Description

Feb. 4, 1958 C.'E. HOLLAND 2,s22,102
NURSING BOTTLE Filed Aug. 5, 1954 are United tates NURSING BOTTLE Charles Edward Holland, Belmont, Mass.
Application August 5, 1954, Serial No. 447,941
1 Claim. (Cl. 215-11) This invention relates to nursing bottles and in particular to the type of bottle having a screw cap for retaining the nipple.
A number of bottles are now on the market of the so-called wide mouth type. On this type of bottle the mouth is of approximately the same diameter as the bottle and the nipple extends across the entire month. The rim of the nipple is ordinarily secured by a screw cap consisting of a ring which is internally threaded and is screwed on to the upper rim of the bottle. It has been found that these nipples secured in the conventional manner tend to pull out from under the ring if the nipple is pulled to one side. The chief object of this invention is to provide a connection between the nipple and the bottle which produces a positive clamping action on the rim of the nipple so that it cannot be pulled away from under the ring.
Another object is to provide a nipple connection which is particularly useful on the unbreakable plastic type of bottle. These bottles are somewhat more difiicult to conmeet the nipple to as they are not as dimensionally stable as glass bottles and tend to become distorted and change their dimensions when repeatedly sterilized, or when heated. The connection here shown is intended to give a firm grip on the nipple even when the bottle is somewhat distorted.
In the drawings illustrating the invention:
Fig. 1 is a side view of the bottle with the nipple attached;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical cross-section, partly broken away, showing the nipple and bottle connection;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the nipple;
Fig. 4 is a view of the under side of the nipple; and Fig. 5 is a view of the under side of the connecting ring.
2,822,102 Patented Feb. 4, 1958 The bottle 10 is of generally cylindrical shape and is preferably made of an unbreakable, somewhat flexible plastic which will withstand the heat of sterilizing. The bottle has an externally threaded portion 11 to which an internally threaded ring 12 is screwed in the usual manner. The ring 12 has an inwardly extending flange 13 which extends over the upper edge of the bottle and the rim 15 of the nipple 14.
The upper edge 16 of the bottle is bevelled to form a a sharp lip 17 around the inner part of the upper rim. The rim 15 of the nipple has a groove 18 on the under side into which the edge 17 of the bottle is fitted when the nipple is applied. The nipple rim also has a circumferential groove 19 on the upper side. The ring 12 has a downwardly projecting bead 20 which engages in the groove 19. The nipple is thus securely clamped between the sharp edge 17 and the flange 20 of the ring. The sharp edge bites into the soft rubber of the nipple. The head 20 also tends to push the outer part of the rubber rim down around the bevelled edge of the bottle. This connection prevents the rim of the nipple from being dislodged by a sidewise pull. To allow for the entry of air into the bottle, vents are provided in the form of radial grooves 21 on the under side of the rim of the nipple.
I claim:
A nursing bottle and nipple combination comprising: a bottle having an open top, an externally threaded margin, and an upper edge bevelled to slope downward toward the outside of the bottle and to form a relatively sharp, upwardly projecting lip; a nipple of elastic material having a rim with upper and under sides extending over said upper edge, said rim having on its under side a first circumferential groove in which said lip is received, and, on its upper side, a second circumferential groove entirely overlying and in vertical alignment with the first groove, and a ring having an internally threaded portion engaged with said margin, and a flange extending over said upper side, said flange having a bead engaged with said second groove and overlying and aligned with said lip, the bead and the lip being disposed to clamp and compress between them the material of the nipple lying between said grooves.
