This invention relates to dual opening display cartons, and more particularly to ing an attached cover or lid susceptible of being opened from either of its longitudinal margins for diversified display purposes.
A primary object of the present invention is to provide a dual opening display carton which can be set up from a one-piece blank and which has an integral cover or lid assemblage susceptible of being swung to open position from either of its longitudinal margins to vary the display of the contents of the carton, as well as to afford varying greeting or advertising displays on the inner face of the opened lid and over portions of the carton proper.
The present dual opening display carton is intended to provide an attractive and novel type of container which can be used for special occasions, as for sales events or for holiday merchandise. When the cover or lid of the carton is swung to open position along one of its longitudinal margins a certain portion of the carton and the goods therein will be visible with the remaining face of the carton covered by desired advertising indicia or pictorial or greeting. representations. Reversely, when the cover or lid is opened along its other longitudinal margin the first-mentioned interior portion of the carton and its contents will becovered by a display indicia panel, exposing the other interior portions of the carton and the goods therein with the display of a different advertising or greeting panel on the inner surface of the carton lid. A further, more specific object of the present invention is to providea dual opening display carton which can be die cut from a one-piece blank of paperboard or-the like and scored for folding to render it susceptible of being easily set up, the latter requiring a simple stapling, gluing or fastening operation in respect to the end portion of one flap, permitting the blank as thus arranged to be shipped in a partially folded, fiat, compact condition. ,1 A further object of the invention is to provide a dual opening display carton which can be easily set up by the user and which will provide a sleeve to house and cover a rigid box insert or which can be used as a liner and cover for a preformed rigid outer boX.

Fig. 12 is a cross-sectional view of the latter form of the invention.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings it will be observed from Fig. 1 that the improved dual opening display carton is folded or arranged from a one-piece blank which can be die cut, stamped from paperboard or other suitable material. The blank includes a rectangular bottom forming section 15 having foldably secured to opposite longitudinal margins thereof side wall sections 16 and 17, lines 18 between the inner margins of the side wall sectio- ns 16 and 17 and the bottom section 15. The outer edge of the side wall section 16 has secured thereto, by 'a fold line 19, a narrow covering and display panel 20. Foldably carried by the outer end portion of the panel 20 is a securing flap 21 partially set up, is folded against and secured to the undersurface of a cover or lid section 22. For that purpose a surface of the securing flap 21 may be gummed or it may ultimately be stapled or otherwise secured to the undersurface of the cover or lid section 22 adjacent a margin of the latter. Projecting outwardly from intermediate portions of the side'ma-rgins of the cover section :22 are small tabs 23 which are merely for the purpose of facilitating manual swinging of the cover section from either margin when the carton is set up. Connected by fold lines 24 to opposite end portions of the inner margin of the cover section 22 are the end portions of hinge strips 25. The opposite ends of the hinge strips 25 are connected by fold lines 26 with the lower margin of the swing through said space 27 during certain types of.
manipulation of the, cover of the set-up display carton.
Fig. 2 illustrates one wayin which he blank of Fig. .l
the cover partially or otherwise formed there being scored fold which, when the display carton is may have portions folded upon itself compactly for shipment and storage and from which condition the user can easily set up the carton. In the folded arrangement of'Fig. 2 the bottom forming section 15 has the side wall section 16 out-stretched and in the plane of the bottom 15 but the covering and display panel 20 is folded over onto the top surface of the bottom section 15. The side wall section 17 is likewise folded over onto the top surface of the bottom section 15 with the hinge strips 25 extended in the same plane over the bottom 15 and on opposite sides of the panel 20. The cover 22 is folded back over the hinge strips 25 and panel 20.
Toset up the carton into its sleeve-like form the procedure illustrated in Fig. 3 is accomplished. The side wall sections 16 and 17 are extended vertically relative to the- "bottom section 15 and the cover or lid section 22 is raised sufliciently to expose the opening 27 between the hinge strips 25. Then the outer end portion of the covering-and display panel 20 is passed through the opening 27 so as to underlie the intermediate area of the undersur-face of the cover or lid section 22 and the securing flap 21 is then glued or otherwise secured to the cover or lid section 22 adjacent the margin which overlies the top edge of the side wall section 17 when the cover section is closed. After the walls and flaps and sections are folded as shown in Fig. 3 the securement of the free end of the covering and display panel 20 to the lid 22 is the only assembly operation required and with the carton thus set up in the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. l-lO inclusive it is intended that the set-up carton form a sleeve for enclosing a relatively rigid fivesided open rectangular box or tray 28. The tray 28 is then disposed within the set up carton in the manner shown in Fig. 4 and it may be compartmental or otherwise.
