Description

Dec. 31, 1957 F/G/B H. w. HEIN' SINGLE VANE PUMP Filed Feb. a, 1955 I //vv/v 70/? HA HOLD n4 HEl/V ATfiR/VEY United States.
SINGLE VANE PUMP Harold W. Hein, Chicago, Ill., assignor to International Harvester Company, a corporation of New Jersey Application February 8, 1955, Serial No. 486,814
7 Claims. (Cl. 103-136) This invention relates to fluid pumps. More specifically, this invention relates to a vane type of fluid pump having a single vane. It is a primary object of this invention to provide an improved and simplified vane type fluid pump.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide an improved and single vane pump having certain valve passages provided in the pump rotor and cooperating with certain passages and valves provided in cylindrical valve'members disposed on opposite sides of said rotor.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a vane type of pump having a single vane adapted to provide increased pumping efliciency and reduce maintenance time, by the utilization of simplified inlet and outlet valves formed in a pump rotor and adjacent portions of a pump casing.
These and further objects will become more readily apparent from a reading of the specification when examined in connection with the accompanying sheet of drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view through a single vane fluid pump;
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view through a single vane pump taken substantially along the line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view substantially taken along the line 33 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line 4-4 of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 55 of Figure 1; and
Figure 6 is a cross-sectional view through an inletvalve of a fluid pump taken along the line 6-6 of Figure 1.
A single vane fluid pump is generally designated by the reference character 10. The pump 10 comprises a casing 11 having a cylindrical casing portion 12. Opposite ends of the cylindrical casing portion 12 are connected to end casing portions or valve housings 13 and 14. The valve housings 13 and 14 are inter-changeable, this feature being particularly important from the standpoint of simplification, cost, and maintenance. The valve housings 13 and 14 are suitably connected together and to the casing portion 12 by means of a plurality of bolts 15. Each of the valve housings 13 and 14 is provided with a base portion 16, the said base portions 16 cooperating to provide a substantial support for the pump 10.
The casing portion 12 defines an annular chamber 17 in which a rotor 18 is positioned. As clearly shown in the drawings, the rotor 18 is positioned off-center or eccentrically with respect to the axis of the chamber 17, this feature being conventional in vane type pumps. The rotor 18 is provided with a recess 19 in which a vane 20 is slidably or reciprocally positioned. The vane 20 may be made of graphite or other suitable material, the same being freely reciprocal in the recess 19 so that the outer edge of the vane 20 may sweep the interior surface of the casing portion 12 in conventional manner.
ice
. 2 A cylindrical inlet valve 21 projects axially outwardl from one side of the rotor 18. Likewise, a cylindrical outlet valve 22 projects outwardly from the opposite side of the rotor 18. The inlet and outlet valves 21 and 22 are respectively suitably journalled in bores 23 and 24 provided in the casing portions 13 and 14. A shaft 25 is connected to the inlet valve member 21, the said shaft being suitably journalled in a bearing 26 and being connected to a suitable source of power (not shown). A stub shaft 27 is connected to the outlet valve 22 and is suitably journalled in a bearing 28carried on the housing 14.
The housing 13 is provided with a semi-cylindrical inlet passage 29, the said passage being separated at its ends by a projection 30 forming part of the housing 13, the said projection 30 having its innermost portion in engagement with the inlet valve member 21. The inlet passage 29 is in communication with an inlet connection 31. An inlet slot 32 is provided on the face of the rotor 18 immediately adjacent the vane 20. The inlet slot 32 is in communication with a bore 33 extending laterally with respect to the axis of the rotor 18. A bore 34 is in communication with the bore 33, the said bore 34 extending axially within the rotor 18. The bore 34 is in communication with an inlet passage 35 formed in the valve member 21, the said inlet passage 35 being in communication with the semi-cylindrical passage 29.
A semi-cylindrical outlet passage 36 is formed in the outlet valve 22. By the term semi-cylindrical in connection with the passages is meant substantially cylin- 'drical, or less than cylindrical. The passage 36 has its ends terminating at a projection 37 formed in the casing portion 14, the said projection 37 having a surface in engagement with the outlet valve 22. Thus, as best shown in Figures 2 and 6, the projections 30 and 37 are in relatively opposed relation. An outlet connection 38 is formed on the casing portion 14. An outlet slot 39 is formed in the rotor 18 immediately adjacent the vane 20. The outlet slot 39 is in communication with a bore 40 extending laterally within the rotor 18. The bore 40 is in communication with a bore 41 extending axially in the rotor 18, the said bore 41 also being in communication with an outlet passage 42 formed in the valve member 22. The passage 42 is in communication with the semi-cylindrical outlet passage 36, as best shown in Figures 1 and 2.
In operation, the rotor 18 is driven in a clockwise direction. Since the valves 21 and 22 are identical, however, the rotor can be driven in clockwise or counterclockwise direction depending which of the connections 31 and 38 are designated as the inlet and outlet connec-.
tions. As the rotor 18 moves in clockwise manner fluid is drawn through the inlet connection 31 into the semicylindrical inlet passage 29 through the inlet passage 35 and enters the chamber 17 through the slot 32. Simultaneously, during the rotation, the vane 20 is elfective to discharge fluid within the chamber 17 through the slot 39, bores 40, 41 and passage 42 into the outlet passage 36 and from there out through the outlet connection 38. It can be seen that when the vane 20, during rotation, is in its completely retracted position within the slot 19, the said vane 28 is in what may be called a twelve oclock position. In this position the inlet passage 35 is covered by means of the projection 30 and at this point no fluid flows through the chamber 17 from the inlet connection 31. Likewise, in the twelve oclock position of the vane 20 the bore 41 is covered by the projection 37 and at this point no discharge of fluid from the chamber 17 takes place since the vane is in a nonfunction point or position. As the vane, however, is
moved in clockwise manner from the twelve oclock' position the passages 35 and 42 are moved away with re- 3 spect to the projections 30 and 37 so that the pumping action again takes place.
Thus it can be seen that an improved vane pump has been disclosed, the pump being simple in design and op eration with both of the outlet valve and inlet valve members being interchangeable in maintenance. Furthermore a single vane is provided, this provision greatly reducing the replacement of. vanes during operation. A simplified and yet very effective pump is thus provided. It is therefore apparent that the objects. of the invention have been fully achieved butthat, changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as disclosed or, the scope thereof as defined. in the appended claims.
