Description
Nbv. 19, 1957 G. l. FREDHOLM ARRANGEMENT IN CALENDERS Filed May 10, 1954 1 FIG.
United S ates Pateh i 2,813,357 j AR ANGEMENTIN CALENDERS Gunnar I. Fredholm, Bromma, Sweden, assign'or to Vei-kstads Aktiebolaget Calor,.Bromma, Sweden Application May 10, 1954, Serial No. 428350 3 Claims. (Cl. 38-56) The present invention relates to an arrangement in calenders having an ironing box capable of being heated, which box forms a bearing for a driven calender roller provided with a centrally arranged heavy body, the interior of which roller communicates with a suction device for removing moisture from the roller cover.
One object of the invention is to provide a structure of the load body which may be easily adjusted to the roller pressure desired in a certain type of calenders.
Another object of the invention is to provide a structure, in which the heavy body may, in a simple and inexpensive manner, be built into the calender roller and be centred therein.
According to the present invention, all of the aforesaid desiderata have been fulfilled substantially in that the heavy body consists of a cast material, preferably concrete, disposed between two end walls, which are interconnected by means of armouring-irons.
Further objects of the invention will become apparent from the following description when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. l is a longitudinal section through a calender roller.
Fig. 2 shows, on a reduced scale, the calender in crosssection.
Fig. 3 is an axial section on an enlarged scale through a universal joint provided between the roller and the driving shaft of this latter.
The calender roller according to Fig. 1 is provided with end walls 2 and 3, around which there is fastened a perforated cylinder casing 4 coated with one or more layers 5 of textile material of a kind suitable for the mangling. The roller, which in Fig. 2 is designated by 1, is carried in known manner by an ironing box 6 so as to press by gravity upon an ironing board 7 shaped according to the casing of the roller. Thus, the ironing box forms a bearing for the roller. This latter is driven by the aid of a universal joint, which is shown in Fig. 3. The universal joint is coupled to the end wall 3 of the roller, whereas the end wall 2 is connectable to a suction device by means of a hub sleeve 8 so that air from the outside of the roller may be drawn in through the textile layer 5 and the perforations in the casing 4 to the interior of the roller and therefrom be passed on through the hub sleeve 8 which, for this purpose, is formed with radial air passages 9. By means of bolts 10 the hub sleeve, which is centrally disposed in the end wall 2, is rigidly secured to an inner wall 11 parallel to the end wall 2.
The roller is loaded by means of a cylindrical heavy body 12 fixed in between the wall 11 and the end wall 3. The body 12 consists of a cast material, preferably concrete, and has longitudinal irons 13 in its peripheral part, which irons are welded to the walls 3 and 11, respectively. By this, a stable structure of the body 12 is obtained. In order to prevent condensation in the interior of the calender roller the body 12 is coated with a heat insulation 14 consisting e. g. of glass-wool. Said coating is in turn enclosed by a thin cover plate 14, which is con,
ine'cted in liquid-tight manner to the edgeiportions of the end wall 11 and to the end wall 3 so that moist air cannot tively short time the same temperature as the moist "air .within the calender roller so that condensation does not 1 ,1. For producing the load body by casting there is "reiquired a mould which, according to the invention, con- ;sists .o f'the wall 11, the central'porti'on of the walLS and a cylindrical casing 16connected to said end walls, which casing is fixed under tension around a central ring 17 at each wall. The irons 13 are inserted .inborings in both walls and are welded to these latter. The irons rest against the inside of the rings 17. Said mould is placed in a standing position on the wall 11 as a bottom and is filled with concrete through a centred opening 18 in the end wall 3, the concrete enclosing the armouring' irons 13. A sleeve shaped hub portion 19 is fitted into the opening 18 and is fastened to the end wall 3 by means of screws 20. Subsequently, the mould is introduced into the very envelope of the calender roller, and the end wall 3 is fixed in position, in a manner known per se, by means of a locking ring 31 or the like.
At the wall 11, the load body is provided] with the hub sleeve 8, which, at its inner portion 21, is purely cy1indrical and is held in centred position by means of a centred opening 22 in the end wall 2. The hub sleeve is axially displaceable in the opening 22 so that there is a possibility of expensive movement upon temperature variations. Further, the hub sleeve 8 is formed, at its inner portion, with an annular flange 23, which engages a centering groove 24 on the outside of the wall 11.
Fig. 3 shows the universal joint of the calender. The sleeve shaped hub portion 19 is provided with inner longitudinal grooves which engage the both ends of a pivot 25 disposed at right angles to the axis of the calender roller and, by means of an articulated rod 26, being coupled to a transverse shaft 26' which is arranged at right angles to the pivot 25 and is fixed with a hub portion 27 appertaining to a pinion 28, by the aid of which the calender roller is driven. The hub portion 27 is rotatable in a bearing 29 rigidly secured to a stand wall 30 of the machine.
What I claim is:
1. In a machine of the class described, a heated bed, a rotatable calender roller freely resting in and carried by said bed, said roller comprising end walls and a perforated cylindrical casing, a cylindrical pervious padding encasing said roller, driving means near the one end wall of the roller and comprising a driven hub portion rotatable in a bearing rigidly secured to a stand, a universal joint having one end connected to said end wall of the roller and actuating the latter, theopposite end of the universal joint being connected to said driven hub portion, a hub sleeve secured to the opposite end wall of the roller, said hub sleeve being provided with air passages, and a suction device communicating with the hub sleeve for withdrawing air from the interior of the roller.
2. In a machine of the class described, a heated bed, a calender roller freely rotatable in and carried by said bed, said roller comprising end walls and a perforated cylindrical casing, a cylindrical pervious padding encasing said roller, driving means at the one end wall of the roller comprising a driven hub portion rotatable in a bearing rigidly secured to a stand, a universal joint having one end connected to said end wall of the roller and actuating the latter, the opposite end of the universal joint being connected to said driven hub portion, a hub sleeve secured to the opposite end wall of the roller, said sleeve being provided with air passages therein, a cylindrical core within the roller coaxially connected to the latter and spaced from said perforated cylindrical casing of the roller, whereby to provide an annular cylindrical chamber between said casing and said core communicating with the air passages in said hub sleeve, and a suction device communicating with the perforated cylindrical casing and said core.
3. In an invention of the class described, an ironer box adapted to be heated, at calender roller journaled in said box, a cylindrical body centrally arranged within a hollow ironer roller and coaxial withthe latter, a universal joint connected to one end wall of said roller and actuating the latter, a locking ring securing said end wall in position, a suction device having a hub sleeve secured to the opposite end wall of said roller for withdrawing air from the latter, said hub sleeve being formed with radial air perforations, whereby subsequently to form an outlet for said air.
