Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARVIN SMITH, OF NEV HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
PEACH-FABER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 28,310, dated May 15, 1860.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARVIN SMITH, of the city of New I-Iaven, county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented av new and Improved Machine for Par-ing Peaches; and I do declare that the following is a full and exact description.
To enable others to make and use my invention I will say, that Figure l, is a perspective View, A, representing a bottom or platform of wood, upon which the machine is fastened.
B,represents a part of the cast iron frame, which I call a rail, a cross section of which, taken through at the dotted line h, is represented n Fig. 2. The post, or standard a, at the end of the rail B, supports the driving wheel C,- and the fork D, by suitable bearings, and on the outer end of the spindle of the said fork D, is fastened the pinion c, which pinion meshes into and is driven by the wheel C.
E, represents another rail, in all respects like the one marked B, except that the post, or standard CZ, through which the spindle of the fork F, has a bearing is placed at about midway between the ends of the rail E. The cross section of the rail E, is also seen in Fig. 2.
Both of the rails, B, and E, are semi-cylindrical, externally, and concave internally so that when the concave sides are placed together or in contact, a cavity, or barrel is formed as at m, Fig. 2. In the said cavity or barrel fm, is inserted, a spiral spring 0, one end of which spring bears against the head, or end of the rail B, opposite to or farthest from the driving wheel C, while the other end of said spring bears against a similar head at the end of the rail E, near the driving wheel C. Said spring acting by expansion, does, at all times press, or force the fork F, in the direction of the fork D.
The rails B, and E, are held together with screws, and in such a manner as to allow them to slip, the one against the other, so that the fork F, may be moved backwardor from the fork D, when required, either to place a peach between the two forks, or to remove one therefrom, n, representing one of said screws, fitted loosely through a slot or groove s, made along, and through the side of the rail B, and screwed firmly into the head or end of the rail E. The other, or opposite ends of the rails are held together with a like screw-though not shown in the drawings, fitted loosely through the slot or groove made along and through the side of the rail E, and screwed firmly into the head, or end of the rail B.
The two forks represented by D, and F, have each two diverging prongs, the inner edges of which prongs, are made sharp, and designed to indent, or cut into the ends of the peach stone to prevent the peach from slipping from between the forks, while it is being pared. Said forks would be better however if made with three or four prongs eac i.
I, represents the handle to the paring knife, which may be made of wood or metal, substantially like those long known and used upon the common apple paring machines, lw, representing the cutting or paring knife.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with the stationary hollow concave rail B, standard a, and fork D, of the sliding hollow concave rail E, standard d, fork F, and spring o, as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
MARVIN SMITH.
