabs 23 and 24'V which are bent inwardly from said sleevesY and project into slots 25 'and 276 extending'the entireV length of saidbearings.` The formation of the tabs 23 and 24 results in the provision of slots 27 Vand 23 in the inner and the outer sleeves, respectively, which areV disposed in alignment with the slots 25 and 26 in the bearings 2l and 22. Movement Vof each of said bearings longitudinally of its respective sleeve is prevented by means` of o lingers 29 and 30 which` are bent inwardly into notches formed in the edgesV of the bearings.
Inner and outer tubular spindles 31 and 32 are rotatably supported by the bearings in the inner and the outer 'Y sleeves, and said spindles have segmental portionsV 33 and 34'projecting therefrom Vinto the casing 5. The opposite edges of said segmental yportions are bentV outwardly to provide rollbacks thereon-.which engagek the rollback platforms 15-15 of the retractor to both limit the outward movement thereof by the springs 19-19 and to cause rearward movement thereof when either of theV spindlesY is rotated. The free end of each` of said segmental portions 33 Aand 34 is upwardly inclined to provide abutments 35 and 36 between said rollbacks for a purpose to be hereinafter more fully described. VThe spindles 31 and 32 containlongitudinally extending slots 37 and 38 which are normally disposed in alignment with the slotsV inthe bearing membersand inthe sleeves, as illustrated in Figs, l and 3, and said spindles are rotatably retained within the operating unit by annular thrust washers 39 and 4t) as fully disclosed in United States Patent No. 2,75l,244,"dat`ed lune l9, 1956. l Y
The inner spindle 31 carries an inner knob 41 and the outerV spindle 32 carries kan outer knob 42; saidknobs having tubular Shanks which'teles'copically lreceive said spindles and enter the reduced end portions of said sleeves to provide a bearing for the outer ends of the spindles. Each'of theknobs is retained on itsY spindle by a knob retainerV 43 of the type fully disclosed in United States Patent No. 2,739,006, dated March 20, 1956'.- The knob retainer in each of said spindles'is retained therein by means of an ear 44 which is bent inwardly into the spindle, Yand said retainer is urged to retaining postionby a suitable spring member `45 that is secured within the spindle. The present invention is embodied particularly in novel dogging means for theY operating unit above described which are selectively operable to prevent rotation of the d f outcr spindle 32, and consequently the outer knob 42,
to thereby render the lock of the door.
The said clogging means is in the form of a clogging unit which, in the embodiment of the invention illustrated, is insertable into the inner spindle 31 of the operating unit and includes a flat clogging bar 50 which extends longitudinally through the spindle and has a inoperable from the outer side head portion 5l normally disposed in the position illustrated in Fig. l. The outer ends of the dogging bar and the latching bar are maintained in alignment by a disk 74 which is contained within the pushbutton against the wall of the spring support and has a rectangular slot 75 therein through which the said bars extend. The wall of the spring support and the adjacent `disk 74, which form the inner end wall of the pushbutton, are contained between the inner edges of the notches 55 and 66 and the ends of the at spring 67, which is wider than said bars and the slot '75, to thereby secure the push-- button to said bars. However, said pushbutton is free to rotate relatively to the bars with the inner knob.
Said dogging unit also includes a cup-shaped spring support 76 which is contained within the inner spindle and is disposed against the ear 44 which is bent inwardly therefrom to prevent detachment of the knob retainer 43. Said support 76 has a circular opening through its wall portion through which the dogging bar and the latching bar extend and is provided with a notch in its periphery to accommodate the structure in the spindle that Secures the knob retainer spring 45 therein. The inner ends of the (logging bar and the latching bar are tained in proper alignment by a disk 77, similar to the disk 74, having a rectangular slot 7S therethrough through which said bars extend. The disk 77 is disposed adjacent the spring support 76 and is cut away to prevent interference thereof with the ear 4d against which the spring support rests.
A compression spring Sil is disposed between the spring support 76 in the inner spindle and the spring support 7l in the pushbutton and urges the pushbutton and the dogging bar and latching bar into their normal undogging positions as illustrated in Fig. l.

