CGMBINATION CRANE AND PILE DRIVER Ernest W. Taylor, Jr., and Peter Nielsen, Bay City, Mich,
assignors, by rnesne assignments, to Industrial Brownhoist Corporation, Bay City, Mich., a corporation of Delaware Application May 21, 1953, Serial No. 356,504
12 Claims. (CI. 61-74) This invention relates to combination crane and pile drivers and more particularly to means for supporting the pile driver leader in a manner which will automatically fold it to horizontal position upon the lowering of the crane boom.
One of the prime objects of our invention is to design a. combination crane and pile driver in which the leader is secured to and supported by the boom of the crane and in a manner which will permit it to be folded horizontally so that the boom with the leader underslung therebeneath will readily clear trestles, bridges, overpasses and the like, as it is transported from one location to another.
Another object of the invention is to design a combination boom and pile driver in which the leader is automatically swung down for transportation and then restored to upright operative position when the boom is adjusted to predetermined positions.
A further object of the invention is to design a combination crane and pile driver in which the leader swings horizontally and moves outwardly relative to the boom when the boom is swung down, so that the entire leader is disposed forwardly of the crane platform and can be separately supported if desired on a companion flat car .ahead of the crane.
With the above and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arranger ent of parts, hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the form, size, proportion, and minor details of construction, without departing from the spirit, or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the combination crane and pile driver, the broken lines indicating a fiat car and the boom and leader swung down to near horizontal position.
Fig. 2 is a front elevational View thereof, the broken lines indicating various adjusted battering positions of the leader.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged, sectional plan view through the leader taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged, sectional, elevational view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings in which we have shown the preferred embodiment of our invention, the pile driver is shown associated with a suitable carrier or vehicle which in the instant case comprises a locomotive crane carriage 1% upon which is provided a turntable 11 of the locomotive crane type. Revolvably mounted on the turntable 11 is an A-frame 12 and the operators cab C in which is mounted the necessary mechanical equipment for driving and controlling the device.
A boom 13 is pivotally connected to the front end of the cab structure C by means of a pin 14 and furnishes support for the conventional hammer-accommodating ice leader 15 in a manner to be presently described, the leader being preferably formed of standard sections with parallel guides 16 provided as usual.
The boom 13 is held in desired position by means of a cable 17, one end of which is anchored to the head of the boom at 18; thence the cable is trained over guide sheaves 19 and 20, and thence leading to and being wound on the hoist drum D provided in the cab of the crane.
Pivotally connected to the head of the boom at 22 is a leader hanger unit U, said unit comprising a pair of hangers 23 with a horizontally disposed stop block B spanning said hangers in a position to bear against the adjacent face of the leader to space it from the head of the boom, the lower end of the unit being universally connected by a pair of pins 24, 24" to the horizontally disposed channel brace 25 as shown, thus supporting the leader in vertical position, the stop block B limiting inward swinging movement thereof so as to prevent parallel disposition of the unit U and the leader 15 and thereby permit swinging movement of the unit U to be imparted through the leader even when the leader is in pile driving position.
A strut member M serves to stabilize the lower end section of the leader, one end of the strut being pivotally connected by a pin 26 to a bracket 27 provided preferably on the boom 13, and a screw slide S is secured to the outer end of said strut, said slide being pivotally secured to the slotted leader side channels 28 by means of bolts 29.
A threaded screw 36 is provided in the slide S, and by application of a wrench (not shown), to the ends of the screw 30, the slide can be transversely adjusted as indicated in broken lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings. A stud (not shown) may be mounted in the screw slide channel 31 to secure the slide in its adjusted position.
A strut cable 32 is anchored to the strut at the point 33, thence leading over a sheave 34 provided on the boom and thence being connected to a turn buckle 35 which is attached to the shaft 36 which spans the A- frame, this cable permitting temporary folding of the leader and holding it in folded position when the boom and leader are swung down.
A hammer H, shown in broken lines in Fig. 1, is slidably mounted in the leader 15 between the guide rails 16, and a hammer line 37 is connected to said hammer, thence being trained over a first sheave 38 and a second sheave 39, both of which are journaled between the top brackets 49-40. Thence the line leads downwardly alongside a guide pulley 37' on the boom, and is wound on one of a pair of drums W provided in the crane cab, said drums being driven from the power plant of the crane (not shown) as usual. Similar guide sheaves 41 and 42 are also journaled between the top brackets 40 and a pile line 43 is trained over said sheaves and over a second sheave 39 mounted adjacent to the first sheave 39. One end of the pile line 43 is anchored to the leader and the other end is fastened to the second winding drum W.
When it is desired to fold the leader for travel, the hammer H is first lowered to its lowermost position as indicated at H in Fig. 1, and the boom then may be lowered whereupon relative pivotal movement of the elements U, 15, and M will be effected via the cable 32 to fold the assembly and permit passage under desired clearances.
To place the folded leader assembly on a flat car F, (shown in broken lines in Fig. 1), it is merely necessary to remove the hanger pin 22 and the end of the boom, andthe pin 26 at the boom end of the strut.
From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that we have perfected a very'simple, practical and eco- 'nomical means for folding thecrane boom and leader to permit pass age under bridges, tre'stles "and "other over head obstacles. V
