GERRONE w. BUnNs, oF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
` Clem-,CUTTER SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 282,155, dated July 31, 188.3. Application filed September i5, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom tmc/,y concern:
Be it known that. I, GERRONE W. BURNS, of the cityof Indianapolis, county of Marion, i and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and `useful Improvements in Cigar-Cutters, of which the following is a specification. `The object ofV my said invention is to produce a cigar-cutter in which the cuttingknives shall move simultaneously toward or from each other, whereby the cigar may be cut from both sides toward the center. This object is accomplished by mounting the knives in slides so arranged that the cuttingedges shall pass close tov each other during the process of cutting the cigar, and shall be operated by various bars and levers connected together, as will be hereinafter more particularly described.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar letters of `reference indicate similar parts, Figure l is a perspective view of a cutter embodying my said invention; Fig. 2, an end elevation of the same; Fig. 3, alongitudi-` nal vertical section thereof; and Fig. 4, aview similar to Fig. 2, except that the various parts are in the position they occupy after the cutter has been operated.
In said drawings, the portions marked A represent the base or block on which the mechanism of my improved cutter is mounted; B, the frame-work of said mechanism;y C D the sliding cutter-knives; E F G H I, a series of levers, links, and bars by which one of said knives is operated; and J, a plungerby which the operating force is applied to the mechanism. e -The base or block should have a groove, c,
i therein, as shown,to receive and guide the 4'ojcigar, and a graduated scale, af, or a suitable gage, by which the length of thecigarzi-inayube `j determined. e
The frame-work `B is securelyattached to the base A,bymeans of screws b, or otherwise,
in such position that when the knives are apart, as shown in Figs; l, 2, and 3,` a`r cigar l placed in the groove c may be passed freely between said knives. Said frame-work coni tains proper slides `and bearings for the mech 5o anism of the cutter, as shown.
The knives G and D are each mounted in slides in the frame B,where theyare secured, either by screws c c d, as shown, or some other suitable fastening devices, in such relation that the edges thereof will pass 'close to each other as they are forced up and down. The knife C is operated directly by the plunger J, to which it is connected by a screw or pivot, j. The knife-D is operated by the system of levers, connecting rods, and links shown.
.A lever, F, is connected to the frame B by a pivot, f. A-link, E, connects this to the knife D, pivots e and e being the means of attachmenti A lever, G, is pivoted to the knife C or plunger J, preferably by the same pivot that connects said knife and plunger together, and is connected by a link, I, to the frame B, said link being pivoted to said frame by the pivot t', and to said lever by the pivot g. A o connecting-bar, H, connects the two levers F and G, being pivoted to the same by pivots f and g, thus establishing a connection between the two knives, whichcauses them to approach or recede from each other uniformly. 75
The plunger J is an ordinary device, used frequently inhand-stamps and such like articles. It is commonly forced downwardly by pressure or a blow from the hand, and thrown back` into position for further use by the coiled 8o spring J which surroundsits shank.
The operation of my improved cutter may be recapitulated as follows: A newly-made cigar is laid in the groove in thebase A, with the end which is to be squared extending through between the knives. The plunger J is then forced down, carrying with it the knife C, and through the series of levers, rods, &c., forcing up the knife D. These knives pass each other, cutting off the end :of the cigar, the center of said cigar, owing to the simultaneous movement of the knives, being the part last severed. The spring J forces the mechanism back into position for further use. i
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the lower cutting-knife, the lever F, pivoted to the frame, andl coni nected to said knife at one end and to the con- Ioo neeting-bar H at the other, said eonneotinghand and seal, at Indianapolis, Indiana, this bar, theA lever Gr, connected to the frame by' 30th day of August, A. D.V 1882. means of the link I at one end, to the upper knife at the other, and to the Connecting-'bar GERRONR W. BURNS. [L sq 5 at an intermediate point,'said upper knife,
and the plunger or lever by which the Whole In presence 0fis actuated, substantially as set forth. C. BRADFORD,
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my E. WV. BRADFORD.
