(Cl. 97-123) This invention relates to plows and more specifically to the mouldboards or, as they are sometimes designated, the breasts thereof, and this application is a division of our application for United States Letters Patent Serial No. 304,662, filed August l5, 1952, and now Patent Number 2,785,617.
An important object of the invention is to provide a skeleton mouldboard which may be adjusted as a unit with respect to a plowshare and plow frame, and also the individual ribs of the mouldboard adjusted with respeci: to the plowshare and frame, so as to expedite and improve plowing operations.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a mouldboard including a plurality of spaced-apart ribs which ribs may be warped or twisted to assume selected positions with respect to the plow frame and share so that the soil will be more readily lifted, turned, sheared and pulverized than in the case of rigid skeleton ribs of skeleton mouldboards and, consequently, the amount of labor reduced in plowing.
Still another important object of the invention is to provide angularity adjusting means for the mouldboard which provides for such means disposed well inwardly of the edges of the mouldboard and for ready manipulation of a pin to effect adjustment in conjunction with an elongated opening with converging walls. This has been found a very desirable non-rigid construction and tends to prevent breakage of the ribs.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following detailed description of the invention, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this disclosure and in which drawing:
Fig. l is an elevation of a plow, with the mouldboard in vertical section.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the mouldboard of Fig. 1 removed from the plow frame, with portions of the structure in section.
Fig. 3 is an elevation of portions of angularity adjusting means of the mouldboard of Figs. 1 and 2.
Fig. 4 is an elevation of a part of the angularity adjusting means of Fig. 3.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention and wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A designates a frame of a plow; B, a plowshare; C, the adjustable mouldboard of this application; D, a support means for the mouldboard; and E, means to rock the plowshare B and mouldboard C.
The frame A may be of conventional construction and includes a body portion 5, handle portion 6 at the upper end of the body portion, and landside 7 at the lower end of the body portion and extending forwardly therefrom.
At the forward end of the landside 7 is the plowshare or, as it is more commonly called, share B, having a point body portion 10 and an upwardly and rearwardly inclined shinpiece 11, providing a rst support means for 2,815,498 Patented Dec. 17, 1957 ICC the mouldboard C and which share is movably carried by the landside for controlled limited rotation upon a forwardly and rearwardly extending horizontal axis, vas is well known in the art.
The adjustable mouldboard C, being of skeleton form, includes a plurality of spaced-apart, elongated, upwardly and rearwardly inclined, bowed ribs 15, which are longitudinally twistable. Each rib has an elongated, narrow body portion 16, with upper and lower faces, a lowermost downturned flange 17, substantially parallel, downwardly-extending side flanges 18, and an uppermost rearwardly-extending ange 19, which may be narrower than the flange 17. The material of the ribs 15 is such that the ribs may be twisted-or partly canted or warped. Spring steel is a well-known material having the necessary characteristic. Preferably, as shown in Fig. 2, the ribs vary in length so as to provide an upwardly curved upper edge profile for the mouldboard as a whole, and are normally inv substantially the same inclined plane.
Preferably, adjacent the upper ends of the ribs 15, they are joined together by connection means 20 which is shown as an elongated bracket body portion 21 which may be a substantially at strip, as of steel, extending p with its longitudinal axis normal to the longitudinal axes of the ribs, and provided with a plurality of feetv or lugs 22, one for each rib, rigid with the portion 21 and exi tending, in parallelism, normal thereto, from a longitudinal edge thereof. The feet or lugs may be secured rigidly to the ribs in any approved way, such as by conventional rivets 23. At substantially the center of the portion 21 is a pivot opening 24 for a pivot member 31 to be subsequently described.
First support means 25 for and constituting a part of the mouldboard C, includes an elongated support or bracket body 26, secured to the upper end portion of the shinpiece 11 in any approved way, such as by conventional welding for rotative movement therewith, and having a downwardly inclined elongated ange 27 at its upper end. Projecting upwardly in substantial parallelism from the flange 27 are a plurality of spaced-apart pivot pins 28, one for each rib 15, since their upper end portions extend through suitable pivot openings in the central portions of the anges 17, whereby there is provided means loosely connecting the lower end portions of the ribs to the support or bracket body 26.
The angularity adjusting means 30 for the ribs 15 of the mouldboard C, includes an elongated pivot member 31 projecting upwardly from and rigid with the central portion of the flange 27 to move therewith, and extending through the pivot opening 24, and being beneath the central of the ribs 15. Rigidly carried by an intermediate portion of the pivot member are a pair of bracket bodies 32, one of which is shown in Fig. 4, which project normal thereto in spaced-apart relationship and may be relatively short flat plates or rigidstrips eachv having a` longitudinally-extending slot 33 on one end portion thereof, with the size of the slot enlarged at intervals to form pin shank-receiving openings 34, 35 and 36 (three being shown, by way of example). At the other end portion of the bracket bodies is a pivot pin opening 37 for a pivot pin 3S which pivotally connects an actuator member 39 to the bracket bodies. The actuator member 39 comprises an elongated body portion 40 and an upwardly turned terminal portion 41 at each end, with these terminal portions constructed and arranged so that the outermost ribs 15 will rest upon the end faces 42. However, as the actuator member 39 is pivoted on the pivot pin 38, which extends through an opening 43 in the actuator body, oiset from the center of the latter, one terminal portion will bear or press against one of these outermost ribs while the other terminal portion will move 3. away from the other outermost rib in order to twist or cant them.
