PLOW OF THE SWEEP TYPE Filed Nov. l5, 1941 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented May 30, 1944 1 UNITED .STATES PATENT oFFlcg PLow or 'rim SWEEPTYIPE Y l y George W. Lee, Willow Springs, N. C. Application November 13,1941,serial1-n. 118,9c9y t i comme (01.9'1-118) I "Vi Generically,`the present invention relates to plows of the sweep type, and specifically it has reference to a plow wherein it is possible to vary the pitch 'angle of thesweep and to change the longitudinal axis -of the sweep relative to the body of the plow.
l The majority of plowsof this particular type, with the 'exception of Patent No. 2,226,665 issued December 31, 1940, to vGeorge W. Lee, have not been provided with any means whereby it is possible to obtain the double adjustment ofthe sweep above` referred to. By virtue of the present construction, such double adjustment can be effected, and it is possible to replace quickly the sweep for one of another` size to compensate for the various :plowing conditions that may be encountered. I g' An object of the present invention is to provide a plow of the sweep type wherein the sweep may be easily and `conveniently adjusted with relation to the share. i v
A furtherobject is .to provide a plow of the sweep type that is provided with means whereby the :pitch angle `ofl the sweep may be changed and the longitudinal aids of the sweep in regard to the body of the plow can be varied.
Yet a further objectl of this invention is to provide a plow of the sweep type which will permit the sweep to be easily and conveniently changed for replacement with a sweep of a different size to compensate for various plowing conditions.
To achieve the above and other advantageous objects, the invention broadly comprises a plow having a body portion, comprising a plow xed thereto. A support is plvotally attached to the body and a sweep is removably secured to the support. Means are provided to coact with the sweep and support whereby the position of the sweep with respect to the support and the position of the support in regard to the body can be altered.
In the drawings in which like numerals designate the-same or similar parts:
Figure l is a view in perspective of a plow of the sweep type equipped with my invention.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the plow shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional View of the plow shown in Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken along the line 4--4 of Figure 3 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 5 is a front plan view of the adjusting casting.
Figure 6 isl a view of the castngshown in Figure 5looking from the landside.: f I
Figure 7 is a top plan view of the casting shown in Figures and 6. I
Referring to Figure 1 it will :be: 4seen that a beam I is formed at its rearend with an arcuate shaped stock 2. The stock 2 lis? attached tothe inner face of a body `portion 3 by upper and lower bolts 4 and Srespectively; as perhaps best illustrated in Figure 3.` l I Referring` now to Figure 2 it can be seen that the forward: end ofthe body 3 is provided with a frog 6 that carries an Ainwardly bent lportion 'I which is parallel with the body 3.- A share 8 is xedly attached to thev frog 6 by means of a bolt or thellike 9. Q l. l
A landside I0 is secured lto the outer face 'of the body 3 by front .and rearbolts Il` and l2 respectively. The iront boltv I I4 (see Figure 2) extends through the'body 3 adjacent to the frog B and the outer end thereofy projects through an aperture I3 formed iin portion I of `the frogV 6, the purpose of which willlater be more fully explained.. .l ,I
As hereinabove referred to one of the primary purposes of the present invention is to provide a structure wherebyit is possible to vary the pitch angle of the sweep and to change the longitudinal axis of the sweep with respect to the body 3. To accomplish this, it will be noted that I have provided a casting designated generally I4. The casting is formed with a vertical mem ber I5 provided on one edge with a right angular web I5' and carrying at its lower end a sleeve I6. The sleeve I6 is disposed between the inner face of the body portion 3 and the member 'I of the frog and is pivotally secured to the body por- I tion by virtue of the bolt I I which extends therethrough. The lower end of a hand lever II is attached to the web I5' by bolts I 8. A housing I9 is provided adjacent to the upper end of the lever and a spring pressed rack pawl 20 having at its lower end a tooth 2| is carried thereby. The tooth 2| is adapted to coact with spaced teeth 22 formed on an arcuate bar 23. The upper end of the bar is attached to the beam I as shown at 24 and the lower end thereof is secured to the stock 2 by the bolt 4.
Hand vpiece 25 is pivoted to the upper end of the lever II as shown at 26 and is connected to the upper end of lpawl 20 by means of a link 21. Obviously, movement of the hand piece 25 toward the lever I'I will move the tooth 2I out of the spacings between the teeth 22 on the bar 23, thus permitting adjustment of the casting I4.
i of the bolt in the slot it is possible to effect various adjustments of the sweep relative toa casting I4. It will` be noted that the member 28 is at an angle to the horizontal plane passing through the axis of the sleeve I6 and that it is n also at an angle to the vertical plane passing through the same axis. By virtue of this angular` relationship the sweep 3| can be moved through the arc of a cone.
A fork 35 is suitably secured to the rear exftremity of the body 3 and the lower ends of the i plow handles 36 are afxed to the arms of the" fork. Braces 3l areattached to the plow handles 36 and the beam I for addedstrength kand rigidity to the plow. j Y l It will be appreciated that .sweepl can be adjusted relativeto. the arcuate vmember 28 and that the vposition of the member IIIv in regard tto the body 3 can also be'varied. More specifically,
by manipulation of the bolt 33 in the slot 29th@ Vposition of the vsweep 3Ifwithrespectlto themernber 28 can be altered and by, operationof the lever l1 vthe locatio'of the casting.` Min .regard to .the-body'portion vmay be changed.v
This particular construction will enable the approximately the same amount of earth from a furrow when the plow is used in the opposite direction.
The structure whereby I am able to obtain the double adjustment of the sweep is very simple and can be readily incorporated with the majority of plows that are now available on the open market. The unit is simple in construction and operation and can be manufactured at a reasonable cost. I
While I yhaveshowirgancl described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I wish it to be understood that I do not confine myself to the precise details of construction herein set forth VAby way of illustration, as it is apparent that many changes and variations may be made therein, by'thos'e skilled in the art, without departing from thespirit 'of theinvention, or exceeding the scope ofthe appended claims.
I claim: ',1'.; A- plowconstructon.comprising a body portion, a fr ogprovided at the `front end of the body portioma share. ;atta ched ,to the frog, an offset pitchangle ofthe sweep to.l be varied andit.- is
also feasibleyto alter4 a change in the ,longitudinal axis of thersweep with respect tothe body portion.
By bein'glable to change the position lof ,the casting Il in regard Yto the body portion 3 through the manipulation `of the .lever I1 it is possible to permit a desired amount of .soil to (be lrowed about plants during theircultivation. .Y j
lAlso ,.when the plow is being `used over inclined ground 'the sweep 3| can be easily adjusted vat the end of each row to effect displacement of providedon the frogf, a plate pivotally attached betweenqthefbody portion andtheoiset and having an angular portion extending rearwardly therefrom; vanarcuate slotfin the angular portion, a sweep securedin the slot whereby vertical adjustment .of 'the sweep `may be eiected and a lever attachedy to. theplateto raise and lower the free endof'thejsweep.
2 In .a plow construction, a v,body portion,r a frog provided atthegfront end of the body portion, a share securedto the frog, ian offset carriedbythe. frvog v a support ,pivotally attached ff GEORGE W. LEF.
