Description

(No Model.) v
' P. MOFADDEN.
I HARNESS TERRET.
Patented-Aug; 7, 1883.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PATRICK MOFADDEN, on PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HAR NESS-TERRET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 282,743, dated August '7, 1883.
ApplicationfiledJune 7,1883. (No model.)
I T at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PATRICK MoFADDnN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in HarnessTerrets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and axact description of the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section, and Fig. 2 a side elevation, of my improvement.
My invention has for its object to provide a terret provided with a base loop or band for the passage of a sliding back-band, said base having means for readily attaching it to and permitting its detachment from the saddleplate.
A further object of myvinvention is to provide aterret-base of simple construction, which may be screwed into the saddle-plate and into which the terret-ring may be screwed, as hereinafter fully described. Referring to the accompanying drawings, A indicates a terret, comprising a base, B, and ring 0. The base B is in the form of a' loop or oblong ring, having top and bottom bars, I) b, and sides b 11 Projecting from the bottom bar, I), is a threaded stud or male screw, b", and projecting from the upper bar, I), is a boss, I), having a threaded socket or female screw, b The ring 0 has a male screw, 0, which engages with the female b or, if desired, the ring 0 and base B may be integral and inseparable.
The screw If is intended to enter a metallic plate with threaded opening in the harnesssaddle, or into a nut or burr secured in said 40 saddle.
The base B, being open, affords a passage- Way for a sliding back-band. To avoid cutting said band on the edges of the bar I), the latter may be made convex on its upper side, and to reduce friction a roller having bear- 5 ings for its journals in the sides b b may be provided. i
It will be noted that the ring 0 stands transverse of the opening in the base, inasmuch as the reins, which pass through the terret-rings, 5o
v cross the saddle, while the back-band rests lengthwise of the latter.
A terret of this construction affords a passage-way and guide for a sliding back-band. It can readily be attached to and detached from as well as adjusted in position 011 a harnesssaddle. When the ring is made separate from the base, it can be readily taken off for cleaning, replating, or gilding, or to permit the substitution of a different pattern of ring whenever desired.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is 1. A terret having an open base for the passage of a sliding back-band, a rein-opening transverse of and above said open base, and'a central projecting threaded boss or screw for insertion ina saddle plate or burr, substantially as shown and described.
2. A terret comprising a base, B, with central projecting screw on its under side, a female-threaded boss on its upper side, and a ring, 0, with screw 0, fitting the female screw in the base, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoingl have 7 5 hereunto set my hand this 5th day of June, 1883.
PATRICK DIOFADDEN.