The carton is especially suited for containing an assortment of merchandise and the mid-portion of the tray 28 may have disposed therein some goods or merchandise different from the goods or merchandise in the tray on opposite sides of the mid-section, with the result that.
the merchandise in the mid-section may be displayed as a premium or bonus. When the cover or lid section 22 isswung to open position along the hinge or fold lines 24 which connect it to the hinge strips 25, the latter will remain in horizontal position covering the sections of the tray 18 on opposite sides of the mid-section and displaying onlyv the merchandise in the mid-section of the tray. Consequently, the then exposed faces of the hinge strips 25 may carry advertising indicia or greeting material. It will also be observed that this type of opening of the cover 22 depicted in Figs. 4 and will cause the covering and display panel to swing upwardly outwardly on the hinge line 19 with the cover or lid section to which it is attached at one end, with the result that the inner face of the display panel 20 will be exposed and may carry advertising indicia or a greeting or suitable decorative material.
The reverse or alternate manner of opening the lid for the improved display carton is shown in Fig. 8. In this event the cover or lid, in opening, carries with it the hinge strips 25 so that they overlie the end portions of the inner surface of the lid section and swing on the hinge lines 26 which connect the hinge strips 25 to the side wall section 17. The covering and display panel 20, whose then forward edge is secured to the side wall section 16 by the fold line 19, is connected at its other end to the medial portion of. whatis then the inner edge ofthe lidsection 22 and therefore remains inhorizontal position overthe medial section of' the tray 28 completely covering the goods or commodity therein. but exposing.
the goods or commodities in the end sections of the. tray.
The face of the covering-and display panel 20 which is exposediin the condition of-Fig. 8' may carry suitable advertising or. greeting-indicia and the same is true ofthe exposed innersurface portion. of the lid 5 section 22" between the hinge strips 25, which becomes exposed. Thus, as between the opening arrangements of Figs. 5 and 8 different portions of the open tray 28 are exposed and different portions are covered. In each event the coverings therefor may carry different indicia and the same is true in each event with respect to the exposed portions of the inner surface of the lid section or the panel 20. By opening the covering and display panel from either margin a unique type of display container is provided which varies the visual effect and varies the advertising and housed commodity display.
A slightly modified form of the invention is illustrated in Figs. 11 and 12, wherein the display carton elements may be directly associated with the walls of a rigid box and with its disconnected cover, in lieu of serving as a complete sleeve for a tray. The rigid five-sided box whose walls have the improved carton elements associated therewith is indicated generally by the numeral 29, and the separated rigid cover is indicated by the numeral 30. Hinge strips 25' have one pair of ends hingedly or foldably secured to a vertical side wall of the rigid box as at 31 (see Fig. 12), and the other ends of said hinge strips 25 are hingedly or foldably connected, as at 32, with an inner lining sheet 33 for the rigid cover. The numeral 20' (see Fig. 11) designates the covering and display panel which, depending upon the manner in which the lid 30 is opened, is adapted to cover either the central compartment of the box 29 orthe mid section of the cover facing 33. It is, therefore, secured at one end to the cover facing adjacent one longitudinal margin of the cover, as at 34, and is secured at its other end to a side wall section of the box or liner as at 35. If the box is opened by lifting the rigid lid 30 from one margin, the hinging movement will be along the hinge connections 31 between the hinge strips 25 and the upper edge of the adjacent side wall section of the box 29 and the hinge strips will, in thismode of opening, overlie the end portions of 'the inner facing sheet 33 of the lid. The then exposed portions of the hinge strips may carry pictorial representations or advertising indicia, as may the exposed mid section of the cover lining sheet 33. In this form of opening the covering and display panel 20' will remain in horizontal position over the middle compartment or section of the box 29 covering the contents thereof and the then top surface of the panel 20' may carry suitable indicia.
In the alternate mode of opening the cover from the other margin, the margin of the cover will hinge during its movement upwardly on the connections 32 with the ends of the hinge strips 25' which in this event will remain in horizontal position covering the end sections of the box, but the covering and display panel 20 will hinge npwardly'with and remain against the cover when it is opened and will expose the mid section of the box. If desired, the interior of the box or liner may have compartment-defining walls 36 therein, but this is merely optional.
From the'foregoing description it will be seen that the present invention provides a very simple, unique and attractive dual opening display carton which is easily set up from a one-piece blank. The closure lid or cover for the carton or box can be opened from either of its longitudinal margins and each mode of opening varies the display ofthe contents of the carton and also gives varied forms of advertising or greeting displays on various panels and hinge strips which are differently exposed in the alternate mode of manipulating the carton lid. The improved dual opening display carton is inexpensive to manufacture, can be shipped in very flat, compact form, affords a unique type of package and display for poses described.
