Parks, Sn, Dayton, Ohio Application Jirly'29, 1953, Serial Ne. 371,077 7 Claims. cl. 21-119 This invention relates to improvements in Vaporizers, and has for its object to provide a vaporizer in which there is obtained a complete vaporization of the medication used. This apparatus is used in conjunction with steam and will act over a long period of time, and will serve the purpose of diverting the gum, inert materials and residue into a chamber remote from the boiling chamber. This residue is accessible, and may be easily reached for the purpose of cleaning.
It is also an object of this invention to provide means to prevent the apparatus from tilting, and to provide means to protect the operator from being electrocuted, and Will also prevent the back flow of cold air.
It is also an object of this invention to provide a support for a bottle or jar that is corrugated to permit the passage of air.
It is also an object of this invention to provide an upwardly inclined passageway from the chamber immediately beneath the bottle to the heating chamber, and having in this passageway a trap. This trap prevents the back how of the vaporized medication, but permits and provides for the back flow of the gum, inert materials and residue.
It is also on object of this invention to provide a vaporizerthat is sturdy, easily manufactured, and has provided therefor, for the transportation thereof, handles.
It is also an object of this invention to provide in connection with the vaporizer a structure for vaporizing the materials suspended in water, and distributed in lateral directions. Adjacent to this instrumental'ity for producing a lateral distribution of the medicated steam, there is provided 'a deflector that tends to properly distribute the medication, prevents children from reaching the hot plate or electrode, and prevents the entrance of "cold air into the heating chamber. It also tends to abate any excessive foam from rising into the spout.
It is also an object of this invention to provide in connection with 'the'bottle having a cone-shaped outlet which has associated therewith a tube for controlling and preventing air from entering into the bottle and thereby regu- 'lating the flow of the medicated solution. I It is also an object of this invention to provide in 'connection with the vaporizer a means for supporting the bottle on the vaporizer so that 'it will not easily topple and fall. 7
There is a continuous passageway from the fluid chamber. to the heating chamber. The bottom of the passageway is in a straight line from one chamber to the other. 7 It is also an object of this invention to provide a vaporiz er "in which 'the base member supports a lid or top frln e'mb er so that there is no seeping out of Water from the chambers.
These and other advantages will appear from the description taken from the drawings in which:

The foundation part of this vaporizer is a base 1, made of any suitable material, "such as metal or plastic. This base is supported by a plurality of legs 2 which may have on the bottom thereof rubber tips 3 to prevent the apparatus from scarring the surface of the table or other such instrumentalities which support it. The base is somewhat in the form of the figure eight which has in oneend thereof a well 4. Around the top ofthe well is a ledge 5. On the end of the base opposite the well is a'boiling chamber 6, which has therein electric heating facilities or hot plates indicated by the numeral 7. Between the well and the boiling chamber is a channel 8, the bottom of which is in substantially a straight line and arcuate as indicated by the numeral 9. In this channel is a trap member 10 shown inFigure 5. This trap member has an arcuate bottom E1. This arcuate bottom cooperates with the arcuate bottom 9 of the channel to form a return way from the boilihg chamber to the Well.
On each side of the trap member is "a side member 12, the lower edges of which are attached in any suitable manner to the edges or the arcuate bottom 11. On one end of the side members is a plate 13 extending from the top of the side members nearly to the arcii ate bottom 11.
011 the other ends of the side members is a plate 1 4. The plate 14 extends also from the top of the side members nearly to the top of the areuate bottom 11. The end of the arcua'te member 11 has a tongue 15 at one erid, also level with the lower side of the end plate 13. On the base 1 is a cover 17 of any suitable 'jm'ets'rin, such as metal or plastic. The cover has an outside flange '18 that fits around the outer edge of the entire base. Thereis an opening in the cover above the well and around the opening is a flange 19 that fits in the top of the well. I
On the cover above the boiling chamber is a flue 20 which has therein an inner flange and an outer flange. Around the top of the inner flange is a rib 23 which sup ports a baffle 33. I
In the cover above the well 4 is an opening to receive the mouth of a jar or bottle 25 which has a removable cap thatrests on the ledge 5 in the well when the tar is in an inverted position on the base and over the well. Braces 24 hold the ja r in a stable upright position, H v
Tn theeen'ter of the lid 'is a idorne shaped bulb '27 has in its center a hole '28 through which a liquid can pass from the jar into the Well. Adjacent the bulb 27 is a pipe 29 which extends from the interior of the jar into the Well. The lower end of the pipe is slightly above the hole 28 in the bulb 27.
Resting on the flue is a dispensing head 30 which has thereon a spout 31. In the flue and resting on the rib 23 is a baffle 33 in the path of the liquid as it passes from the boiling chamber. The baflle has an oblong ring like member 34 that rests on the rib 23. Extending up from the member 34 are four posts 35, which have on the top thereof an oblong flat member 36, and between the members 34 and 36 and suitably supported by the posts is a member 37 similar in shape to member 34, but smaller. On the dispensing head is a removable spout 31 just above the baffle 33.
