2 Claims. (Cl. 22-106) The present invention relates to a mold jacket and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.
Generally the invention relates to a jacket for a sand mold which is adapted to provide a jacket which may be used to enclose the usual type of sand mold so that it may be held against displacement during the pouring of the metal. The device consists of a pair of side plates and a pair of end plates. Each of the end plates is provided with a keyway and each of the side plates is provided at each of its ends with a key, the keys being adapted to quickly and easily engage or disengage from the keyways. In assembled condition the jacket, side plates and end plates all taper in an upward and inward direction. Novel means is provided for maintaining the device against collapse when once it has been assembled by means of the keys and keyways above set forth.
It is an object of the invention, therefore, to provide a novel mold jacket having novel means for its assembly and disassembly.
Another object of the invention is to provide, in a device of the character set forth, novel locking means forming a part of the invention.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character set forth which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and yet effective and eflicient in use.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character set forth which is entirely stable when in assembled condition.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of an embodiment of the invention,
Figure 2 is a side elevational view thereof,
Figure 3 is an end elevational view of the device illustrated in Figures 1 and 2,
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken substantially along i line 44 of Figure 1,
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken substantially along line 55 of Figure 1,
Figure 6 is a perspective view, partly broken away, of a side plate forming a part of the invention,
Figure 7 is an exploded perspective view of an end plate and stop members forming parts of the invention, and
Figure 8 is an enlarged fragmentary plan view, partly broken away, illustrating in detail one of the stop members forming a part of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, there is shown therein a pair of side plates 10 and a pair of end plates 11, both side plates and end plates having longitudinally extending reinforcing ridges 12. The end plates 21 are centrally provided with horizontally and 2,828,517 Patented Apr. 1, 1958 ice 2 outwardly extending integrally formed handles at their upper ends, as indicated at 13.
Each of the end plates and each of the side plates is provided with an integrally formed horizontally and outwardly extending base 14 adapted to rest upon the ground, such ground being indicated at 15.
Each of the side plates 10 and end plates 11 extend in an upward and inward direction when in assembled condition as will be apparent in Figures 1 to 5, inclusive, and each is provided with a flat inner face.
Each of the side plates is provided with upwardly and inwardly extending end walls 16 as shown, for example, in Figure 6 and to each end wall 16 there is integrally connected a key generally indicated at 17, each key 17 consisting of a bar 18 extending in spaced parallel relationship to the adjacent wall 16 and integrally connected thereto by a horizontally extending centrally disposed web 19.
Each of the end plates 11 is provided adjacent each of its ends with a keyway generally indicated at 20 and each keyway 20 includes an opening 21 having an upwardly and inwardly curved inner wall 22, a horizontal bottom wall 23 and a vertical outer wall 24 together with a centrally disposed horizontal slot 25 which extends from the opening 21 to the adjacent outer end of the end plate 11, all as indicated in Figure 7.
Adjacent the upper end of each end plate 11 in the outer face thereof there is provided inwardly of each of the walls 24 a threaded opening 26 for the reception of pins 27. 1
In operation, it will be apparent that, in order to assemble the device, it is only necessary to first place the end plates 11 in an upright position but spaced from each other sufliciently so that the side plates 10 may be connected thereto. In connecting the side plates, they are first held in a horizontal position at which time the keys 17 may be introduced into the keyways 20, the webs 19 passing through the slots 25 whereupon the side plates 10 may be turned to an upright position, it being apparent that the flat bottom walls of the webs f9 will then rest upon the fiat bottom walls 23. It will also be apparent that the openings 21 are of sufiicient size to permit such turning movement. After the side plates have thus been assembled with the end plates, the pins 27 may then be threaded into the openings 26 thus preventing any further inward movement of the side plates until it is desired to disassemble the same whereupon the pins 27 must be removed and the reverse of the operation above described may take place. The thus assembled device will present inner walls which slope slightly upwardly and inwardly thus making for a more stable structure.
While but one form of the invention has been shown and describedherein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a pair of side plates, a pair of end plates, and means interengaging the ends of said side plates with the end portions of said end plates, said means comprising a T- shaped key formed integrally with each end of each of said side plates and a keyway formed in each end portion of each of said end plates, each of said keyways including a vertically extending opening having an upwardly and inwardly curved inner wall, horizontally extending top and bottom walls, a vertically extending outer wall and a centrally disposed horizontal slot extending from said opening to the adjacent outer end of said end plale, and means for locking said plat esiii engaged nqsi- A device as defined in claim 1 ;wherein the inner faces of said plates, when interengaged, extend in inwardly and upwardly projected planes.
