DECORATIVE SHIELD FOR FINGER'IiAIL Filed Jan. 7, 1955 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR CHARLES A. KLUMP ATTORNEY United States Patent DECORATIVE SHIELD FOR FINGER NAIL Charles A. Klump, Norwood, Ohio Application January 7, 1955, Serial No. 480,463
1 Claim. (Cl. 13273) The present invention relates to decoration for the finger nails and it provides a completely new shield for that purpose.
In accordance with a prior-art practice which is going into extensive vogue, various colored liquid polishes are manually applied to suit the taste of the user. This is a laborious and time-consuming operation and although there is now a wide range of color selection, the decoration is of the one-color type. It is an object of the present invention to provide an extirely new product which satisfies this preference and fashion in such a manner that the desired decoration may be accomplished very rapidly and easily.
Another fundamental object of the invention is to provide a shield which affords a wide and indeed unlimited variety of decorative themes in multi-colored patterns.
For a detailed understanding of the present invention, and an appreciation of the advantages and capabilities thereof, reference is made to the following description of the accompanying drawings in which there are shown preferred and alternative embodiments which are illustrative of the invention.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of miladys hand showing five specimens of the preferred embodiment of my novel decorative finger nail shield in position as worn;
Figs. 2 and 3 are cross-sectional views taken on section lines 2--2 and 3-3, respectively, and looking in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. 4 is a top view of the decorative finger nail shield as it would appear on display for sale as a unit;
Fig. 5 is a top plan view of a Womans hand showing, in place as worn, a plurality of my novel decorative finger nail shields in accordance with an alternative embodiment of the invention;
Figs. 6 and 7 are, respectively, cross-sectional views taken along the section lines 6-6 and 77 of Fig. 5.
Coming now to the specific description of the invention, it contemplates the manufacture, sale, and use of unitary decorative shields to be applied to the finger nail by the user. These shields can be packaged and sold in sets and a wide and indeed unlimited variety of decorative themes may be offered in accordance with the style of the designer and the choice of the user.
In Fig. 1 there is shown a ladys hand 10 having thumb 11, and fingers 12, 13, 14, and 15. On each finger nail there is placed a decorative shield such as that numbered 21.
Referring now to Fig. 2, the reference numeral 13 designates the anatomy of the finger, having a finger nail 16. My shield comprises a main body member 18, which may be made of fibre or plastic or any suitable material, preferably of a flexible nature. The body member is provided on its underside with a layer or adhesive 17, to the end that the protective shield may be permanently but removably afiixed, through simple pressure, by the user.
It will be seen that the body member is generally of an oval shape, with a bottom edge of pronounced curvature and smooth side edges of gradual curvature, designed to conform to the cuticle. It may be formed with whatever top edge is in vogue. That shown is formed with the sharp but rounded tip which is now and for some time has been the prevailing fashion in trimming fingernails. Additionally, the body member is curvilinear or bowed in section so that it may conveniently conform to the finger nail. It will be understood that in the practice of my invention various dimensional selections Will be made available on the market to suit the various general types and sizes of hands.
The particular non-homogeneous decorative design herein comprises a succession of black and white bars 19 and 24 of contrasting colors. These colors may be painted or desposited on or disposed or otherwise placed on the body member 18.
Referring now to Figs. 5, 6, and 7, which bear identical reference numerals to designate identical elements, this alternate embodiment comprises a decal having the geometrical attributes described in connection with the preferred embodiment. In this case the reference numeral 20 designates that portion of the decal which is permanently affixed to the finger nail, inclusive of adhesive, and. 20 is provided With suitable overlying decorative matter. The reference numeral 22 designates the paper or fibrous removable portion of the decal, which is peeled off by the user as indicated at 23 after the user has affixed the shield by moistening element 20, and impressing it on the finger nail 16. A checker-board decorative theme is here shown as illustrative of one of the Wide variety of decorations which may be employed.
Having shown and described my invention, I claim:
The method of decorating a finger nail which comprises the steps of: First, forming an adhesively-backed bowed shield to conform to a finger nail in edge and section; Second, conforming and aflixing a contrasting-color decalcomania transfer sheet to such shield; Third, pressing said shield to the finger nail permanently adhesively to secure it thereto; and Fourth, peeling oif the transfer sheet to leave a contrasting-color design on said shield.
