Description

March 25, 1958 c. BENNETT 2,828,056
GARMENT HANGERS Filed Feb. 23, 1955 INVENTOR. CE |L IA BENNETT BY R MSW ATTORNEYS United States Patent GARMENT HANGERS Cecilia Bennett, Cleveland, Ohio Application February 23, 1955, Serial No. 489,973
1 Claim. (Cl. 223-93) My invention relates to garment hangers and relates more particularly to hangers of the type particularly adapted for use in hanging women's dresses, blouses, or the like.
It is an object of my invention to provide a garment hanger of the type referred to which will be provided with means whereby sleeveless evening dresses, dresses of the drop shoulder type or scoop-neck type, etc. may be supported thereby as well as dresses of the more conventional type.
Another object of my invention is to provide a garment hanger ofv the type referred to having means adapted to securely retain a garment of whatever type placed thereon and which will eliminate any accidental slipping of the garment from the hanger during use.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a garment hanger of the type referred to which will be flexible to accomplish the purposes thereof.
A further object of my invention is to provide a garment hanger of the type referred to which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and highly eflicient in use.
Other objects of my invention and the invention itself will become more readily apparent by reference to the appended drawings and to the description that follows, in which drawings:
Fig. l is a top plan view of the garment hanger of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a side view of the improved garment hanger of my invention showing in dotted lines the position of the guide slots as a garment is being placed on the hanger;
Fig. 3 is an end view of the garment hanger of Figs. 1 and 2;
Fig. 4 is a partial side view of the hanger of Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, showing one of the clamps thereof in its expanded or open position.
Referring now to the drawings in all of which like parts are designated by like reference characters, at I show the garment hanger of my invention, said hanger being preferably provided with hook means 11 or other attachment means extending upwardly'frorn the generally bowed body portion 12 of the hanger and integrally secured thereto in any manner as is well known in the art to which my invention appertains.
The bowed body portion of my invention is preferably formed of flexible plastic material and is formed with a pair of guide slots 13 and 14, each slot initiating in the central portion of the hanger body portion 12 adjacent the hook or attachment means 11, each similarly proceeding longitudinally to opposite ends of the body portion 12 in which each is disposed, being open at the ends thereof as shown at 13a and 14a.
A pair of clamps 15 and 16 are thus provided which are relatively long and tapering and which are separated by greater width at the portions where the same merge into the central portion 17 of the hanger and by a lesser Width at their outer tapered meeting ends 15a and 16a. When a garment is inserted in the guides or slots 13 and 14 it is thus wedgingly forced with very slight pressure, because of the flexibility of the plastic material, as best shown in Figs. 2 and 4, into the slots and the relatively increasing width of the slots thereafter affords easy placement of the garment on the holder or hanger, the dotted lines shown in Fig. 1 illustrating the degree of opening preferably permitted by the construction when the garment is placed thereon.
The solid line position illustrated in the same Fig. 1 shows both the initial and restored or mating position of the ends of the hanger surrounding the slot after the garment is placed on the hanger.
It will be noted that a notch 18 and a notch 19 are provided on each of the portions 15 and 16 adjacent and communicating with the slots 13 and 14, said notches being provided for the purpose of disposing garment straps therein to accommodate slips, evening clothes with narrow straps, skirt loops or the like.
Also it will be noted that the upper surfaces of the clamping tongues 15 are preferably curved slightly downwardly wherefor blouses with scoop-necks may be either supported on the uper surface thereof or inserted within the slots depending upon the width of the neck within the slots.
Also, the garment hanger of my invention will support a conventional type garment on the upper surface thereof or a wide necked garment within the slots or garments having dropped sleeves within the slots.
The purposes and functions of my invention will become more readily apparent to those in the art to which my invention appertains and to women in general using such garments.
While I have described my invention in connection with a preferred embodiment thereof, it will be apparent that numerous and extensive departures may be made therefrom, such as adding a skirt bar and hooks or the like, without however departing from the spirit of my invention and the scope of the appended claim.
A garment hanger comprising a central body portion, a pair of uppermost and a pair of lowermost integrally formed oppositely outwardly directed arms extending from said body portion, said uppermost and said lowermost arms being vertically interspaced at the inwardly directed portions thereof, said uppermost and said lowermost arms being continuously downwardly bowed from their inwardly, integrally formed ends to the outwardly directed ends thereof, the outermost ends of said upper arms contacting the outermost ends of said lower arms, said upper arms being flexible wherebyrthey can be forced out of contact with said lower arms, said lowermost arms being notched at the uppermost convex edges thereof at a substantially medial point between the outermost ends thereof and said body portion.
