. KNIFE-CLEANING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 281,885, dated July 24, 1883.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HENRY DIN- HAM J QNES, a citizen of England, residing at BriXton, in the county of Surrey, England, have invented anew or Improved Knife-0leaning Machine, (for which I have obtained patcuts in Great Britain, No. 552, dated February 4, 1882, and in France, No. 150, 340, dated July 27, 1882,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in knife-scouring machines; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 rep resents a side view of my improved device, and Fig. 2 a horizontal section of the same.
A A indicate two disks of steel or other elastic material, and having radial arms a a. Said disks are of a slightly concavo-conveX form at their central portions, and are mounted, with their concave faces adjoining, upon a shaft having bearings in a suitable frame. Upon the inner faces of said disks are secured two disks, B B, of leather or equivalent material. Said leather disks are secured to the steel disks by means of rivets b, which pass through both the steel and leather disks, and at a point within the concavo-convex portion of the disks, as shown in Fig. 2, whereby they are kept free from contact with the knife in the operation of cleaning. The two disks of leather are con stantly pressed toward each other by means of the radial arms a a, formed of elastic metal, as before described andthe disks A A are so arranged relatively to each other that each radial arm a shall be opposite the space be tween two radial arms a a and vice versa, whereby the two leather disks are firmly and evenly pressed together throughout their entire peripheries. In order .to save material,
the two leather disks may, if desired, be out out at their centers, as shown in Fig. 2. The
shaft carrying the disks is made hollow, and 5 provided with an opening, P, through which is introduced the polishing material, said opening having a suitable stopper or plug. The
shaft is also provided with one or more perforations, through which the powder escapes to the inner faces of the scouring-disks as the shaft is rotated by means of a crank or otherwise. To the frame in which the shaft has its bearings is secured an arm, D, which projects out to the periphery of the disks, and is bent, as shown, to serve as a support for the knife being cleaned.
The operation of my devicewill be readily understood. The polishing powder having been placed in the hollow shaft, the knife to be cleaned is inserted between the two leather disks, and the disks are then rapidly rotated. The radial spring-arms, arranged as before described, press the peripheries of the disks B B firmly and evenly together, and the knife, be-
ing thrust in and out between the rapidly-rotating disks, is quickly and thoroughly cleaned and polished.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 7 In combination with the elastic disks A A, mounted upon a shaft, and having radial springarms a a, said disks being so arranged relatively to each other that the radial arms shall alternate, as described, the scouring-disks B B, of leather or equivalent material, secured to the inner faces of said disks A A, the whole constructed and arranged substantially as de scribed.
