(Cl. 155-182) This invention generally relates to a slip cover holding device and more specifically provides a device for use in conjunction with furniture for retaining slip covers on the furniture in a positive and detachable manner wherein the slip covers will be retained in a neat appearing condition.

Slip covers disposed on furniture for protecting the furniture upholstery are not normally locked in position, and after the furniture has been used for a period of time, the slip covers-normally move to an abnormal condition which is very unattractive and which also damages the slip covers by stretching the material from which they have been made and possibly causing injury to such material. Accordingly, it is the primary object of the present invention to provide a slip cover holding device for retaining slip covers in a positive and neat wrinkle-free condition.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a slip cover holding device which may be employed with furniture that has already been constructed or with furniture being constructed.

Still another object of the present invention is to pro vide a slip cover holding device for furniture wherein one-half of a zipper fastener is attached to the furniture and the other half of the zipper fastener is attached to the slip cover at certain positions thereon for retaining the slip cover in position but yet permitting detachment of the slip cover for cleaning or laundering or replacement.

Other important features of the present invention reside in its simplicity of construction, ease of attachment to slip covers, ease of assembly and disassembly of the slip covers on the furniture, its particular adaptation for its purposes and its relatively inexpensive manufacturing costs.

These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and opeartion as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a chair having a slip cover thereon and utilizing the slip cover holding device of the present invention;

Figure 2 is a transverse, vertical sectional view taken substantially upon a plane passing along section line 2-2 of Figure 1 illustrating the details of the slip cover holding device;

Figure 3 is a detailed sectional view taken substantially upon a plane passing along section line 3-3 of Figure 2 illustrating further details of the slip cover holding device;

Figure 4 is a perspective view of the portion of the slip cover holding device mounted on the furniture;

With reference to the drawings, the numeral 10 generally designates the slip cover holding device of the present invention illustrated in use on an upholstered chair 12 having supporting legs 14, arm rests 18, a back 20 and aseat portion 22. The slip cover 24 is provided with similar portions for covering and overlying the upholstery of the chair 12 for protecting the upholstery thereof and retaining the upholstery in a clean and unworn condition. The rear corner edge of the slip cover 24 is provided with a vertically disposed zipper fastener 26 that is provided with free lower ends for facilitating the placement and removal of the slip cover 24 on the chair 12.

The seat portion 28 of the slip cover 24 is provided with one-half of a zipper fastener as designated'by the numeral 30 on three sides thereof together with a slide fastener 32 for movement thereon. The seat 22 of the chair 12 is providedwith one-half of a zipper fastener, as designated by the numeral 34 on the two sides and the rear thereof for engagement with the Zipper portion 3%) by the slide fastener 32. The zipper portions 39 and 34 on the sides and rear of the chair l2 and the seat cover 24are separate and independent and are sequentially fastened for facilitating the attachment of theseat cover 24. The rear zippers are normally attached first, after which the two side zipper fasteners are then sequentially attached wherein the seat 28 of the slip cover 24 will be securelyand positively secured to and in overlying relation to the seat 22 of'the chair 12'fo'r retaining the slip cover 24 in a neat unwrinkled condition.

For mounting the half of the zipper designated by the numeral 34 to the chair 12, an elongated plate member 36 is provided with the zipper portion 34 along the upper edge thereof and the lower edge of the plate 36 is provided with a laterally extending angulated edge 38 which is slightly upturned for engagement with a downwardly facing horizontal ledge 40 on the chair 12 formed by the horizontal frame member 42 which acts to make up the arm member 18 of the chair 12. Also, the horizontal ledge 40 extends across the back 20 of the chair 12 and is formed by a rear frame member 44, as designated in Figure 3. Inasmuch as the seat 22 of the chair 12 is disposed against the inner surface of the arms 18 and the plate member 36 is disposed between the seat 22 and the arm members 18 and the back member 2t the plates 36 will be retained in position with the angulated edges 38 disposed under the downwardly facing ledges 40, thereby retaining the slip cover 2a in position. Normally, the zipper portion 34 is slightly below the upper edge of the seat cushion 22, as illustrated in Figure 2, thereby retaining the zipper portion 34 in an out-of-the-way or an out-of-sight condition when the chair 12 is utilized without slip covers 24. The fastening and holding device of the present invention permits the slip covers 24 to be removed for laundering or the like but yet retains such slip covers in a wrinkle-free condition, thereby preventing excessive wear and damage to the slip covers caused by pulling and sliding of the slip covers in relation to the chair.

The form of the invention illustrated in Figures 1-4 is primarily adaptable for use in conjunction with furniture that has already been constructed wherein the frame members 42 and 44 are a conventional type of chair construction.

In instances where the slip cover holding device is to be installed on the furniture as it is being constructed, a modified plate member 46 may be provided having a reversely bent hook-shaped lower edge 48 which is substantially U-shaped in cross-section and provided with one-half of zipper 34 on the upper edge thereof. Secured to the outer edge of a frame member 50 within the chair 12 is a mounting plate 52 having a plurality of longitudinal apertures 54 for receiving fasteners 56 wherein the plate 52 is mounted on the frame member 50. The upper edge of the mounting plate 52 is provided with a downwardly opening reversely bent hooked edge 58 for interlocking engagement with the hooked edge 48 of the plate member 46 thereby detachably securing the plate member 46 to the mounting plate 52, substantially as illustrated in Figure 5.

Again it is noted that the zipper edge 34 is disposed below the upper edge of the seat 22 and between the seat cushion 22 and the arm 18, thereby retaining the plate member 46 in position but yet permitting release and removal of the plate member 46 in the event such action becomes advisable. In each instance, the slip cover holding device 10 retains the slip covers 24 in position on the chair 12 in a wrinkle-free condition but yet permits easy removal of the slip covers 24 for laundering, replacement or for any other reason. The mounting plate 52 and the plate members 36 or 46 may be constructed of any readily available sheet material such as sheet metal or the like which is relatively inexpensiveand preferably rustproof so that it Will conform to current standards of the furniture manufacturing industry.

The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since, numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described and claimed, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.

What is claimed as new is as follows:

1. A slip cover holding device comprising an elongated 4 7 plate member having an angulated edge adapted to be releasably supported from the frame of a piece of furniture, one-half of a zipper fastener on the other edge of said plate member, the other half of the zipper fastener being attached to the slip cover, and a slide member releasably attaching the halves of the zipper together thereby releasably securing the slip cover to the furniture.

2. A slip cover holding device comprising an elongated plate member having an angulated edge adapted to be releasably supported from the frame 'of a piece of furniture, one half of a zipper fastener on the other edge of said plate member, the other half of the zipper fastener being attached to the slip cover, and a slide member releasably attaching the halves of the zipper together thereby releasably securing the slip cover to the furniture, the frame of the furniture having a downwardly facing horizontal ledge, said angulated edge projecting under and engaging said ledge.

A slip cover holding device for retaininga slip cover on an article of furniture having an internal frame comprising a plate member adapted to be releasably supported from the frame, a portion of a fastener on said plate member, a portion of a fastener on the slip cover, and means for releasably interlocking said portions there of detachably securing the slip cover to the article of furniture. a a

A slip cover holding device for retaining a slip cover on an article of furniture having an internal frame comprising a plate member adapted to be releasably supported from the frame, a portion of a fastener on said'plate member, a portion of a fastener on the slip cover, and means for releasably interlocking said l portions thereof detachably securing the slip cover to the article of furniture, said plate member having a laterally extending lower edge for projecting under a portion of the frame.
