United States Patent ELECTRIC SHAVER HAVING COMBINED RECIP- This invention relates to electric shavers wherein a pair of coacting oscillating cutter blades are provided that operate in such a manner with respect to each other that a slicing or shearing action will take place by the cutting blades, to insure an exceptionally close shave without scraping or irritating the skin.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a rotary shaver embodying a removable shaver head which may be readily and easily disconnected from the body portion of the shaver for cleaning or repairing.
A still further object of the invention is to improve generally the construction as shown and described in my co-pendi-ng patent application Serial No. 421,270, filed April 6, 1954 which has matured into Patent No. 2,799,925 granted July 23, 1957.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.

Figure 1 is a side elevational view of an electric shaver, constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a front elevational view thereof.
Figure 3 is a fragmental sectional view through the oscillating blade and end of the shaver head in which the blades are mounted.
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view through the cutting end of the electric shaver taken longitudinally of the body of the shaver.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken on line 6-6 of Figure 4.
Figure 7 is a sectional view taken on line 77 of Figure 4.
Figure 8 is a sectional view taken at right angles to Figure 3 of the drawings, approximately on line 8-8 of Figure 7.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the shaving apparatus forming the subject matter of the present invention, comprises a body 5 which is hollow and elongated, to provide a handle 6, the body 5 constituting a casing for the motor 7.
The body 5 is provided with a substantially flat surface 8 that is provided with an opening through which the power shaft 9 from the motor 7 extends.
The removable head of the shaver is indicated by the reference character 10 and comprises inclined side plates 11 spaced apart at their convergent extremities to form an open side and substantially triangular end plates 12, the side plates and triangular end plates being connected to a base 13 forming a part of the removable head, by means of the screws 14.
The triangular end plates 12 are provided with recessed portions in which the bearing arms 15 are mounted, and held in place by means of screws 16. Mounted between the bearing arms 15 is an oscillating tubular cutting blade 17 that is provided with grooves forming cutting edges 18 that extend across the outer surface of the tubular cutting blade 17, the cutting edges being disposed at oblique angles with respect to the bearing arms 15, as better shown by Figure 2 of the drawings.
The tubular cutting blade 17 is also provided with a wide opening 19, elongated longitudinally of the tubular cutting blade 17, through which the extension shaft 9' extends, the shaft 9' being removably connected to the end of shaft 9. Secured to the free end of the extension shaft 9' is a cam 20 that operates between the spaced flanges 21, in contact therewith. These flanges extend inwardly from the inner surface of the tubular cutting blade 17, as better shown by Figure 3 of the drawings.
Thus it will be seen that due to this construction, as the shafts 9 and 9 operate, the cam 20 will be rotated between the flanges 21, causing oscillation of the tubular cutting blade 17, within its bearings.
Mounted on and concentric with the tubular cutting blade 17, is a substantially tubular cutting blade 22 that is formed with a longitudinal cut out portion or open side extending throughout the length thereof, providing substantially straight cutting edges 23 on the opposite sides thereof that cooperate with the cutting edges 18 in providing a shearing action during the shaving operation.
Extending from the surface of the cutting member 22 directly opposite to the cutting edges 23, are spaced pins 24 between which the cam 25 operates, the cam 25 being secured to the power shaft 9, so that upon rotation of the extension shaft 9', the cam 25 rotating between the pins 24 will cause the cutting member 22 to reciprocate longitudinally of the tubular cutting blade 17.
Because of the oscillation of the tubular cutting blade 17 and the reciprocation of the substantially tubular cutting member 22 thereover, it will be seen that a slicing or shearing action takes place between the grooves forming the cutting edges 23 and cutting edges 18 to accomplish the shaving operation.
Electric current is supplied to the motor 7 through electric wires 26 which are plugged into the usual wall socket of a house wiring circuit.
What is claimed is:
An improved electric shaver comprising a hollow body, a motor and power shaft mounted within said body, a cutter head having an open side, secured to said body, an extension shaft removably connected to said power shaft within said cutter head, an oscillating tubular cutting blade having a-ngularly disposed grooves presenting cutting blades, mounted for oscillation within said cutter head, a tubular cutting member mounted on said tubular cutting blade for reciprocating movement, said tubular cutting member having longitudinally disposed cutting edges coopenating with the cutting blades of said tubular cutting blade, in shearing hair over which said shaver is moved, spaced cam flanges disposed within said tubular cutting blade, spaced pins extending laterally from the outer surface of said tubular cutting member, a cam mounted on said extension shaft, contacting with and operating between said flanges, a second cam mounted on said power shaft and operating between said pins in contact therewith, simultaneously oscillating said cutting blade in reciprocating. said tubular cutting member for creating a shearing action between said blade and said member.
