3 Claims. ((11. 15-248) This invention relates to a paint feeder and guard, particularly for roller type paint applicators, in which the paint is fed ontoa roller'which is then manually moved over a wall surface to transfer the paint from the roller t the wall.
An object of my invention is to provide a novel paint feeder and guard which will effectively prevent the paint from splattering off of the roller during the painting process, and also which will effectively trap or catch the paint in a gutter so that the paint will not drip onto the Another object of my invention is to provide a novel paint feeder and guard of the character stated, in which paint is effectively fed onto the roller from a trough incorporated with the guard.
Still another object is to provide a novel paint feeder and guard of the character stated, which can be quickly and easily secured to a roller type applicator, and when in this position will interfere with the normal use of the applicator.
Still another object is to provide a novel paint feeder and guard of the character stated, which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and effective in operation.
Other objects, advantages and features of invention may appear from the accompanying drawing, the subjoined detailed description and the appended claims.

Figure 5 is a side elevation of a slightly modified form of paint feeder and guard.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a roller or applicator which is cylindrical in form and has a felted or padded surface over which the paint is spread, and this surface in turn transfers the paint to a wall; all of this is usual and well known in the art. A handle 2 is provided for the roller 1 and the roller is journaled on this handle and is free to rotate. As thus far described the paint applicator is of the usual and well known type and consists of an efiective tool for spreading paint on a Wall. However, unless great care is taken the paint will drip off of the roller and onto the floor, and will also splatter paint as the roller moves over the wall surface. To prevent this splattering of paint, and also the possible dripping, I provide a guard 3 which consists essentially of an elongated trough of somewhat greater length than the roller 1. The guard 3 is of a width somewhat less than the diameter of the roller 1 and is so positioned that the edges of the guard will not strike the wall as the roller is moved back and forth during the operation of spreading the paint. Bothside edgcs..8.-8 of the end gates are shaped to fit mounted at each end. of' the trough 3, so that the end gates may be adjusted longitudinally of the trough 3' to accommodate rollers 1 of greater or lesser length. The end gates 6 and 7 are each provided with a trough or gutter 9 at the upper edge thereof, so that the end gate may also act to catch any dripping or paint which might tend to flow out of the ends of the trough 3. A central channel 10 is provided on the bottom of the trough 3 and extends substantially the lengh of this trough. The channel 10 is provided 0 distribute paint throughout the length of the roller 1, and this channel is quite narrow so that an adequate but not an excessive amount of paint will flow therethrough. Paint is fed to the channel 10 through the pipe 11 which extends into the channel. Paint is fed through pipe 11 by suitable pressure means, such as the rubber bulb 12. The paint feeder and guard is mounted on the handle 2 and below the roller 1 by means of a clamp 13 which encircles the handle 2 and extends over each side of the trough 3 so that the trough 3 can be adjusted within the clamp 13. A plurality of bolts 14 extend through the bracket 13 for the purpose of holding this bracket in position. The bracket 13 is provided with integral fingers 15-15 which project outwardly from the upper end thereof and which engage each side of the trough 3.
In the modified form of my invention, shown in Figure 5, the paint roller 16 has the paint fed directly to the center of the roller through the hollow handle or pipe 17. The trough 18 is substantially identical to the construction of the trough 3, previously described, and the trough is attached to the handle or pipe 17 by the bracket 19 which is attached to the handle 17 by the screws 20, or the like. The bracket 19 is constructed to grip the sides of the trough 18 in the same manner as previously described for the bracket 13.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A paint feeder and guard attachment for roller applicators of the type having a cylindrical roller and a handle member journaling said roller, said attachment comprising an elongated trough member for partially receiving said roller in parallel operational relationship, a bracket on said trough member and means for removably securing said bracket on said handle to insure the above relationship, a fluid retaining gutter on each side edge of said trough member, a pair of opposite end walls on said trough member and means slidably mounting said end walls for adjustment longitudinally of the trough member to accommodate rollers of varying lengths, said end walls each having a fluid retaining gutter cooperating with the gutters on said trough member to form a continuous peripheral gutter.
2. A paint feeder and guard attachment for roller applicators of the type having a cylindrical roller and a handle member journaling said roller, said attachment comprising an elongated trough member for partially receiving said roller in parallel operational relationship, a bracket on said trough member and means for removably securing said bracket on said handle to insure the above relationship, a fluid retaining gutter on each side edge of said trough member, a pair of opposite end walls on said trough member and means slidably mounting said end walls for adjustment longitudinally of the trough member to accommodate rollers of varying lengths, said end walls each having a fluid retaining gutter cooperating with the gutters on said trough member to form a continuous peripheral gutter, said trough member having a longitudinally extending fluid distribution channel in the 1 bottom thereof, said channel opening into said trough member, and a fluid supply conduit extending into said channel.
3. A paint feeder and guard attachment for roller applicators of the type having a cylindrical roller and a handle member journaling said roller, said attachment comprising an elongated trough member for partially receiving said roller in parallel operational relationship, a bracket on said trough member and means for removably securing said bracket on said handle to insure the above relationship, said bracket including fingers thereon, said fingers gripping the sides of the trough to mount said trough on the handle, a fluid retaining gutter on each side edge of said trough member, a pair of opposite end walls on said trough member and means slidably mounting said end Walls for adjustment longitudinally of the trough member to accommodate rollers of varying lengths, said end walls each having a fluid retaining gutter cooperating with the gutters on said trough member to form a continuous peripheral gutter.
