1 Claim. or. 72-93 This invention relates to concrete window units which include means for attaching shutters thereto, an important object of the invention being to provide vertically swinging window shutters mounted on window frames, together with means for manually effecting operation of the shutters to move the shutters to their open or closed positions, as desired.
An important object of the invention is to provide a shutter of this character especially designed for use with concrete buildings, wherein the window frames are of pre-formed concrete construction, the shutters being operated from within the building equipped with the shutters.
A further object of the invention is to provide a shutter and shutter operator which includes means for holding the shutter operator in its positions of adjustment when it is desired to swing the shutters outwardly.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a seal between the shutters and concrete window frames with which the shutters are connected and at the same time provide a sealing means which will not interfere with the operation of the shutters while being moved to their open or closed positions.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts Without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a rear elevational view illustrating a window frame constructed in accordance with the invention and equipped with shutters constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view partly broken away, illustrating a window frame equipped with shutters constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 4 is a fragmental perspective View illustrating the pivot end of a shutter.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on line 55 of Fig. l, a shutter being shown in an extended position.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the window frame indicated generally by the reference character 5, is of preformed concrete construction and as shown, is provided with external recesses 6 formed around its outer surface, which external recesses provide pockets for cement or concrete used in cementing the window frame in a window opening of a building.
Recesses 7 are also provided constituting a pocket for the reception of the plaster used in finishing the wall of the building with which the window frames of this character are used.
In the construction of the window frame, spaced locking plates 8 are provided and embedded in the center post 9 of the window frame, the locking plates having lines of aligning openings 10, which are disposed opposite to openings formed in the center post 9, as clearly shown by Fig. 6 of the drawings, the openings being designed to accommodate the securing bolt 11, for purposes to be hereinafter more fully described.
The window frame also includes a center transverse bar 12, which transverse bar 12 provides a shutter with the sill and stiles of the window frame for supporting the lower portions of the screen sections 13, the lower edges of the screen sections 13 being held in place by the pins 14 which have their heads embedded in the concrete material of which the window frame is constructed, the
pointed ends of the pins passing through the mesh of the screen sections, as clearly shown by the drawings.
The upper ends of the screen sections 13 are held in place by means of the vertically adjustable bars 15 to.
which the screen sections are secured by means of pins seen that by adjusting the bolts 17, the bars 15 may be adjusted to tighten or loosen the screen section 13.
The shutters which form the important feature of the present invention comprise frames 19 which are rectangular in formation and of a size to closely fit within the window frames, with which they are used.
Each frame 19 includes an upper bar 20 and a lower bar 21, to which bars are secured sheets of transparent plastic material, such as cello glass 19'.
Secured to opposite ends of the upper bar 20 of each frame 19, is a hinge member 23.' As better shown by Fig. 4 of the drawings, each hinge member embodies an arm having a right-angled end 24 fitted over one edge of the frame with which it is used, where it is secured by means of screws 25. One end of each hinge member 23 extends beyond the other edge of the frame to which it is secured, where it is provided with an opening to receive the hinge pin 26 secured Within the window frame 5. Thus it will be seen that due to this construction the frames 10 may be readily swung to an outward position, or swung inwardly to close the window frame and act as a shutter.
The upper edge of the upper bar 20 of each frame 19 is beveled at 27, and this beveled surface is provided with a groove extending longitudinally thereof, which groove accommodates the edge 28 of the weather stripping 29, which is shown as round in cross section and constructed of heavy fabric weather stripping, the weather stripping being so arranged that when the shutter is swung to its closed position, the weather stripping will engage the window frame to provide a seal between the shutters and window frame.
As shown by the drawings, the inner side bars 30 of the frames 19 are provided with elongated openings 30 in which the pins 31 of the shutter operating arms 32 operate, each shutter operating arm having a disc portion Patented May 13, 1958.

From the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described I have provided a window frame construction of pro-formed concrete material to which vertically swinging shutters are connected, the shutters being so constructed and arranged that by operating the shutter operating arms from the inside of the building, the shutters may be swung toeither their open or closed positions and secured in'such positions.
Should'it be desired to remove the screens to service the shutters it is'only necessary to' loosen the bolts 17, whereupon the screens may be removed from their securing pins and free access to the shutters'rnay be had.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed A concrete window construction comprising a frame including concrete stiles, an upper concrete member connecting the upper ends of said stiles, a concrete sill connecting the stiles at their lower ends, a main concrete post disposed'centrally of the window frame, vertically 4 swinging shutters arranged side by side pivotally mounted within thefra'mea't opopsite'sides of said main concrete post, locking means embodying apertured spaced plates integrally embedded within said post, said plates extending to points flush with one edge of said central post, a disk rotatably mounted between said plates and having spaced radially disposed openings therein a shutter operating arm extending from said'disk between said spaced plates, means for pivotally connecting the operating arm to said shutters effecting vertical swinging movement of said shutters, bolt means extending through the apertures in said plates and engageable in a selected one of said openings.