The head of the latching bar is, however, prevented from moving rearwardly with the dogging bar due to the Vengagement of its edge with the edge of the slot le in the retractor. The .flogging bar therefore pivots toward the latching bar about the projection 57, as shown in Fig. 8, and the outer end oi the dogging bar moves away from the outer end of the latching bar against the force of the spring 67. Since the bars are pivoted near their outer ends, it requires very little force to move the inner ends of the bars together and depression of the pushbutton requires very little effort.
`When the bars reach dogning position, as illustrated in Fig. 9, the notch 61 cornes into alignment with the edge of the slot 16 in the retractor and the spring 67 then urges the latching bar about its pivot and into its normal d position to bringthe sides of said notch el over the edge of the slot le in the retractor to thereby prevent movement of the dogging bar into undogging position by the spring Si?. During movement of the dogging bar and latching bar into clogging position, it will be noted that the retractor is at all times retained in normal projected position by the retractor springs 19-19 which are of sucient strength to resist the force exerted by the spring 67 on the latching bar 56.
Referring noW to Fig. 9 wherein the clogging bar is illustrated in dogging position, it will be Yunderstood that rotation of the inner knob or depression of the latch bolt upon closing of the door will urge the retractor rearwardly to thereby disengage the edge of the slot lo from the notch all in the latching bar to permit movement of the b s the pushbuton to normal undogging position under the force of the spring As the dogging bar and the latching bar move outwardly towards undogging position after being released by the retractor, they are urged forwardly by the retractor, as it returns toward normal position, through the engagement of the edge of the slot i6 with the rear edge of the head on the latching bar. t will be noted that upon retraction of the retractor, as above described, the latching bar is prevented from following the reti-actor due to the engagement of the head portion thereof with the projection il extending inwardly from the clogging ringer.
As the latchino bar and clogging bar approach dogging position, as illustrated in Fig. 9, the end til-z of the sprinf7 Sl will engage the inner side of the retractor and will be depressed while the latching bar moves inwardly relatively thereto into latching position. When the retractor returns to normal position upon entry of the latch bolt into the opening in the strike, the edge of the slot 3.6 will engage the end of the spring and pivot me latching bar toward the clogging bar against the spring 67. When the outer knob is released and the dogging nger is thereby freed, the spring will then immediately return the dogging bar and the latching btu to their normal undogging positions.

A door lock including a retractor, a latch bolt connected to said retractor, means for retracting said retractor to withdraw said latch VIbolt, dogging means for preventing operation of said retracting means, latching means carried by said clogging means engageable with said retractor for retaining the dogging means in dogging position, and blocking means on said latchng means normally in a position preventing engagement of said latching means with said retractor; said blocking means being movable to ind arable position upon movement of the tion,a blocking spring associated with said clogging means and having a-portion normally disposed in a positionV preventing engagement of said latching means with said retractor; said portion being engageable with sair retractor upon movement of the dogging means into clogging position and movable to a retracted position to permit engagement of said latching means with the retractor; said 'blocking spring -being operable toproject said portion into blocking position upon depression of said retractor to prevent re-engagement of said retractor with saidrlatching means.

In a door lock, a retractor for a latch bolt movable transversely of the lock between projected and retracted positions and having an opening extending transversely therethrough providing an edge portion on the inner side of said retractor, inner and outer independently rotatable spindles each having rollback means thereon for actuating said retractor, said outer spindle having a slot therein normally aligned with the opening in said retractor and with a slot in a stationary portion of said lock, an abutment in said inner spindle, a dogging bar contained within said inner spindle Vand having a rearwardly extending dogging finger on its inner end portion normally disposed in said opening and a cam surface aligned with said abutment, a latching bar pivotally connected to said dogging bar and having a free inner end extending into the opening in said retractor adjacent said edge portion, spring means acting upon said bars and urging the inner end of said latching bar toward said edge portion, a pushbutton connected to the outer end of said dogging bar and adapted upon depression to move said dogging bar and said latching bar inwardly in said inner spindle to cause engagement of said cam surface with said abutment whereupon said dogging bar is cammed rearwardly relatively to said lock and toward said latching bar against the force of said spring and into dogging position wherein said dogging finger is disposed in said slots thereby preventing rotation of said outer spindle, said latching bar having a latching abutment on its inner end portion and being movable by said spring to cause latching engagement of said latching abutment with the edge portion of said retractor to thereby retain the dogging bar in dogging position, and separate spring means for returning said dogging bar and said latching bar to undogging position upon movement of said retractor to retracted position and disengagement of said edge portion from said latching abutment.

