W. W. ASHBY. POTATO PLANTBR NQ. 288,059. 'Patented Aug.. 1888.
Altornyl l mwa..
am@ {wx/WW Hanf/988158 Y Y l UNITED STATES PATENT Ormea VILLIAM WV. ASHBY, OF BOREMAN, VEST VIRGINIA.
POTATO-PLANTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 283,059, dated August 14, 1883.
` Application filed April 4, 1883. (No model.)
.To @ZZ whomz't may concern:
Bel-it known that I, VILJpIAM-V. 4AsHBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boreman, in the county of Wood and State of `W'est Virginia, have invented a new and useful Potato-Planter, of which the following is a specilication, reference being had'to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to potato-planters; vand it has for its object to provide a machine which shall be simple, convenient, and useful for the purpose stated. l
To this end the invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure l `is a perspective view of my improved potatoplanter.Y Fig. 2 is a top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear view, and Fig. 4 is aylongitudinal vertical sectional view of the machine.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures. y y
A in the drawings designates a central beam or tongue, having a standard, B, which carries the plow or furrow-opener C. y To the `sides of the beam A additional beams D D are secured, having standards E E in rear of the standard B, and carrying the coverers F F. To the outer sides of the'beams D D are secured rearwardly extending brackets G G, carrying vertical frame-pieces H H. Be-` tween the latter, at the upper and lower ends, and near the center, are journaled shafts I, J, andK. The lower shaft, J, carries the furrowwheel L, which travels in the furrow behind the plow and imparts motion to the operating mechanism.
Therear ends of the brackets Gr G support y the hopper P, which has a slot or opening, Q,
of sufficient size to admit of the passage, of the elevator-buckets O.' Said slot or opening is normally covered by a slide, R, which is forced in a forward direction by asuitablyarranged spring, S. The front end of the seed-slide R has a downwardlyextending lip., T, which the elevator-buckets engage on their upward passage, thereby forcing the seed-` slide back until the bucket hasV passed, when the pressure ofthe spring forces the slide again forward, thereby closing the slot or opening.
.To the rear side of the standard B1 of the furrow-opener is secured a tube or conveyer, U, having at' its upper end a chute, V, fitted adjustably between the rearends of the beams D D. The chute receives theV seed from the buckets, and the tube conveys it to directly behind the furrow-opener, where it is deposited.
The operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. It is simple, convenient, and easily manipulated. i
`I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the VUnited States- 1.111 a potato-planter, the combination of the center or main beam having a standard carrying a furrow-openerand a conveyeretube,
shaft, a b elt connecting the lower with the central `shaft, `and a belt running upon the central and upper shafts, and carrying elevator-buckets adapted to take the seed from the hopper and dump it in a conveyer-'chute attached to the standard of the furrow-opener, as set forth. f
3. In a potato-planter, the combination of the center beam having a standard carrying a furrow-opener anda conveyer-tube, the side beams-carrying the coverers, the hopper, an elevator taking the seed from said hopper, and a chute adjustable between the rear ends of the side beams, as set forth.
4. The `combination of the frame, the transverse shafts, the furrow-wheel upon the lower shaft, a belt connecting the lower with the central shaft7 `an elevator running upon the central and` upper shafts7 the hopper, the seedslrde having a downwardly-projecting lip at its front end adapted to be engaged by the elevator-buckets, and a spring arranged to force the said seed-slide forwardly, substantially as set forth` i In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my Io i o wn I havehereto afxed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VILLIAM WILSON ASHBY.
Witnesses:
R. HEBER SMITH, N. H. HATCHER.
