WILLIAM H. MONTGOMERY, OF LOWELL, NEWV YORK.
SEED AND CORN PLANTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 281,586, dated July 17, 1883. Application filed August 11, res-2. (No modem ERY, a resident of Lowell, in the county of .Oneida, and the State of New York, have in';
vented certain new and useful Improvements in Seed and Corn Planters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and'usethe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form apart of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a top View of my improved cornplanter. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is alongitudinal vertical section through line :0 a", Fig. 1; and Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are de tail views of the seed-slides.
, Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures. v
My invention has relation to corn-planters; and it consistsin the improved. construction, combination, and arrangement of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates a rectangular frame mounted upon two larger wheels, B B, fastened upon a transverse divided axle, O O, turning in suitable hearings in the frame, and upon a smaller swiveled wheel fastened under the front part of the frame. A wheel, D, having an annular g-"roove, E, in oneof its faces, is fastened upon the portion C of the axle O G, the latter being divided in the middle, and each half turning independently inits bearings, and a wheel, F, having an annular flange, G, upon the face, facing wheel D, and fitting and turning in groove E, turns upon the inner end of the same half'of the axle. The inner side of the flange G is providedwith ratchet-teeth, which are engaged by one or more spring-pawls, H, pivoted in recesses in the periphery of the central portion of the grooved wheel D, when the machine is drawn forward. The rim of wheel F is provided with two diametrically-opposite ratchet-shaped projections, I, facing in the direction of the revolution of the wheel, which engage, as, the wheel is revolved, a projection, J, upon the outer end of an arm, K,
which is hinged to a block, L, sliding in ways M upon the front portion of the frame. The
outer end of arm K is provided with a trans verse pin, N, immediately above projection J,
the ends of which pin project into and slide in two longitudinal slots, 0, in a bar, 1?, hinged upon a longitudinal bar, Q, in the middle of the frame, and bent over the end of arm K, the slots being on both sides of the arm.
It will be seen that as the machine progresses and wheel F is revolved the projections I will be brought to bear against the projection upon the arm K, pushing it forward, sliding block L forward until projection I slips by projection J, allowing the arm to be forced back by springs in the secd-boxes, which will be more fully described, the slotted bent bar 1? guiding arm K and preventing it from being forced to the sides. Block L has two laterally-extending flanges, R, which slide inthe correspondingly-shaped ways M, and two arms, S,
hinged upon the side pieces of the frame at their outer ends, are hinged with their inner slotted ends to pins T upon the flanges B, so that the arms will be pushed forward with block L. Two rods, U, are fastened to these arms, near their fulcrum, upon the sides of the frame, and project into the seed-hoppers V. These hoppers are provided with removable partitions W, dividing the hoppers into two receptacles-one for seed and one forfertilizerand have false bottoms X, having perforationsY and Z, one on each side of the partition.
Below the false bottoms X move the seedslides a, having perforations b and 0, corresponding to the perforations in the falsebottoms, and registering with the same when block L is in its rear position, the slides being fastened upon and operated by the rods U, which extend beyond the forward edge of the seed-slides, and slide in perforations in the front walls of the hoppers, having spiral springs d wrapped around them, bearing against the front'edges of the seed-slides, and the inner sides of the front walls of the seedboxes serving to force the seedslides back when they have been pressed forward by the arms S through rods U. The bottom 6 of the seed-boxes is provided with two perforations, f and 9, corresponding to the perforations Y and Z and b and c of the falsebottoms and seed-slides, respectively, an d registering with the latter perforations when the seed-slides are in their forward position, and these perforations open into two flexible tubes, h, incased in and protected at their lower ends by two metallic tubes, 2', slanting at their ends, serving to open furrows for the corn to be dropped, and hinged by arms j, projecting from their upper end to the front portion of the frame. Two covering-shovels, 7c, are fastened to these tubes, a short distance in the rear of the same, and the arms j are connected by a transverse bar or rod, 1, to which a rope or chain, m, is fastened, which passes over a segmental grooved block, a, pivoted upon the frame, and having an upright lever, 0, fastened v to it, by which the block may be tilted, drawing the rope up, raising the opening-tubes and covering-shovels, thus regulating the depth of planting, as well as enabling the operator to raise the tubes and shovels entirely off the ground to avoid obstacles upon the same. It will thus be seen that as the machine is drawn across a field the projections I upon wheel F will push the sliding block forward twice in every revolution, thus planting four hills in every revolution of the drive-wheel, the sliding block pushing arms S forward, which again in turn push the seed-slides forward, while the springs (I force the seed-slides, and through them the arms S and the sliding block, back in position again.
Havingthus described myinvention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. In a corn-planter, the combination of the wheel D, fastened upon the drive-axle C, having annular groove E in its inner face, and provided with spring-pawl H in the periphery of its central portion, wheel F, turning upon axle 0, having annular flange G upon its face, fitting into groove E, and having ratchet-teeth upon its inner side, engaging pawl H, and having diametrically-opposite projections I upon its rim, arm K, having projection J and transverse pin N, hinged bent bar P, having slots 0, and flanged block L, sliding in ways M upon the frame, and connected with and operating the seed-slides, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. In a corn-planter, the combination of the flanged block L, sliding in ways M upon the frame, and having hinged arm K, engaging with its projection J, the projections I upon wheel F, arms S, hinged with their inner slotted ends to the flanges R upon the sliding block, and pivoted at their outer ends upon the side pieces of the frame, rods U, fastened to arms S near their outer ends, and having the seedslides fastened upon them, and spiral springs d, wrapped around the outer ends of rods U, and bearing against the inside of the front walls of the seed-boxes and against the front edges of the seed-slides.
3. As an improvement in corn-planters, the combination and arrangement, as described, of the frame A, wheels B, shaft 0, grooved wheel D, ratchet flanged wheel F, having projections I, hinged arm K, transverse pin N, slotted hinged arm P, sliding block L, ways M, arms S, rods U, seed-slides a, seed-boxes V, flexible tubes 72, opening-tubes 1', having arms j, coveringshovels k, rod Z, chain or rope m, grooved segmental block 12, and lever 0, all constructed to operate as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