In a door lock, a retractor for a latch bolt movable transversely of the lock between projected and retracted position and having an opening extending transversely therethrough providing an edge portion on the inner side of said retractor, inner and outer independently rotatable spindles each having rollback means thereon for actuating said retractor, said outer spindle having a slot therein normally aligned with the opening in said retractor and with a slot in a stationary portion of said lock, an abutment in said inner spindle, a dogging bar contained within said inner spindle and having a rearwardly extending dogging finger on its inner end portion normally disposed in said opening and a cam surface aligned with said abutment, said dogging finger having a stop portion thereon extending toward the outer end of the dogging bar, a latching bar disposed rearwardly of said dogging bar in edge-to-edge relationship therewith, a projection extending from said latching bar intermediate its ends into a recess in the adjacent edge of said dogging bar whereby said bars are arranged for relative pivotal movement, the inner end portion of said latching bar extending into the opening in said retractor adjacent to said edge portion and under said stop portion, a spring member acting upon the outer ends of said bars and biasing the inner end of the latching bar toward said edge portion and into engagement with said stop portion, said spring member also retaining said projection in said recess, a hollow pushbutton secured to the outer ends of said bars and containing said spring, said pushbutton being depressible to move said bars inwardly in said inner spindle to cause engagement of said cam surface with said abutment whereupon said dogging bar is cammed rearwardly relatively to said lock and toward said latching bar against the force of said spring and into dogging position wherein said dogging finger is disposed in said slots thereby preventing rotation of said outer spindle, said latching bar having a latching abutment on its inner end portion and being movable by said spring to cause latching engagement of said latching abutment with the edge portion of said retractor to thereby retain the dogging bar in dogging position, and separate spring means for returning said dogging bar and said latching bar to undogging position upon movement of said retractor to retracted position and disengagement of said edge portion from said latching abutment; said stop member preventing movement of said latching bar with said retractor.
l0. ln a door lock, a retractor for a latch bolt having an opening extending transversely therethrough providing an edge portion on the inner side of said retractor, a dogging unit movable through said opening transversely of said retractor between an outward undogging and an inward dogging position, said dogging unit including a dogging bar and a latching bar, said latching bar being movably Imounted on said dogging bar and having an inner free end portion extending into the opening in said retractor adjacent said edge portion thereof, said latching bar having its inner free end resiliently biased away from said dogging bar and toward said edge portion, a latching abutment on the inner end portion of said latching bar adapted to engage said edge portion and disposed outwardly thereof when the dogging unit is in undogging position, a pushbutton attached to the outer end of said dogging unit and adapted, upon depression thereof, to shift said dogging unit inwardly into dogging position, the bias of the free end of said latching bar then urging said latching abutment into engagement with said edge portion whereby said dogging unit is held in dogging position, stop means on one of said bars limiting movement of the inner end of the latching bar and preventing the inner end portion of said latching bar from following said edge portion of the retractor when said retractor moves toward retracted position, and spring means for shifting said dogging unit into undogging position upon retraction of said retractor and disengagement of said edge portion from said latching abutment.

In a door lock, a retractor for a latch bolt having an opening extending transversely therethrough providing an edge portion on the inner side of said retractor, a dogging unit movable through said opening transversely of said retractor between an outward undogging and an inward dogging position, said dogging unit including a dogging bai' and a latching bar, said latching bar being pivotally mounted on said dogging bar and having an inner free end portion extending into the opening in said retractor adjacent said edge portion thereof, spring means acting upon said bars and biasing said inner end portion of the latching bar away from said dogging bar and toward saidnedge portion, a latching abutment on the inner end portion of said latching bar adapted to engage said edge portion and disposed outwardly thereof when the dogging unit is in undogging position, a pushbutton attached to the outer end of said dogging unit and adapted, upon depression thereof, to shift said dogging unit inwardly into dogging position, said Spring means then urging said latching bar about its pivot to move said latching abutment into engagement with said edge portion whereby said dogging unit is held in dogging position, stop means on said dogging bar limiting movement of said latching bar and preventing its free end from following said edge portion when said retractor moves toward retracted position, and separate spring means for shifting said dogging unit to undogging position upon retraction of said retractor and disengagement of said edge portion from said latching abutment.
