ROAD-SCRAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 282,862, dated August '7, I883.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM DOAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bliss'field, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road-Scrapers and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. V
Figure l of the drawings is a perspective view of my road-scraper. Fig. 2 is a side view, and Fig. 3 is a rear view, of the same.
This invention has relation to improvements in ditch and road scrapers; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim appended.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the body of the scraper, which is usually constructed of wood, and is strengthened on its upper and under surfaces by the lateral irons a and b, and by the intermediate irons, c. p
At each end of the scraper is made a long slot, (1, extending from front to rear, and across the upper end of the slot is placed, on the up per surface of the scraper, a rear plate, 6.
The lower portion of the scraper is faced across on the upper surface with steel, as indicated at 9, this steel plate forming the cutting or scraping edge of the machine. In its working position the scraper is inclined, and it is providedwith handles H, extending rearward,
whereby its inclination is regulated.
Below thelower end of each slot dis provided, on the under side of the scraper, a bearing, k, to'which is pivoted the lower and rear end of a curved draft-beam, Ii, which extends, by its curved portion m, up through the slot d, and then forward for attachment to the draft chain or coupling. The curvature of the portion m of the beam L is sufficiently rapid to allow the slot cl, when the scraper is thrown forward in discharging its accumulated load, to pass well over the curved part of the beam, its upper 'end engaging the beam well forward, so that the scraper will be held inaforwardly-inclined p osition. After discharging its load the scrap er is pulled back into working position.
