Appiication May 17, 1954, Serial No. 430,055 1 Claim. ((31. 191-122) cleaning brush can be compactly stored when not in use, yet are rendered conveniently accessible for removal with the utmost ease and dispatch, all in such manner as to effectively protect the contents against damage and keep them free from dust and other forms of contamination.
Another object of my invention is to provide a carrying'case of the above described character embodying a reel-forming body which contains the shaver and accessories and is rotatably mounted on a base to enable the electrical cord to be easily and quickly wound in helical formation on the periphery of the body and secured against displacement by means of the end plugs of the cord, or unwound from the body and plugged into the electric shaver and the source or" current supply with the utmost convenience, all so as to materially expedite and simplify use of the shaver and to protect the cord against premature wear and kinking, and thus greatly prolong its service life.
A further object of my invention is to provide a carrying case as above described in which the electric shaver, accessories and electrical cord are supported in such positions as to be attractively displayed through a transparent cover of the case, all so as to greatly enhance the appearance of the case and contents and to materially aid in merchandising the shaver by enabling dealers to present an exceedingly attractive packaged unit to prospective customers.
With these and other objects in View, my invention resides in the combinations, arrangements and functional relationships of elements as set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the carrying case and electrical cord mounting for electric shavers embodying my invention, with the case cover in section;
Figure 2 is a vertical axial sectional view of the carrying case and electrical cord mounting for electric shavers embodying my invention;
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the invention with the cover of the case omitted; and
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Referring specifically to the drawings, my invention in its illustrated embodiment broadly comprises a base A, a body B and a cover C for the latter. The base A is preferably constructed of heavy metal in the form of a disk 16 to the fiat bottom of which is secured by a suitable adhesive a disk 11 of sheet rubber or other suitabie friction-creating material.
I 2,825,767 Patented li/lar. 4, 1958 ice The body B may be molded of plastic or other suit able material to provide a deep cup formed by a cylindrical side wall 12 and a bottom wall 13 having a central opening 14 receiving a pivot pin 15, and a shallow counterbore 16 in which seats flush a large flat head 17 on one end of the pin 15. The pin 15 passes through a central opening 18 in the base A and is reduced in diameter and externally threaded at 19 to receive a washer 2t) and a nut 21 in a recess 22 formed in the bottom of the disk 10, all as clearly shown in Figure 2. With the nut 21 tightened to force the washer against the an nular shoulder 23 of the pin 15 the body B rests on the large centrally located bearing flange 24 formed on the top of the base A for rotation about the axis of the pin.
At its bottom wall 13 the body 13 projects outwardly from its side wall 12 to provide an annular shoulder 25 against which seats the open end of the cup-shaped cover C which closes the open top of the body, the cover having a snug fit by friction on the enlarged peripheral portion 26 of the side Wall 12 adjacent to the bottom wall 13.
The interior of the body B is divided by a vertical partition 30 to provide a main compartment 31 of sufficient size to receive an electric shaver 32. An abutment in the form of a vertical web 33 disposed radially and directly opposite thepartition 3t) co-acts with the latter to support the shaver in a substantially fixed upright position against displacement in the compartment 31. The upper and inner portion of theweb 33 flares upwardly and radially outward as shown at 34 in Figure 2 so as to guide the shaver to its supported position in the compartment.
The partition 31) terminates in spaced relation to the bottom wall 13 of the body B and is closed by a bottom 35 for co-action with transverse partitions 36 in providing relatively small compartments 37, 38 and 39 for various accessories such as a tube of sharpening compound 40 and a small cleaning brush 41 which are thus rendered conveniently accessible for use when desired.
The periphery of the cylindrical side wall 12 of the body B is reduced in diameter to provide an annular recess 45 which terminates in spaced relation to the enlarged peripheral portion 26 of the side wall and the open upper end of the body. The peripheral portion 26 is provided with an opening 46 into the compartment 31 to freely receive the shaver contact plug 47 on one end of the electrical cord 48 furnished with the shaver, and the recess 45 is of sutficient length and depth to receive the electrical cord when helically wound on the body B in the recess as shown in the drawings.
At its open end the side wall 12 of the body B is provided with a bayonet-type slot 50 which is adapted to receive the other end of the electrical cord 48 and to form a locking shoulder 51 to prevent displacement of the cord when laterally inserted into the slot with the conventional electric plug 52 on said other end of the cord disposed in the compartment 31 as shown in Figure 3, all so as to compactly store the cord 48 on the body in helical formation against premature Wear and kinking, yet render the cord conveniently accessible for unwinding and insertion of the plug 47 into the electric socket 53 of the shaver 32, and the plug 52 into the receptacle (not shown) of the source of current supply.
A simple and quick way of effecting this unwinding operation is to first remove the cover C from the body B and then disengage the cord 48 from the slot 50 by manipulating the plug 52, followed by insertion of the latter into the wall receptacle with one hand while holding the base A in the other hand. By now moving the case away from the wall receptacle the body B will be free to rotate on the base A so as to unwind the cord from the recess 45"tiiitil"'the shaver 'plug' 17 "can be withdrawn from the epeaing 46 for plugging into the socket 53 of the 'shave'r'32. The cord can be as easily replaced on the body by removing the shaver plug 47 from the socket 53 and then inserting it into 'the'openii'i'g 46, followed by fotatiointhe bedy B onithe' base A ina"direction'toWind'fthe cord in the recess 45 as movement of the'case towatdsthe' wall receptacle i's"efl e'cte'd while maintaining the, cord ftaut.
It will be'noted from a consideration of Figures Band 4 that with the shaver 32' supported in the eompar'tment 31', the"shaver plug 47 is confined in a position to preclude'its withdrawal through the openin 46; so as to enablesuffic'ie'nt pulling force to be exerted on the cord to'wind same snugly on the body, and thatthe plug 52 on the otherend of the cord positively prevents the latter fiomfbe'ingwithdrawn through the slotf 5tl,-alls'o as-to insure that the cord will be r naintained in its' safely wound condition: on the body. a n p From the foregoing description itwill be' ifi-anif'e'st that by 'thepro'vi'sion of this invention, an electrieshaver with its electrical cord and accessories will be stored'inacompact, attractive package, with the contentsinstantlyand conveniently accessible for use, and that in 'pai'ticular' the eleet'rical cord can be manipulated by windingon; or 'unwinding from the body with the utmost ease and dispatch soas t'o 'pr'e'vent structural damage to the 'eordandmateri'ally prolong it's' useful life. I' elaim:
n c'azrying case for an electric shaverand "the electrical c'oi'd therefor comprising: a base; a cup-shapedbody defined by a bottom wall and a'cylindrieal side wall rising therefrom for co-action therewith in'providing a'receptaele for the electric shaver; means rotatably mounting the body at its bottom wall on the base; said side wall having an opening therethrough into which the shaverplug at one end of the electrical cord is insertable into the body for winding of the cord helically of the periphery of the body; said side wall having a slot formed to provide a locking shoulder and opening to the free end of said side wall for the lateral insertion of the other end portion of the electrical cord, with the electric outlet plug on said otherend of the cord disposed in the body to co-act with the shaver plug and locking shoulder in maintaining the cord helically wound in said recess; said body having an external annular's'houlder at the bottom wall thereof; and a 'e'up shapedicover frictionally fitting said body and seating against said annular shoulder so as to close the open end of the body and enclose the electrical cord in sufficiently close proximity thereto to prevent displacement of the cord.
