3 Claims. (Cl. 155-78) The purpose of this invention is to provide a positive seat for use by linemen working on poles so that the necessity of linemen supporting themselves on spurs and with a body belt is obviated.
In numerous instances it is necessary for a lineman working on wires at the top of a pole to remain on the pole for hours at a time and the conventional spurs and body belts become very uncomfortable after even short periods of time. Furthermore it is frequently necessary to draw tools, wires and the like by cords from the ground and where the lineman is supported by a belt or strap and spurs it is sometimes difficult to have both hands free for operating the cord.
With these thoughs in mind this invention contemplates a seat and means for rigidly supporting the seat on a pole whereby the seat is adapted to be readily installed on a pole and also readily removed or changed to a different position by a lineman suspended in position on the pole by spurs and the like.
The object of this invention is, therefore. to provide a seat for use on a pole wherein the seat is collapsible and whereby the seat is adapted to be readily set up for use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a portable seat for use by linemen on poles in which the seat is adapted to be positively secured in position on a pole.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a portable seat for use on a pole wherein the seat is adapted to be set up and installed by a single operator.
A further object of the invention is to provide a seat for use by linemen on a pole in which means is provided for bracing the seat from a point below the point where the seat is secured to the pole.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a portable seat for use by linemen on a pole which relieves both hands of the linemen so that both hands may be used for operations on the pole.
And a still further object is to provide a collapsible seat adapted to be readily set up and used by linemen on a pole in which the seat is of a simple and economical construction. I
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies a seat having a tongue extended therefrom with pole gripping jaws swingably mounted at the sides of the tongue, with toggle acting latching elements for locking the jaws in engagement with a pole, and with a diagonally disposed brace having a pointed lower end pivotally connected to the seat and adapted to be positioned with the point extended into a pole whereby atent "ice the brace coacts with the jaws for suspending the seat in a horizontal position at one side of the pole.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a plan view of the improved linemans portable pole seat with part of a spring cylinder thereof broken away and parts shown in section, and illustrating the use of the device with the jaws thereof gripping a pole, the pole being shown in section.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the seat also showing the seat suspended from a pole.
Figure 3 is a view showing a diagonally disposed brace for supporting the seat in an extended position, looking upwardly toward the under side of the brace, and showing the parts on an enlarged scale and with parts broken away.
While one embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the above referred to drawings, it is to be understood that they are merely for the purpose of illustration and that various changes in construction may be resorted to in the course of manufacture in order that the invention may be utilized to the best advantage according to circumstances which may arise, without in any manner departing from the spirit and intention of the device, which is to be limited only in accordance with the appended claims.
