GROUND WIRE CLAMP. No. 283,276. Patented Aug. 14, 1883.
WITNESSES INVENTOR.
W2 Q By his Momma flenrynrr PATENT OFFICE. 1
HENRY w. rorE, or ELIZABETH, NEW JEEsEY.
GROUND-W IRE CL'AMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 110.283,?76, dated August 14, 1883.
Application filed March 21,1883. (Nomodel.)'
To all whom, it may concern.- I
Be it known that I, HENRY WV. Porn, a citizen of the United 1 States, and a resident of Elizabeth, in the county of- Union and State of me May 21, 1881, I have shown and described a clamp for securing telegraphic, telephonic, or other electric conductors to gas, water, or other pipes, or to rods connected with the ground, whereby an earth terminal for the conductor, through the agency of pipes or rods, may be effected cheaply, effectively, and with out the necessity of soldering.
My presentinvention relates tothe subjectmatter of said application; and its object is-to simplify and cheapen the form of the clamp therein described, at the same time producing a clamp which may be readily applied to pipes and rods in special positions and situations to which the application of my former clamp would sometimes be inconvenient or difficult. I l
The subject-matter claimedas new will be hereinafter specifically pointed out.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my improved clamp as applied to a pipe orrod, and Fig. 22 1s a sec:
tional view of the same. J. 1
Referring to the drawings, A is the body of the clamp, which is preferably made of cast metalsuch as brass-and is provided with a curved inner surface, as shown,,adapted to fit the cylindrical. metallic pipe 13, and expose a considerable surface to make metallic contact therewith, in order to form an efficient electrical connection.
O is a screw which passes through a threaded aperture in one end of the body of the clamp and bears againstthe exterior of the pipe, thereby holding the clamp firmly in position and in contact'with the pipe.
' The endof the wire-D, which forms the terminal of a telegraphic, telephonic, or other line. of electrical communication, is bent into\ a loop, and is firmly attached to and in electrical contact with the clamp by means, of the screw F, which secures the loop between the metallic washers E E.
The clamp above described is especially 1 adapted for application to a pipe which is situated in direct contact with a wall or partition, so that one portion of its circumference is not accessible. I
It may be preferable in some cases, instead of making use of a binding-screw, to solder a short piece of wire. to the body of the clamp,
and to connect this short piece of wire with the conductingwire by splicing or twisting their ends together in a well-known manner.
In order to make a perfect metallic connection between the clamp and the pipe or rod to which it is attached, the outer surface of the pipe or rod and the inner surface of the clamp should be brightened by rubbing them with a file or emery-paper before putting them .together.
The device hereinbefore described may with advantage be constructed of a number of different sizes corresponding to the regular sizes of commercial gas and-water pipe.
I claim as my invention- 1. As a new article of manufacture, the hereinbefore-described ground-wire clamp for electrical conductors, consisting of the metallic body, having its inner surface made con cave to fit a cylindrical pipe or rod, and the screw for securing it to the pipe or rod and maintaining it in metallic contact therewith.
2. The combination, substantially as here'- inbefore set forth, of the metallic body of the clamp, having its inner surface made concave to fit a cylindrical pipe or rod, and provided with a screw for securing the same thereto,
and an electrical conductor attached to or con-' nected with the clamp.
In testimonywhereof I have hereunto subscribed my name this 20th day of March, A. D. 1883.
