United States Patent O `2,838,029 DISTRIBUTOR GovnRNon SHAFT ASSEMBLY Eugene C. Bettoni, Birmingham, Mich., assignor to Holley Carburetor Company, Van Dyke, Mich., a corporation of Michigan Application June 13, 1956, Serial No. 591,168
6 Claims. (Cl. 121-43) The present invention relates to a distributor governor shaft assembly.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a rotatable shaft construction which forms two separate passages along the length of the rotating shaft so that two variable pressure sources may be connected to separate operating devices.
More specifically, it is an object of the present invention to provide a shaft as described, formed of two sections which may be readily machined and assembled together to provide the plurality of passages referred to.
It is a feature of the present invention to provide a lirst shaft section having a fluid passage extending axially into one end thereof, a second shaft section having a recess in which the end portion of the first shaft section is received, Said recess affording a fluid passage extending along the side of the end portion of the first shaft section, a transverse opening extending through overlapped portions of said first and second shaft sections and communicating with the passage in said first shaft section, and a tube located in and closing said transverse opening, said tube having a port in the side thereof registering with the passage in said iirst shaft section at the side of the tube remote from the end of said lirst shaft section.
Other objects and features of the invention will become apparent as the description proceeds, especially when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure l is a fragmentary sectional view through a distributor having a governor control valve therein, showing the governor valve.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional view similar to Figure l showing the distributor adjusting mechanism.
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view of the shaft assembly.
Figure 4 is a section on the line 4 4, Figure 3.
The shaft assembly which forms the subject matter of the present invention is indicated at and is adapted to be geared or otherwise connected to the cam shaft of an linternal combustion engine. ln Figure l the shaft 10 is diagrammatically illustrated as connected by gearing 10a to an engine cam shaft 10b. The upper end of the shaft 10 is received in the distributor housing 12 and is connected to the usual distributor arm indicated at 14. Carried by the upper end of the shaft 10 for rotation therewith and for small angular adjustment relative thereto is cam mechanism indicated generally at 16 adapted to operate the breaker indicated generally at 18.
Angular adjustment of the cam 16 relative to the shaft 10 is effected by means responsive jointly to engine speed,
as indicated by centrifugal force developed in iiy weights 20 and manifold vacuum as effective on exible diaphragm means indicated at 22. Details of this mechanism forms no part of the present invention and arey referred to merely to explain the necessity for passage means indicated at 24 in this figure, which is separate and distinct from other passage means also extending longitudinally of the shaft 10'. The portion of the pas- 2,838,029 liatented June 10, 1958 lee sage shown at 24 communicates by means subsequently to be described, with a fitting 25 which may connect to a source of manifold vacuum.
Governor means for limiting the speed of the vehicle controlled thereby may be provided in the form of a uid motor connected tothe engine throttle valve and adapted to be operated by a differential pressure source, such for example as carburetor vacuum. In accordance with the present invention the fluid motor has passage means including a connection or fitting 26 controlied by a bleed valve including ports 28 which are adapted to be closed by a fly weight Sti when the engine attains sufficient speed to cause the centrifugal force of the ily Weight to overcome the adjustable spring 32. It will be observed that the ports 2S communicate with a passage 34 extending longitudinally of the transfer tube or shaft 36' the outer endV of which is closed by a plug 38. Weight Sii is tubular, and slides on tube 36 under centrifugal forces opposed by spring 32 to overlie and close ports Z8.
Referring now to Figures 3 and 4 it will be observed that the shaft assembly indicated generally at lii comprises.
a first shaft section 40 having an end portion reduced as indicated at 42' to provide a seat for the end portion 44 of the second shaft section 46. Beyond the reduced` portion 42j, the first shaft section 4d is further reduced. as indicated at 48. Beyond the reduced portion 48 the end of the shaft section is again enlarged as indicated. at Sti. Extending along one side, the enlargement Sti isy cut away to provide the passage forming relief or flati surface indicated at 52. Extending into the end of the. first shaft section 4d is a centrally located axially extend-- the bottom of the recess as indicated at 60 being of.- slightly smaller diameter to snugly receive the enlarge-- ment 5t? at the end of the first shaft section 40. Adjacent the lower end of the second shaft section, as seen in Figure 3, there is provided a transverse passage 62 extending to the side of the second shaft section. It will be observed that the bottom of the recess S3 is tapered as indicated at 64, thus leaving a small chamber at the end of the first shaft section. Extending axially beyond the bottom of the recess SS is a second uid passage 66 which in turn communicates with a transversely extending through opening 68.
It will be observed that the various passages and reduced and enlarged portions so far described may be formed eiiiciently and economically when the shaft sections 40 and 46 are separated. Thereafter, the parts are assembled together in the position shown and brazed, as
for example at 7) and 72. With the parts lbrazed in the position shown in Figure 3, a through transverse opening 74 may be drilled communicating with the elongated fluid passage 54. The opening 74, fas best seen in Figure l, is adapted to be closed by the tubular transfer shaft 36 which serves to separate the portion of the tiuid passage 54 therebelow from the liuid passage 66. It will be observed that the tubular shaft 36 includes a port 76. With the parts as just described, it will be observed that the transverse passage 56 communicates with the axially extending fluid passage 54 which in turn communicates with the interior of the tubular Shaft 36 through the port 76. At the same time the transverse passage 62 communicates with an annular chamber formed by the reduced portion 43 of the shaft section 40 within the recess 58, thence through the passage formed by the flattened portion 52 into the chamber between the end of the iirst shaft section and the tapered wall 64, and thence through *t Kat. the passage 66 into the transverse opening 68, which includes a ported tube 8f! as seen in Figure 2.
Referring again to Figure l, it will be observed that the transverse passage 56 is in constant communication during shaft rot-ation with an annular chamber 82 con'- nccted by the inclined passage 84 with the fitting 26. la like manner, the transverse passage 62 is in constant communication during rotation of the shaft with the annular chamber S6 which communicates through inclined passage d8 with the fitting 25.
The drawings and the foregoing specification constitute a description of the improved distributor governor shaft assembly in such full, clear, concise and exact terms as to enable any person skilled in the art to practice the invention, the scope of which is indicated by the appended claims.
