1 Claim. (Cl. 24-197) The invention herein has relation to a buckle of new and improved construction for detachably connecting end portions-of straps, or the like, which can be employed for various purposes, as, for example, as part of a belt, Suspenders, etc.

Ihe buckle of this invention is for detachably connecting end portions, such as denoted at and 11, of straps, or the like, and consists of a pair of fastener members, indicated 12 and 13, respectively, each of fiat rigid material which desirably can be sheet metal.

The fastener member 12, is of general Z-shape in cross section transversely of the buckle, and when viewed crosswise thereof, is constituted as a body 14, a tongue 15 and a neck or strip 16 between and connecting said body and tongue.

The body 14 of the fastener member 12 is as disclosed of rectangular configuration. First and second spaced, parallel, longitudinal, rectangular slots through said body are represented 17 and 18, respectively. The

17 and 18 are bounded at their opposite ends by opposite end portions, each designated 19, of the body 14, said rectangular slot 17 is bounded at an exterior side thereof by a cross bar 20 and at an interior side thereof by a cross bar 21 of said body, and said rectangular slot 18 is bounded at its exterior side by said cross bar 21 and at its interior side by a cross bar 22 of the body. 17 and 18 are of equal length and width, as are also the

20, 21 and 22. The exterior edge of the cross bar 20, together with the adjacent end edges of the opposite end portions 19, defines the exterior edge of the body 14, and the interior edge of the cross bar 22 defines the interior edge of said body.

The neck or strip 16 is rectangular and of uniform width. A rearward side edge of said neck or strip is integral with the interior edge of the cross bar 22 of the body 14 and the neck or strip extends forwardly from said body in substantially perpendicular relation thereto. As disclosed, the opposite ends of the neck or strip are in alinement transversely of the buckle with the interior edges of the opposite end portions, respectively, of the body 14, which interior edges also provide surfaces bounding the opposite ends of the

The tongue 15 of the fastener member 12 also is of rectangular configuration and of uniform width. An exterior side edge of said tongue is integral with a forward side edge of the neck or strip 16 and the tongue extends inteice riorly of the buckle in substantially perpendicular relation to said neck or strip and in parallel relation to the body 14. The opposite ends of said tongue are in alinement transversely of the buckle with the opposite ends, respectively, of the neck or strip 16, and the interior edge of the tongue is parallel with said neck or strip and the exterior edge of the body 14 of the fastener member 12.

As shown, the tongue 15 is of width somewhat less than is the body 14 of the fastener member 12, and the width of said tongue approaches a measurement representing three times the width of the neck or strip 16 of said fastener member. Each of the

The fastener member 13 is constituted as a body which as disclosed -i`s substantially a duplicate of the body 14 of thefastener member 12. First and second spaced, parallel, longitudinal, rectangular slots through said fastener member or body 13 are indicated 23 and 24, respectively'. The

23 and 24 are bounded at their opposite ends by opposite end portions, each represented 25, of the fastener member or body 13, said rectangular slot 23 is bounded at an exterior side thereof byl a cross bar` 26 and at an interior side thereof by cross bar 27 of said fastener member or body, and said rectangular slot 24 is bounded at its exterior side by said .cross bar 27 and at its interior side by a cross bar 28 of the frame member or body. 20, 21 and 22 of the body 14 of the fastener member 12. The exterior edge of the cross bar 26, together with the adjacent end edges of the opposite end portions 25, defines the exterior edge of the fastener member or body 13, and the interior edge of the cross bar 28, together with the adjacent end edges of said opposite end portions, delines the interior edge of said fastener member or body.

The strap end portion 10 extends interiorly over and in engaged relation with the forward surface of the cross bar 20, rearwardly through the rectangular slot 17, over and in engaged relation with the rearward surface of the cross bar 21, forwardly through the rectangular slot 18, over and in engaged relation with portions of the forward surface of the cross bar 22 and an exterior surface of the neck or strip 16, interiorly over and in engaged relation with the forward surface of the tongue 15, rearwardly over and in engaged relation with the interior edge of said tongue, exteriorly over and in engaged relation with the rearward surface of the tongue and over and in engaged relation with the rearward surface of said cross bar 22. As disclosed, the strap end portion 1t) extends exteriorly from the location of the cross bar 22 over and in engaged relation with the rearward surface of the cross bar 20. It could, however, pass forwardly through the rectangular slot 17 and over and in engaged relation with the forward surface of the cross bar 20, at the rear of the part of said strap end portion shown as engaged with said forward surface of said cross bar.

The strap end portion 11 extends interiorly over and in engaged relation with the forward surface of the cross bar 26, rearwardly through the rectangular slot 23 and exteriorly over and in engaged relation with the rearward surface of said cross bar 26. A loop of said strap end portion thus provided is secured to the fastener member or body 13 by appropriate means such as stitching indicated at 29.

When the fastener members of the buckle are to be detachably connected as in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, the tongue 15 and neck or strip 16 of the fastener member 12, with the strap end portion 10 applied thereto in the manner as hereinbefore set forth, will be inserted forwardly through the rectangular slot 24 in the fastener member 13 and moved to a position therein situating the meeting edges of the-body 14 and the neck or strip 16 and parts of the strap end portion. 10. at theopposite sides of said meetingVv edges, in adjacent relation tothe rearward surface of said fastener member. 13. The fas.- tener member 12 will then be rotated in said rectangular slot 24 to bring a part of the strap end portion 10 engaging the rearward surface of the tongue 15 into engaged relation with a part of the strap end portion 11 engaging the forward surface of the cross bar 26 of saidstrap end portion 11. When the fastener members are so relatively situated the neck or strip 16 and the parts of the strap end portion 10 thereon will be confined in the rectangular slot 24 in the fastener member 13 with said neck or strip in substantially perpendicular relation to said fastener member 13 and the fastener members themselves in adjacent substantially parallel relation.

12 and 13 apart will maintain the part of the strap end portion 10 extending across the rear surface of the tongue 15 in engaged relation with the part of the strap end portion 11 extending across the front surface of the cross bar 28, the bodies of said fastener members in parallel, adjacent relation and the neck or strip 16 and the fastener member 13 in perpendicular relation with each other. The length of the strap end portion 10 is readily and easily adjustable in a manner which will be apparent, and pendant parts of 4 the strap end portions will be invisible at the rearward side of the buckle when itis in use.

What is claimed is:

A buckle of at rigid material comprising a fastener member of general Z-shape constituted as a tirst at body, a tongue, and a neck between and connecting said rst body and tongue, the iirst bodyhaving spaced parallel iirst and second elongated slots therethrough bounded at their opposite ends by opposite end portions and dening spaced parallel iirst, second and third cross bars, said neck being integral with and extending from the irst body in substantially perpendicular relation thereto, said tongue extending forwardly in substantially perpendicular relation to the neck and in Vparallelrelation to said rst body, the fastener member being adapted to receive a strap portion extending over said rst cross bar, through the first elongated slot, under said second cross bar, through the second slot, and over said third cross bar, neck and tongue, and rearwardly under said tongue, neck and iirst body, and a second at body having an elongated slot therethrough, bounded at its opposite ends by opposite end portions and at its opposite sides by cross bars, said elongated slot in said second body being adapted to receive the tongue and neck of the fastener member and parts of said strap portion thereon and said neckwhen so received being in perpendicular relation to said second body and confined in the last mentioned elongated slot.
