After passing the tightening means 12, the fastening strip passes first over the strip reversing member and then over the strip reversing member 11, whereby the coupling links mounted on the beaded edge portion of the strip snugly engage in the recess of the guide members 10 andV 11. The guide members may be stationary bolts, or rollers rotatably mounted on stationary bolts. In the embodiment illustrated in the drawings, the bolts 13 are provided with an annular recess 14 in which engage the coupling links 15 clampingly mounted on the beaded edge portion of the strip 16. The depth of the recess 14 should preferably the other hand, if there are no coupling linksmounted on portionsV of the fastening strip. the, headed edge and adiacent portions of the fastening strip engage in the recess to such an extent that the beaded edge and adjacent strip portions are no longer within reach of the polishing brushes and. for that reason. can not he acted upon by the latter. Tniuring of the beaded edge and adiacent portions by the thin steel wires of ,the brushes is therefore reliably prevented (see Fig. 4l. The guide members 10 and l1 maybe of any suitable kind. and it is. of course, quite possible to devise and arrange the guide members in such a way that the fastening strip with the coupling links mounted on it is brought by the guide members into moreextensivecontact with the polishing brushesrand at different positions or angles with respect thereto.
In order to prevent irregular or nonuniform abrasion of the brushes, and in order to obtain that the lateral edges of the links are acted upon not only in transverse direction` but also in longitudinal direction. the invention contemplates to devise the construction in such a way that the polishing brushes 3 and 4 perform an oscillating movement in axial direction, that isto say, parallel to the direction in which the guide members extend,
whereby the depth of the oscillating movement correrotary movement of the brushes, may be obtained in various ways. Y
In the embodiment shown in Fig. l, the oscillating movement is produced through the rotatable arrangement of the polishing brushes 3 and 4 on their supports 17 and 18 and through the rigid arrangement of the supports 17 and 18, on the rotatably supported shaft 19, whereby the supports 17 and 18 should preferably be mounted on the shaft 19 in such a way that shifting of the supports on the shaft after loosening of the adjusting screw 20 is thereby enabled. In an arrangement like this, thepolishng brushes can be readjusted without difficulty if the worn-olf condition of their circumferential portions makes this necessary. Fastened to the rotatable shaft 19 is further a lever arm 21, having itsfree end yieldingly urged, for instance by means of a spring .21a, against a cam 2lb, driven via a driving wheel 22 -from the motor 2. A construction of this kind causes ing brush 30-is merelyV axially shiftable on a shaft 23,
while rotatory adjustment on the shaft is not possible.
The shaft 23 is rotated by the motor 2. Against the hub 30a of the brush 30 bears a compression spring 24 which constantly urges the brush in outward direction against a stop. Coupled to the hub 30a is an arm 25 of a double-armed lever 25, 26 for instance in such a way that the arm 25 constantly engages with a forked end in an annular groove of the hub. The other arm 26 of the lever rests either against a rotating cam, or against a differential drive. In the embodiment illustrated by way of example in Fig. 2, the differential drive consists of two V-belt pulleys 27 and 2S shiftably mounted on a pin 29 and driven at uniform circumferential speed from the motor 2. The pulley 27 rests with its outer hub against the free end of the lever arm 26. The confronting faces of the inner hubs of the two pulleys 27 and 28 are inclined toward the pin 29 (see Fig. 2). Because of their uniform circumferential speed, but different diameters, the two pulleys rotate at different speeds with respect to each other, and thereby cause, owing to the inclination of the confronting faces of their inner hubs, an axial movement of the pulley 27, resulting in an oscillating movement of the double-armed lever 25, 26, whereby the number of the oscillations depends upon the difference in diameter of the two pulleys and upon the circumferential speed.
The polishing machine as hereinbefore described, polishes and removes the burr from one side of the coupling links fastened in the fastening strip 7 by means of the brush 4, and from the other side of the coupling links by means of the brush 3. It prevents with certainty an injuring of the portions of the strip on which no links are fastened, and further prevents nonuniform abrasion ofthe brushes by means of the oscillating movement performed by the brushes. Owing to the reciprocating movement of the brushes, the links are treated not only in transverse direction, but also in longitudinal direction. If considered necessary, the machine may, of course, be provided with additional pairs of brushes 3 and 4, and appertaining guide members 10 and 11.'
The conveying means 6 may be actuated by means of the driving means 5, or with the aid of an infinitely variable change speed gear, so that it is possible to adjust the speed at which the fastening strip is pulled through the machine in conformity with the degree of roughness of the links mounted on the strip.

In` a machine for polishing slide fastening links mounted in ,sets on` the beaded edge of a strip of indefinite length with vacant places unoccupied by links between the individual sets of links, feeding means and a plurality of strip reversing guide members adapted to continuously feed the strip in zig-zag path with different surfaces of the linksv alternately engaging the guide members, eachkof said"plurality of guide members being provided with a recess of such width and depth that the links of the strip engaging in the recess project therefrom with approximately half the width of their bodies while the unoccupied beaded edge portions of the strip practically completely engage within the recess; and rotary polishing means for said plurality of guide members and adapted to polish the body portions of the links projecting from the recess of the guide members in longitudinal as well as transverse direction of the strip, said rotary polishing means consisting for each of said plurality of guide members of a brush, and of a support on which said brush is rotatably supported; a shaft on which said supports of thebrushes are rigidly and adjustably'mounted in suchmanner that the axis of every brush extends parallel 'to the axis of the appertaining guide member; and rocking means connected with said 'shaft and adapted to rock saidshaft to thereby cause said brushes to perform an oscillating movement sub- References Cited in the ile of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS 441,633 Bennett et al.
