Description
Unite This invention relates generally to hand tools and is ttes Patent more particularly concerned with a novel hand tool such as a screw driver or the like for driving and extracting threaded fasteners.
Oftentimes a hand-held tool such as a screw driver does not provide sucient area whereby the same may be gripped in ones hand for applying suicient torque to loosen or drive a threaded fastener. When this occurs, it is desirable to apply a Wrench or the like extending laterally from the shank portion of such a screw driver wherein the amount of applied torque may be increased.
A primary object of invention is to provide a novel hand tool which includes a one-piece tool shank includingmeans on the lower end portion thereof for engagement with a threaded fastener to be driven, and including about an intermediate upper portion a circumposed handle leaving exposed an end portion of the shank, said tool shank having a rectangular cross section readily conforming to a wrench wherein when said wrench is applied to the exposed upper end portion of the tool shank increased torque may be available for driving a threaded fastener.
A further object of invention in conformance with that set forth is to provide a novel hand tool of the character involved wherein the exposed upper end portion of the tool shank incorporates a transverse aperture therethrough, said exposed end portion of the tool shank receiving thereon a cap member conforming to the outer periphery of the handle on the tool shank and including a bore portion conforming to the exposed end portion of the tool shank for receiving the same therein, said exposed end portion of the tool shank and cap member incorporating resilient urged detent means therebetween for removably retaining the cap member on the exposed end portion of the tool shank, removal of the cap member exposing the transverse aperture portion in the shank wherein a rod or lever may be inserted therethrough for increasing the torque which will be applied by the tool.
Another object of invention in conformance with that set forth is to provide a novel hand tool of the character involved which is readily and economically manufactured, easily used, and highly durable, and satisfactory for the purpose intended.
These together with other objects and advantages which will subsequently become apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure 7 is a sectional view taken substantially on line 7--7 of Figure 5, showing in phantom lines a fragmentary portion of a wrench whichmay be applied on the exposed upper end portion of the shank of the screw driver for the purpose of increasing the torque to be applied therewith; Y
Figure 8 is a top plan view ofthe upper end portion of the screw driver with the cap member removed, showing the manner in which an elongated rod or lever may be extending through the shank of the tool for the purpose of increasing the torque to be applied therewith;
Figure 9 is a fragmentary lower end view of the tool shank of the screw driver incorporating means for engaging a Phillips head screw; and
Figure l0 is a fragmentary lower end View of another embodiment of tool shank for the screw driver, portions being broken away and shown in section, for accommodating therewith a nut element to be driven by the screw driver.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the novel screw driver is indicated generally at 10, said screw driver incorporating an elongated tool shank 12 which is of a one piece construction, having a rectangular cross section, and terminating at its lower end in a screw driver blade portion 14 for engaging a drivenV fastener. If desired, as seen in Figures 9 and l0, the shank portion 12 may oe formed at its lower end for engaging a Phillips head screw as indicated at 16 in Figure 9, or formed with a suitable end socket 18, as seen in Figure l0 for engaging a nut element.
The tool shank 12 has circumposed about an intermediate upper end portion a suitable handle of plastic, hard rubber or the like, said handle being indicated at 20, and by virtue of the rectangular cross section of the tool shank when the handle is twisted in the usual manner, the tendency of the same to slip on the tool shank is obviated.
The handle 20 terminates at 22 short of the upper end 24 of the tool shank thus leaving an upper exposed end portion of the tool shank which receives thereon in a blind bore 26 of a cap member 28 which conforms to the outer periphery of the handle 20 constituting a continuation of the same. As seen in Figure 7, a suitable wrench W may be disposed with its jaw portions about the exposed end portion 24 of the tool shank, the handle portion of the wrench extending laterally from the longitudinal axis of the tool shank, and rotation of said wrench accordingly providing means for applying increased torque with the screw driver.
The cap member 2S incorporates from one side portion thereof a bore portion 30 which has extending therein a resilient or spring urged detent assembly 32 comprising a tubular sleeve element 34 having therein a compression spring element 36 in engagement between the rear portion of the sleeve element 34 and a ball or detent element 38 which is retained in the sleeve element 34 by crimping the end of the sleeve member, said ball element extending into the bore 26 of the cap member. The exposed end portion 24 of the tool shank has extending transversely therethrough an aperture 40 engageable with the spring urged ball element 3S for removably retaining the cap member 28 on the exposed end portion of the tool shank.
When the can member is removed from the exposed end portion 24 of the tool shank, as seen in Figure 8, a suitable rod or lever 42, such as a spike. for example, may be inserted through the aperture 40 of the upper end portion of the tool shank and rotation of said rod or lever 42 4oi :the toolshank for removablyA retaining the cap member 251 Y thereon,tlie exposed upper/.end portion oflthertoolshank Y 'means lfor increasing torque to be applied by ,tliejto'olj YsaidY t Y the blinds-berief' I Y ing arene-piece tool shank having; a'polygonalcrojssseg Y 2,825,371; Y n
