DRILLING- -MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 280,956, dated July 10, 1883,
Application filed January ll, 1583. (No model.)
\ To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OHN RIEPPEL, of Renovo, county of Clinton, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improve ments in Drilling-Machinesand I do hereby declare that the following its full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the let ters of reference marked thereon.
This invention is specially designed for drilling boilers or other cylindrical objects from the interior of the same; and it consists, broadly,
in the combination of a proper frame-work having a journal at each end, and carrying an actuating-shaft and proper drilling mechanism, with any proper bearing-support at one end, and a central base-piece having radiating supportingarms with a capacity for radial adjustment at the other, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a per spective view of my invention and Fig. 2, a detached view, showing the gearing, f g, for actuating the drill-shaft.
v To enable others skilled in the art to make my improved machine, I will proceed to describe fully its construction and manner of operation.
A represents a three branched base piece, having a hole or bearing for a journal-stud, I), held in the casting B, hereinafter referred to,-
and three or more radiating arms, a a a, with threaded ends, as shown.
a a afrepresent nuts upon the threaded ends of the arms aa a, each of which is provided with the conical projection a as shown.
13 represents a casting, having a cap, '6, secured thereto by bolts, which is provided with a central hole adapted to hold the journal-stud b, as shown. A similar base piece, A, with arms, and casting B are located at the opposite end of the machine, for furnishing the proper support when the conditions of the case allowed their use. If, however, from the shortness of the boiler or from other cause, the outer supportingbase-piece and arms cannotbe used, the casting B is secured to any proper cross bar, as shown in Fig. 1.
' G 0 represent rods, secured at their ends to the castings B B, these constituting a frame, the rods of which are adapted to support the cross -head E and the drilling mechanism, as shown.
E represents a cross-head, which, by means of side openings, is adapted to slide in a longitudinal direction upon the frame-rods into any desired position within the limits of the machine.
F represents the standard of the drill, supported by the cross-head; and f the drill-shaft,
having the bevelgear wheel f Fig. 2, the
terior of the boiler or other cylindrical object to be drilled, the arms of the base-pieceA are adjusted in such manner as to cause the center of the actuating-shafuto coincide exactly with the center of the boiler. The crosshead then may be adjusted upon the frame-rods to bring the drilling mechanism into the proper position longitudinally, and the drill itself, through the medium of the revoluble frame, may be swung into any desired'position radially; The machine then being set in motion, the drill may be employed in the usual well-known manner.
"Some of the advantages of the described construction are as follows: By means of this ma chine the drilling necessary to be performed inside of the boiler is done by power instead of by hand. By means of the arms having a capacity for radial extension, it is possible to center the axis of the revoluble frame with such accuracy as to always obtain perfect uniformity in the direction of the holes in the same horizontal plane. The portions of the drill-shaft upon each side of the center line vary in length, and as each end has a tool-socket it follows that the effect is the same as if the machine were provided either with a long or a short drill. It is thus adapted for convenient use under varying conditions. 7
I do not limit myself to the precise construction of frame-work shown, neither to the precise form of drill.
Having thus fully described my invention,
3. The improved machine, described, consisting of the base-piece A, having extensible radial arms and a oentra1 jonrnal-bearing the frame-work BO, with-j oifrnals, the cross' head E, the drilling mechanism F f f and the actuat- 20 ing-shaft, combined and, arranged as and for the purpose described.
This specification signed and witnessed this 4th day of January, 1883.
JOHN. RIEPPEL.
