United States Patent DolLY sHAPlNG DEVICE Lowell Burks, Louisville, Ky. Application october 7, 195s, seria: No. 539,078 s claims. (cl. zas-ss) My invention relates to a doily shaping device for shaping circular crocheted or lace doilies while drying after being washed.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a device for stretching and forming circular doilies to provide the same with radial folds and a scalloped edge for ornamental purposes.
Another object is to provide a device for the above purpose which will not damage the doilies, as by tearing, or snagging.
Still another object is to provide a device for such purposes which is simple in construction, easily taken apart and put together `and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
Other and subordinate objects, together with the precise nature of my invention, and the advantages thereof will become readily apparent when the following description and claims are read with reference to the drawing accompanying and forming part of this specification. and in which:
Figure l is a plan view, partly broken away, of my improved doily shaping device in a preferred embodiment thereof;
Figure 2 is a view in vertical transverse section taken on a line 2-2 of Figure l;
Figure 3 is a view in vertical transverse section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2; and,
Figure 4 is an exploded view illustrating parts of the device in perspective.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, the shaping de- Avice of my invention comprises a cylindrical, hollow hub member l having an upper at, closed end 3 for supporting the center portion of the doily shown in dotted lines at 5 in Figure l.
A plurality of fold-forming channel members 7 of channel shape in cross-section with the channels opening upwardly are provided on the hub member l to extend radially therefrom and are spaced equidistantly around said hub member.
A plurality of stretching and tuckng members 9 are provided for insertion in the fold-forming members 7 to tuck and stretch edge portions of the doily into the foldforming members 7.
'Ihe fold-forming members 7 are substantially triangular in outline with straight rear edges 11 to fit against the hub member 1, and a straight bottom 13 and arched upper edges 15 for imparting to the folds a substantially triangular shape longitudinally. The edge 15 flare outwardly and are curved in cross-section for the greater portion of their length to obviate tearing or snagging of portions of the doily during stretching.
The stretching and tuckng members 9 are also channel members and otherwise like the fold-forming members 7 with the exception presently seen. As best shown in Figure 3, the stretching and tuckng members 9 are provided with upper edges 17 like the edges l5 and which overlie said edges 15 when said members 9 are inserted in the Patented t Feb. 11,l 1958 fold-forming members 7 and are formed with such edges to clamp the doily. to the edges 15. The fold-forming members 7 are resilient for compression and expansion for a purpose presently seen and the stretching and tucking members 9 are also resilient for coaction with the members 7 to clamp the folds as at 19 formed by the members 7.
Means are provided for detachably attaching the foldforming members 7 to the hub member 1 comprising circumferentially spaced keyholes 21 in said member 1 having upper wide portions 23 and lower narrow portions 25. The fold-forming sections 7 are provided on their rear edges with pairs of right-angled lugs 27 insertable in the wider portions of the slots 21 while said members are expanded for movement downwardly, with the members 7 compressed, into the narrow portions 25 to frictionally interlock with said portions 25 under expansion of said members 7.
Means is provided for clamping the center portion 29 of the doily 5 against the upper end 3 of the hub member l. This means comprises a clamping disk 31 attachable to said end 3 in overlying relation to said portion 29 by a screw 33 extended axially through the disk 31 into a center opening 35 in said end 3. As best shown in Figure 2, the clamping disk 31 is of larger diameter than the hub member 1 so that it will overlie the edges 17 of the stretching and tuckng members 9 to act as a holddown member for retaining said members 9 in downwardly inserted position in the fold-forming members 7.
Referring now to the use and operation of the device, doilies 5 with which my device is concerned are provided with a small center hole, as at 37, either in a centerpiece around which the remainder of the doily is crocheted, or one around which the entire doily is crocheted. In applying a doily to my device, its center portion is imposed on the closed end 3 of the hub member 1 and the clamping disk 31 is applied over the center portion 29 of the doily by inserting the screw 33 through the disk 31, the hole 37 in the doily 5 and the hole 35 in said end 3. The edge portion of the doily 5 is then manually tucked part-way into the fold-forming members 7. Then the stretching and tucking members are inserted in said members 7 to stretch the edge portion of the doily 5 downwardly, as at 39, and form folds in said edge portion grouped radially around the center portion 29 and which extend downwardly from the center portion and are substantially triangular longitudinally. These folds impart a scalloped pattern to the edge portion of the doily so that when the doily dries on the device the folded and scalloped edge portion will impart to the doily an ornamental appearance.
By compressing the fold-forming members 7, the lugs 27 may be freed from engagement with the narrow portions of the openings 21 and moved upwardly into the wider portions 23 to be withdrawn out of the slots 21 for detachment of said members 7 so that with the stretching and tuckng members 9 removed out of said members 7, and the clamping disk 31 detached, the parts of the device may be arranged in a compact bundle for storage, if desired.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A device for stretching and forming circular doilies to provide the same with radial folds and a scalloped edge comprising an elongated cylindrical hub member having an upper end for supporting the center portion of a doily, fold-forming channel members rigidly attached to said hub member in upwardly opening radial position and extending from end to end of said hub member to receive edge portions of a doily and form deep tucks thereinand stretching and manipulative tucking members for insertion in the forming members to tuck and stretch said edge portions into the fold-forming members.
2. A device as in claim 1, said fold-forming members being substantially triangular in outline with a straight rear edge at the hub member, and a straight bottom and arched upper edges for imparting to the folds a substantially triangular shape longitudinally.

A device as in claim 1, said hub member being hollow and provided with circumferentially spaced keyhole slots therein, said fold-forming members being resilient for compression and expansion and having straight rear edges fitting against said hub member and provided With opposite right-angled prongs insertable in the Wider portions of said slots when the fold-forming members are expanded and into the narrower portions ofthe slots When said forming members are compressed to interlock said slots and detachably attach said forming members to said hub member.
4. A deviceas in claim l, said fold-forming members being substantially triangular in outline With straight bottoms and arched upper edges for imparting to the folds a substantially triangular shape longitudinally, said upper edges being outwardly aring and convex to prevent tearing of the doily while it is being stretched.
5. A device as in claim 1, said tucking and stretching members frictionally fitting in the folds and being resilient to coact with the fold-forming members to clamp the folds in the fold-forming members.
6. A device as in claim l, and a member attachable to said closed end to clamp the center portion of a doily to said end.
7. A device as in claim 4, said stretching and tucking members being substantially triangular in outline to tit in the foid-forming members.
8. A device as in claim 6, said last-named member comprising aclamping disk overlying the tucking and forming members to hold the same in place.`
