10 Claims. (Cl. 229-62) This invention relates to closure means particularly adapted for closing the open ends of containers such as bags and the like.

An object of this invention is to provide improved closure means for closing the open end of flexible walled containers such as bags or the like, the construction of the closure means being such as to allow repeated opening and closure of the container to which the same is applied.

Another object of this invention is to provide bag clo sure means of the character described, which is readily manipulated to effect the rapid opening or closing of a container to which thesame is applied.

A further object of this invention is to provide an improved bag closure means which is adapted to tightly grip the open end portion of a bag, allowing the bag to be suspended by the closure means without slippage of the bag relative to the closure means due to the weight of the bag contents, yet allowing easy removal of the closure from the bag and repeated re-use of said closure to reclose the bag.

Still another object of this invention is to provide improved bag closure means having a structure allowing rapid application thereof to the mouth of a bag to close the same and permitting the closure to be opened by simple manipulation to gain access to the contentsof the bag. 7 Yet a further object 'of this invention is to provide improved bag closure means usable with flexible walled bags of transparent or opaque material, the closure means being of a construction which aids 'in maintaining the shape of the bag and afiords means for effectively disposing the bags on shelves or the like.

Yet another object of this invention is to provide improved, reusable bag closure means adapted to carry various indicia, markings and the like, for the purpose of clearly indicating the contents of the bag, sizes, weights and thelike, as well as trademarks or other identifying insignia or markings:

Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.

With the increased use of flexible walled containers, particularly bags made from cellophane, polyethylene, vinyl or epoxy resins, in both transparent and opaque forms, it is vital that the closure means used on'such bags augment and enhance the utility of the bags. Thus, with a re-usable closure, the contents of the bag may be withdrawn for inspection or the like after opening such a closure; returned to the bag which is then reclosed, thereby preserving the contents from soilage or the like.

As shown in the drawings, the bag closure embodying the invention comprises a blank, indicated in Fig. l, which may be formed of cardboard, stiffened paper, plastic sheeting, wood veneer or other materials having suitable stiffness allowing the same to retain a shape and to be scored or creased to provide panels andtabs as elements of the closure.

The closure comprises a rectangular panel 8 with succession of narrow folding panels 3, 2'and 1 extending from the top edge thereof;

8, 2, 3 and 5 afford on their outer surfaces means for'imprinting thereon indicia and markings of all kinds to show sizes, weights, source of manufacture, trademarks, ornamental matter and the like. Furthermore, the closure le'nds shape to the containe'r and the contents thereof. The bag container with the closure of the instant invention lendsitself to storage on shelves with'the closure extending forwardly and panel 3 thereof visible to display the markings thereon.

A; modified form of closure is shown in Figs; 11 and 12, wherein the slots 10' are replaced by slits 10a formed in the-crease line short cross slits 11 being formed in panel 8- at the opposite ends of slits 10a, to provide short, bendable tabs 12 which are engageable by tongues 9 when panel 1- isfolded' on crease line b toward panel 2. Thus, the tabs 12 are bent outwardly by tongues9 to become interengaged therewith, taking with the tongues linear portions of the bag material for positively anchoring the same, as previously described.

Also, end tabs 4, 4' may be replaced by wing shaped members 13, 13' foldable toward each other and toward panel'8 on crease lines 14. The members 13, 13' include tabs 15 extending laterally outward of the lower portions thereof and arm portions 16 extending laterally outward of the upper portions thereof, said portions 16 being longer than tabs 15'and extending parallel thereto. Panel 2 is formed on the central portion thereof with a. pair of transverse slots 17.

2. In combination with a flexible walled bag, closure means comprising a panel adapted to be disposed on one side of said bag adjacent the mouth thereof, a plurality of successive, hinged panels extending from the top edge of said first mentioned panel and foldable toward each other to interlock therebetween the mouth portion of said bag, and interengageable means on said last mentioned panels for displacing a linear portion of said bag walls. out of the plane thereof and positively gripping said T displaced wall portions to retain the mouth portion of said bag against slipping between said last mentioned panels.

3. The combination as in claim 2 wherein said last mentioned panels and the interlocked portion of said bag l are foldable toward said first mentioned-panel, and foldable tab means extending from the opposite ends of said: first mentioned panel for overlying said last mentioned panels and including interengageable portions for retaining the same adjacent said first mentioned panel.

4. Bag closure means comprising a base panel, adja cent panel portions foldable over each other and extend-- ing from the top edge of said base panel, a shallow tongue; projecting from an intermediate portion of the outer edge of the outermost of said panel portions, means disposed between the innermost of said panel portions and said:

base panel releasably engageable by said tongue for locking said panel portions, together, and tabs extending laterally from said base panel at the opposite ends thereof, said tabs being foldable toward said base panel, and

Having thus disclosed my invention, I claimas new and desire to protect by Letters Patent I 1. In combination with. a flexible walled containe closure means comprising a base panel, a pair of adjacent-panel portions foldable over each other and extending successively from the top edge of said base'panel, said adjacent panel portions being adapted to receive therebetween the open end walled portion of said container,

'5. Closure means as in claim 4 wherein said panel portion locking means comprises a longitudinally extend-- ing slot for receiving said tongue.

6. Closure means as in claim 4 wherein said panel. portion locking means comprises a displaceable tab engageable by said tongue for interlocking engagement. r 7. Closure means as in claim 4 and further including an arm extending from at least one of said tabs and disposed parallel to and above said tab.

8. Closure means as in claim 4 and further including an arm extending from each of said tabs and disposed parallel and above said tabs, said arms being adapted to be superposed to form handle means for said closure.

9. Closure means as in claim 4 wherein said table taining means comprises transversely disposed slots formed in the innermost panel portion for receiving end portions of said. tabs.

10. In combination with a flexible walled bag, a bag closure, comprising a still, shape retaining sheet member formed with parallel crease lines to provide a plurality oflongitudinally extending hinged panels, a pair of said panels being foldable along crease lines into opposed relivtionto receive therebetween a marginal mouth portion of said bag, and tongue means on one of said pair of panels displaceable from the plane thereof and in contact with container and anchoring the same between said adjacent:

panel portions, said adjacent panel portions being fold-z able toward said basepanel and. tab means extending; from opposite ends of said base panel and foldable over a wall portion of said bag for displacing the same from the plane of said bag wall, and means releasably engageable with said tongue means for releasably grippingv said displaced wall portion therebetween.
