CHARLES MURDOGK, OF NEW ROCHELLE, NEW YORK.
Fl R E-ESCAPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 282,212, dated July 31, 1883.
Application filed February 24, 1883. (No model.)
Ton/M whom/ it may concern.-
Be it known that I,CHARLES MURDOCK, of New Rochelle, in the county of Westchester and State of NewYork, have invented a new and Improved Fire-Escape, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists of a new and improved portable fire-eseape, which may be quickly and easily put in position for use, which will afford safe and easydescent from the window of a burning building to the ground or pavement, and which will occupy small space when not in use. p
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corsponding parts in all the figures. I
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating themanner of using my new and improved fire-escape. Fig. 2is a detailed sectional view, showing the loop or holder to which the bodystrap is to be attached; and Fig. 3 is a pen spective view of the box containing the reel on which the fire-escape is to be wound when not in use. A represents an iron bracket boltedto the pulleystile of the window-casing A. This bracket is provided with the eye a, in which the hook I) of the pulley Bis adapted tobe placed. Overthe pulley B is placed the escape-rope O, which is .double or endless, and is of a length to reach from the bracket to the ground or pavement; and this rope is provided with the slotted head D, attached to the ends of the rope by means of the eye h h, in or to which head the body-strap E is placed or at tached, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
F represents the box adapted for holding the escape when not in use, andthis box is provided with thereel G, on which the escape-rope may be wound, and for convenience in winding the rope upon the reel I provide the axis of thereel with the hook d, to which the lower end of the rope is to be attached, and I provide the reel outside of the box with the crank f for turning the reel. The box will body-strap will be at the outside of the coil,
in convenient position for the pulley to be readily taken out of the box and attached to the eye a of the bracket.
In using the escape, the pulley B having been attached to the bracket A by hookb, as
described, the rope remaining in the box will then be drawn off from the reel. and thrown out of the window. The person to descend will then place himself upon the window-sill and buckle the body-strapE around his body under the arms. vHe will then grasp the opposite rope-that is, the rope opposite to that to which the body-strap is attached-and then slide off from the window-sill, which he can do with perfect confidence, since by holding upon the rope with his hands he can regulate his speed-of descent with great ease, and can lower himself to the ground or pavement with perfect safety.
Constructed in this manner, it will be seen that the escape is not only safe and reliable, but is cheap, can be quickly put in place for use, is always at hand, and does not materially deface the wall of the building.
D, carrying the body-strap E, as shown and.
described, for the purpose specified.
CHARLES MURDOOK.
