UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEo EAET, 0E GREENVILLE, 4nEw JEEsEY. y
ELECTRIC LOCOM'OTIVE.
SPECIFICATION formingv part of Letters Patent Application led June 14, 1983.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEO DAET, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of Greenville, New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Electric Locomotives, of which the following is a full, true, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improved construction of the. track, and to an improved means of driving electric locomotive-engines at high speeds, and is especially adapted to elevated electric railroads in cities and airlines between cities, but in certain cases may be used for ordinary land-lines.
My invention consists in the combination of a dynamo having an armature of large diameter with a driving-wheel of smaller diameter, whereby an increased traction is obtained without the use of gearing or 'similar contrivances i'orl reducing the motion of the armature in proportion to the motion of the wheel; and it consists, likewise, in combining with an armature so constructed a track having a depression between the rails, allowing of the passage of said armature between them. This construction is necessary, because the armature, being of greater diameter than the wheels, must project below the upper surface ofthe track.
My invention will be readily understood from the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l represents a general elevation of my locomotive-engine; Fig. 2, a sectional view of No. 283,761, dated August 28, 1883.
(No model.)
the armature and driving-wheel; Fig. 3, aplan view of the electric motor; and Fig. 4, a car adapted to run upon the rails, which are likewise shown in section beneath it.
A represents, generally, the frame of the locomotive, upon which the moving parts are supported.
B represents the armature, which is made.
of larger diameter than the driving-Wheel C.
D represents the usual running wheels, upon which the engine is supported.
As shown in Fig. 2, the armature traverses the space E between the elevated rails F F. The currents operating throu gh the motor may be controlled in any well-known Way.
lt is obvious that by this improvement two results are accomplished-in the first place, that the traction power is multiplied upon the driving-Wheels, and, in the second place, the center of gravity of the locomotive is brought much lower than can be true of the ordinary construction.
/hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the smaller drivingwheel, C, the armature B, greater in diameter than the driving-wheel C, and the tracks F, having an open space between them, allowing of the traverse of said armature, substantially as described.
LEO DAFT.
