BASKET Filed July 3l, 1956 36 JCurZa? ATTORI-JEYS United States Patent O BASKET Joseph D. Cudd, Boise, Idaho Application July 31, 1956, Seal No. 601,258
2 Claims. (Cl. 150-28) The present invention relates to baskets, and more particularly to containers of the type commonly used for carrying knitting, crocheting, sewing, and the like.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a basket which can be carried in a closed condition and supported in a stationary open condition for use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a basket having the characteristics described above having a cloth body portion forming the main container.
A further object of the invention is to provide a basket having a framework adapted to support the basket in an open position including handle portions for carrying the bag when in a closed position.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a basket structure of the class described having an interchangeable cloth container body portion suspended therefrom.
Another object of the invention is to provide a basket of the class described above which is inexpensive to manufacture, simple to use, and durable in service.
Other objects and advantages will become -apparent in the following specification when considered in the light of the attached drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary end elevation of the invention with parts broken away and in section for convenience of illustration.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical crosssecton taken along the line 3-3 of Figure 2, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary horizontal crosssection taken along the line 4 4 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the several figures, the reference character indicates generally a basket constructed in accordance with the teachings of the invention.
The basket 10 includes a pair of handle members 11 and 12, and a pair of supports 13 and 14 extend between the handle structures 11 and 12 at opposite ends thereof. A cloth container 15 is suspended from the handles 11 and 12 and is positioned between the supports 13 and 14.
Each of the handle members 11 and 12 are identical and include an elongated flat body portion 16 having a centrally positioned longitudinally extending hand opening slot 17 formed therein. The opposite ends of the body portion 16 are provided with spaced recesses 18 and 19 delineating a tongue 20 therebetween. The tongue 20 is provided with a V-shaped notch 21 extending therein from the outer end thereof to provide the tongue 20 with a degree of resiliency for reasons to be assigned. The terminal ends 22 and 23 of the tongue 20 on opposite sides of the V-shaped notch 21 are provided with lateral oppositely extending detent portions 24 and 25, as best seen in Figure 2.
A pair of opposed bars 26 and 27 extend inwardly from the opposite lower outer end portions of the body 16 in parallel spaced relation therebelow. The bars Z6 and 27 terminate medially of the body portion 16 in spaced relation to provide a passage 28 therebetween.
ICC
Each of the support members 13 and 14 are identical to each other and comprise a pair of identical Lshaped members 29 and 30. Each of the Lshaped members 29 and 30 of each of the frame members 13 and 14 are provided with an upstanding leg portion 31 having a generally upright slot 32 formed in the upper end thereof which is adapted to engage over the tongue 20 and behind the detents 24 and 25, as best illustrated in Figure 2.
The Lshaped members 29 and 30 are each provided with a generally horizontal leg 33 having the inner terminal end thereof provided with a reduced end portion 34. The reduced end portion 34 of the Lshaped mernber 29 and the reduced end portion 34 of the Lshaped member 30 are adapted to overlie each other, as illustrated in Figure 4, and are pivotally secured together by means of a pivot bolt 35 extending therethrough and secured in place by a thumb nut 36, or rivet or other types of fasteners.
The cloth container 15 has a pair of opposed reverted top edges 37 and 38 which are hemmed as at 39 and 40 to provide horizontally extending tubular portions 41. The tubular portions 41 are of a size to engage over the bars 26 and 27, as illustrated in Figure 2, to support the container 15 from the handles 11 and 12. The opening 28 between the bars 26 and 27 permits the container 15 to be removed from the bars 26 and 27 when it is desired to wash the container 15 or replace it.
In the use and operation of the invention, the handles 11 and 12 provide means for opening and closing the basket 10, and when in closed relation provide means for carrying the basket 10. The supports 13 and 14 with the basket 10 in open position has the horizontal portions 33 thereof in engagement with a supporting surface so as to hold the handles 11 and 12 in spaced apart relation, as illustrated in Figure 1. In this position the container 15 is open and the contents thereof may be used as desired.
It should be noted that the handles 11 and 12 are identical in construction in every respect and the supports 13 and 14 are each formed from a pair of identical L- shaped members 29 and 30 so that the framework of the basket 10 comprises four Lshaped members all identical, and two handle members identical to each other.
Having thus described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it should be understood that numerous struetural modifications and adaptations may be resorted to `without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A basket comprising a pair of handles, a cloth container detachably secured to said handles and depending therefrom, and means pivotally joining said handles and adapted to support said handles in spaced relation, said last named means comprising a pair of oppositely positioned Lshaped members, means pivotally securing the adjacent ends of said Lshaped members together, and means on said handles cooperating with means on the ends of said Lshaped members opposite said pivot for securing said Lshaped members to said handles.
2. A device as claimed in claim l wherein the means on said handles for securing said Lshaped members thereto comprises a resilient tongue having oppositely extending detents formed thereon over which said Lshaped member is adapted to engage.