In Figure 8, there is shown a modified form of a vaporizer in which the base and the lid or cover are cast into one piece. Extending from the boiling chamber to the well is a trough 39. Fitting in the boiling chamber, as in the other forms of Vaporizers, there is a flue 40 similar to that shown in the other forms, but in this case the flue is removable. This flue fits in the top of the boiling chamber and has a tongue 41 extending therefrom that 'fits in the trough formed in the top. This form has the usual removable dispensing head 30.
For the purpose of providing electric current to the boiling chamber, there is provided contacts 42. These contacts furnish current to the electrodes 7.
The bottom of the base immediately under the boiling chamber is inclined as indicated by the numeral 43 toward the channel 8, which serves to conduct the unused matter into the bottom of the well 4.
On each end of the base is a handle 44 by which the vaporizer may be carried from place to place.
The following is a medication adapted to be used with the present vaporizer:
A preparation designed to be used in a steam vaporizer for the production of medicinal and aromatic vapors for relief of congestion of the respiratory tract such as the nasal passages, bronchi, sinuses, and lung, resulting from the common cold and related conditions.
Benzofume is a hydro-alcoholic solution of the alcohol soluble principles of Styrax benzoin or Styrax tonkinensis or other species of the section Anthostyrax of the genus Styrax, family Styraceae and Aloe perryi or Aloe barbadensis or Aloe ferox or Aloe africana or Aloe spicata, family Liliaceae and Liquidambar orientales or Liquidambar styraciflua, family Hamamilidaceae and myroxylon Balsamum family Leguminosae (the above described vegetable drug products are commonly marketed in an ofiicial United States Pharmacopoeial preparation called Compound Tincture of Benzoin), and menthol U. S. P. and Eucalyptal U. S. P. and inert ingredients.
Benzofume when added to water produces a permanent suspension or emulsion. On evaporation of the water, the residue from Benzofume is water dispersable requiring no detergents or scouring for its removal. The residue is non-corrosive to metals, plastics or glass. To aid in the electrical reaction sodium chloride is added to the solution.
What I claim is:
1. In a vaporizer, a base having therein a liquid container well and a boiling chamber, the bottom of the well being lower than the bottom of the boiling chamber and a channel having a bottom slanting from the bottom of the boiling chamber to the bottom of the well, and the bottom of the boiling chamber being declined toward the upper end of the channel.
2. In a vaporizer, a base having therein a liquid container well and a boiling chamber, the bottom of the well being lower than the bottom of the boiling chamber, a channel having a bottom slanting from the bottom of the boiling chamber to the bottom of the well, and the bottom of the boiling chamber discharging into the bottom of the channel, a trap in said channel having a bottom member cooperating with the bottom of said channel to form a passageway for the return of gum and sludge from the boiling chamber to the well, said trap having walls forming an upper passageway for the flow of liquid from the well to the boiling chamber.
3. In a vaporizer, a base having therein a liquid container well and a boiling chamber, the bottom of the well being lower than the bottom of the boiling chamber, a channel having a bottom slanting from the bottom of the boiling chamber to the bottom of the well, and the bottom of the boiling chamber discharging into the bottom of the channel, a trap in said channel having a bottom member cooperating with the bottom of said channel to form a passageway for the return of gum and sludge from the boiling chamber to the well, said trap also having longitudinal walls and transverse walls in the upper part of the trap forming an upper passageway for the flow of liquid from the well to the boiling chamber, said transverse walls retarding the flow of hot liquid from the boiling chamber to the well.
4. In a vaporizer, a base having therein a liquid container well and a boiling chamber, the bottom of the well being lower than the bottom of the boiling chamber, a channel having a bottom slanting from the bottom of the boiling chamber to the bottom of the well, the bottom of the boiling chamber discharging gum and sludge onto the bottom of said channel and along the bottom of said channel into the well, and a removable container on said well feeding liquid into said well to flow along the upper part of said channel to said boiling chamber, said well being open for the removal of gum and sludge when said liquid container is removed.
5. In a vaporizer, a trap for the insertion into the channel slanting upwardly from the liquid container well to the bottom of the boiling chamber, said trap having a tunnel forming bottom to cooperate with the bottom of said channel for the return of gum and sludge from the boiling chamber to the well, said trap having two spaced vertical side walls extending upwardly from said tunnel forming bottom to form an upper passageway for the flow of liquid from the container well to the boiling chamber, said walls being spaced by two transverse, substantially vertical walls forming a deterent to the flow of hot liquid from the boiling chamber to the well.
6. Apparatus as set forth in claim 5, in which the tunnel forming bottom has a short transverse tongue extending upwardly from its upper end.
7. In a vaporizer, a boiling chamber having an electric heater at the bottom and having an upward tubular flue with an inward rib, a plurality of spaced, horizontal, ring like baflles resting on said rib, and a removable spout supported by the upper end of said flue, said baffies guarding against the insertion of a finger against said heater when said flue is removed.
